Elvis as History

Extremely interesting and informative. I can't recall how I decided to make a study of Presley, but indeed I did. I read this book, followed by CARELESS LOVE and then proceeded to a few other books about Elvis. I also recall reading a scathing biography by a man named GOLDBURG I believe, that came out soon after Elvis died. GURALNICK is by far the best written, most objective, and the most informative and interesting read. It isn't dry at all. I found the information about Tom Parker and the way in which he handled the "Elvis industry" very enlightening and unique, but not necessarily as exploitive as others have suggested. Parker kept Elvis's career alive far longer and more lucratively than any of the early rock and rollers. Perhaps they understood how fundamentally flawed and interdependent they both were and neither one seemed to do anything to intervene in each other's self destructive conduct.
After reading this followed by Careless Love, I came to the conclusion that no one could have saved Elvis from himself. This is much more than a "price of fame" story though I had to wonder what kind of life Elvis would have led if his gift had never been discovered. Michael Jackson said he never had a childhood. Elvis never had an adulthood. But despite everything that did and did not happen in his life, he seemed like such a simple, decent guy. And no one yet has begun to analyze or attempt to explain the magic and singularity of his appeal. I was 12 or 13 when I saw Elvis on the Ed Sullivan Show. I remember that moment as vividly at the day that JF Kennedy was murdered. There was something about Elvis that no other performer has ever matched.

Compelling In Depth Biography of Elvis Presley -- Unmatched

Peter Guralnick is one of those rare biographers who presents a life with a respect for the complexity that any life deserves, with an understanding of the responsibility of the enormous task. Not only did he spend years doing a phenomenal amount of research, and interviewing hundreds of people (some many times), he has a remarkable intuitive sense of which accounts are best juxtaposed against others in order to give us some feeling of the contradictions and complexities of Elvis Presley, both in his behavior as experienced by others, and his own view of himself, sometimes profoundly self-aware, other times tragically mired in denial. Guralnick manages to do this -- give us a kind of sideways view of this fantastically magnetic figure -- without ever cramming any psychological theories down our throats. Not that he does not express his own opinions, but when it comes to the grand questions, he lets us draw our own conclusions. But don't let that fool you: Last Train to Memphis is a page turner start to finish.
As a reader, I sense that as Guralnick came to "know" Elvis, he had much of the same conflicted feelings that those who knew him in life had. But, as someone able to maintain the distance necessary to responsibly write in depth about the life of another, Guralnick put all of that contradictory and sometimes outright mysterious behavior of his subject into a portrait that gives us a feeling for "the boy" (as he is and is called in this first volume).
Guralnick is an American music historian, and approaches describing that part of the story very well as far as finding a middle ground between lay people and readers who already have serious knowledge. As someone with very little knowledge, I was able to learn how incredibly unusual Elvis was both as far as the music he was compelled to seek out from his earliest years and how he would take those deep influences and make them his own in ways that profoundly changed the course of music in the mid 20th century.
This volume ends with the death of Elvis's mother, a trauma he would never really recover from, and his entry into the army, which would also alter his life in permanent and ultimately tragic ways. But Guralnick also subtly shows us that Elvis Presley's difficulties actually began far earlier than that. There is no other Elvis biography that comes close to what Peter Guralnick has done here.

I've always been fascinated by Elvis. How he went from cutting lawns and truck driving to a teenage idol (all thanks to Colonel Tom Parker). He epitomized something very new in the 1950s - that a star is not born, a star is made through the media/publicity complex. And he blindly let Tom Parker steer him (fueled only by Parker's greed) through so many bad career decisions, from all the B movies to the tacky Las Vegas shows. And like so many others (Michael Jackson, for example) Elvis died in a hailstorm of drugs prescribed by his own personal physician. Guralnick's book is the most thoroughly researched and even handed treatment of Elvis' life you will find. (And he he warns you in the preface to the companion sequel to this book that you will be reading a tragedy.)
