Best field manual

This book seems to have everything, with sections on materials, tools, methods, locations... the works.
Like any book that has "Everything", assuming it doesn't resemble an unabridged encyclopedia,
It won't have every little thing.
But it will serve as a good field manual... and considering its cost and rarity, should you really bring it into the field... spring for a zippered book cover with some level of protection...
or leave it on the table...at home...by your favorite chair. Where you will likely make notes of what you need in the field.
Don't forget to join one of those Rock & Mineral Clubs mentioned to really get a head start.
(Besides, such clubs usually have contacts at quarries and other sites, not to mention umbrella insurance for the mine owners... which will probably get you in more places than you could on your own.)
So, if you must start somewhere, start with this book. You won't be disappointed.

A Fantastic Rockhounder's how to

This book was recommended by a friend who is a much more experienced rockhound than myself. I really have got to thank him. Mister Sinkankas' book is a veritable how to of rockhounding collecting covering everything from prospecting, collecting, specimen prep and selling specimens. All of this and in easy to understand, well explained and illustrated layman's terms. I wish I had found this book years ago. I highly recommend it. My only critsism is that it was published more than twenty years ago and could stand some updates such as web addresses for government and educational resources, buying and selling online etc... But really that is not something to stop one benifiting from the knowledge contained in this book. If you are thinking of prospecting for minerals as a collector, you need this book.

Great book for mineral hunters.

This book is a great. It had everything in it we were looking for. This was a library book, and someone had marked all pertinent pages for just what we needed. Good fun for rock collectors. The book was used, but in fine condition and will be a good resource.
