About the Author

Joel Karsten developed the straw bale gardening method more than ten years ago. As interest grew, he became one of the most in-demand garden lecturers in the country. He has a degree in horticulture form the University of Minnesota and currently resides in Roseville, Minnesota.

Results Beyond My Highest Expectations!

The reviews here seem to be mostly "plan to, want to, expect to".

I'll make this short and sweet...I put in two bales this year as a trial and the results were not good...there were incredibly good!!!

I put in four tomatoes, three peppers, a zucchini, and a lemon cucumber on two bales, consciously trying to stress the concept to see what it would deliver.

I will never garden any other way! The plants all grew rapidly and have been exuberantly productive. In addition, for the first time in 25 years living in this location (San Francisco Peninsula), I have not had to fight the slugs and snails! One tried to climb the bale but gave up. What a relief to be freed of that struggle.

We're waiting for the huge crop of tomatoes to ripen while we harvest zucchini, cucumbers, and peppers.

I wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Karsten's book!

30 years of gardening and now making changes

This book has revolutionized how I garden. I have a 40x14 foot greenhouse and extensive outdoor gardens. However, I live high in the Rocky Mountains and my soil is nothing more than crushed shale. It costs me an arm and a leg to haul in compost every year and since my property is all pasture I don't have the luxury of leaves for massive amounts of compost. I started using straw bales for part of my garden last summer and I was stunned. It was the best garden I've ever had here. And at the end of the season we moved the wet, partially composted bales to the flower gardens and let them compost over the winter. Because the inside of the bales is warm from all the compost I was able to start plants a full 30 days before the normal season, with the help of a frost blanket on cold nights. I've brought in all straw bales for this summer and have already planted my spring crop in the greenhouse. This summer I'm adding Azomite dust and fungus to the bales, along with red earth worms. I think I'll end up planting half of my gardens in straw bales each year. Then use the leftover, partially composted bales to enrich my poor soil so I'll be gardening half in amended soil and half in bales each year. It's less expensive than hauling in compost and MANY FEWER weeds!

Best Tomatoes we ever have grown

4 Months after getting the book I can say this method works great. We tried the straw bale and cannot belive the results so far in 2013.. we are in Minnesota and with tilled clay soil always had a uninspiring crop. A lot of fruit on the vine and hope they all ripen and taste great..TBD..The basel has the best we ever tatsed and so aromatic..Do recommend this process and are planning to expand for 2014
Oct 2 2013 UPDATE: This was the best veggie garden we have had. The only problem is that we had tried to many different plants in two straw bales.Crops that grew very tall ( Basel and tomatoes)overshadowed the smaller height plants like carrots and onions. We will extend the bales next year and have a section for smaller plants by themselves. Otherwise the plants liked the conditions. It is important to keep the watering up at ;east evry couple days.. For a first year experiment thumbs up..

Great Representation of a Brilliant and Quixotic Pioneer

I read this work in the late 1980s, and am still impressed with it to this day. It is one of the few completely fair and complete business biographies ever written.
Young does a landmark job digging into Jobs' formative years growing up as an adopted son of a machinist in pre-Silicon Valley, describes his years at Reed and India in more depth than any other author, perfectly covers his mercurial personality in both personal and professional relationships, and accurately chronicles his rise and fall in the labyrinth of corporate America.
This is the best of the Jobs and Apple books, and is far superior to The Return of Steve Jobs. Highly recommended to those interested in both the personal and professional life of one of America's great risk takers.

do you want a chance to change the world?

this is an absorbing, riveting true account of how an incredible visionary inspired and cajoled both talented and ordinary people to achieve things they could never dream of. I read this shortly after Jobs was ousted from Apple in the 80s and to witness how he came back to save Apple from oblivion a decade later is one of the great comeback stories of our time.

the title the journey is the reward is very zen and very much Steve Jobs in his early days ... the acid-dropping, bare-footed vegetarian who was at once arrogant and selfish yet brilliantly daring and inventive.

another interesting read is John Sculley's book Odyssey. Sculley, of course was Jobs' hand-picked CEO for Apple and the man who later ousted Jobs from Apple ... you'll see that inspite of Sculley's betrayal, he maintains in his writing a sense of awe ... that he was a convert in the Jobs' mystique ... he never was the same after Jobs' challenge "do you want to sell sugared water for the rest of your life? or do you want a chance to change the world?"

A fascinating look at Apple's golden years

I've read this book a few times over the years and love it. Since my first Apple IIe computer in 1984 I've been fascinated with the tale (fable, really) of Apple Computer, a company that was just unlike any other. This book, along with Rose's "West of Eden" and Levy's "Hackers" are among my favorite chronicles of the Apple lore. (Gen-Xers think that "two guys in a garage" is just a cute metaphor; they should be forced to read these books.) Young's depiction of Jobs as an acid-dropping, un-deoderized, mantra-mumbling crybaby may or may not be completely accurate... but it would explain a lot, wouldn't it

a must have reference book!

I decided to come back and write a review of this book 6 years later because the book was sitting next to me as I type and I figured why not? I have owned a number of these editions of this book. I usually wear them out! They are like the go to "bible" for natural healing. When doctors cannot help you and you have no where else to turn, or perhaps you just want to heal yourself naturally, this book is amazing. Laid out in such an easy to follow format with eating patterns that would be best for certain ailments, what herbs to take, what natural methods to use. I highlight mine and turn to it all the time for simple ailments to arthritis to whatever. I have nothing negative to say about this book. In the digital age, this is one very nice actual book to have in your hands for reference!

Pretty much the same book as the old one, nothing new, so not worth the money.

I had a book of Phyllis way back when probably 10 years ago. I was really hoping this would be new and updated, and new insights. It basically what was in the other book. In all these years there have been no new therapies, herbs, treatments for things we had 10 years ago. So basically I got a book I already had

Bias Alert - I'm one of those organic exercise nuts and I consult this guide for all of my health decisions. I feel the first 50ish pages should be required reading for all junior high school students and that all families should have a copy. Fear not, you don't have to read the whole thing, most of it is reference, but that first 50 pages is a really solid guideline for well being. I give it often as a gift to those I feel will benefit, but sadly not everyone cares or has good enough information to pick their health information source. If there is any ONE health book, I believe this covers more in a science based, rational way that anyone can make use of, than any other I have seen. Ok, there I said it. Told you I was biased.

Are these reviews padded by the author? This is a pamphlet, not a real book. It has barely more information that the Forex Wiki article. There is nothing for intermediate or advanced readers. It's barely even a beginners guide! No real strategy. A couple primitive diagrams. No candlesticks. Nothing on actual trading, like when to enter/exit or how to predict movement probability. It's not even a decent glossary of terminology. Save your money. Google "forex" , spend 5 minutes reading the first or second page that comes up in the search results and you'll acquire more knowledge about forex that you will by reading the 36 cent a page brochure.

Great guide to Forex trading

I have an interest in forex trading but never really knew where to start with it, this book teaches you all the information you need to know. It goes into information about how to expand in forex trading and teaches you all the strategies and tips that will make you successful in making money this way. It has clear information and is backed up with graphs and illustrations to help you understand the process. I would highly recommend this book if you are interested in learning more about this and as a beginner I found it extremely useful.

A great resource, with helpful sample forms and good advice.

A huge timesaver for anyone involved in church administration, either as an ordained leader, member of a church's board/vestry, or church secretary/administrator. This book is accessable and clear, full of practical advice and very useful forms and policy "boilerplate." These forms save a lot of time and trouble, because you don't have to re-invent the wheel whenever you need a hiring policy or a church facility use agreement form. In addition, this work has a visible spiritual and scriptural core.
While this book was largely written by Methodists, as an Episcopalian I've found it very easy to adapt to my own church polity. It is used by my vestry and my seminary! I would definitely recommend that your church own a copy.

It provides information and supporting templates for the activities of leading a local spiritual center. From developing a mission statement, goal-setting, individual ministries within the center, and event planning to counting and reporting finances and conducting personnel reviews, this manual is a must have covering just about everything you need to know to succeed in having a healthy and growing spiritual center. Practical Knowledge You Can Use

I have learned more from this book about Church Administration than I have at both my undergrad and grad level study schools.If you're looking dor a how to approach to "further the administation of God, which is by faith love and a pure conscience" then buy this book on administration today. I was able to centralize the church treasury, introduce accountin software; created an interal audit committee and learned how to protect myself and the church through counseling. Loaded with IRS forms and examples of how to recieve gifts and offerings above a certain limit, it also came with practical approaches to evangelism and leadership development. My favorite quote: the people are the greatest resourse.

About the Author
Karen O’Connor is the Jonathan N. Helfat Distinguished Professor of Political Science and the Founder and Director Emerita of the Women & Politics Institute at American University. Before coming to American University, Karen taught political science for seventeen years at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was the first woman to receive the university’s highest teaching award. She has been recognized by several associations as the most outstanding woman in political science and public administration as well as by the Southern Political Science Association (SPSA) for her contributions to the discipline. She has served on the American Political Science Association (APSA) and SPSA councils and as chair of the Law and Courts and Women and Politics Research sections of the APSA.

Larry J. Sabato is the founder and director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics. A Rhodes Scholar, Sabato has taught more than tens of thousands of students in his career at Oxford University, Cambridge University, and the University of Virginia. At the University of Virginia, Sabato has received every major teaching award, including the university’s highest honor, the Thomas Jefferson Award. In 2013 Prof. Sabato won an Emmy award for the documentary Out of Order, which he produced to highlight the dysfunctional U.S. Senate, and in 2014, Professor Sabato received a second Emmy award for the PBS documentary based on his New York Times bestseller The Kennedy Half-Century. Alixandra B. Yanus is Assistant Professor of Political Science at High Point University, where she teaches courses in American government and gender and politics. She is also co-director of the Women and Gender Equality (W.A.G.E.) Leadership Project. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from American University and a M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
