About the Author
George Ehrenhaft has been writing for Barron's for over three decades. During that time he has been the author or co-author of books on the SAT, the ACT, and both the AP English Literature and AP English Language exams. Other titles relate to English grammar and essay writing, especially writing college application essays. He has also written several Barron's Book Notes titles about literature, including The Grapes of Wrath. and A Streetcar Named Desire.

Ehrenhaft spent most of his career teaching English in Westchester County, New York, at Fox Lane and Mamaroneck High Schools. He is now a resident of Moraga, California, where he has become a prolific watercolor painter.

Get a 5 on your AP test!

This book helped my daughter get a 5 on her AP exam! Without it, she wouldn't have the extra practice and strategies she could only get from a source made specifically to help on the AP Test, as apposed to relying strictly on her textbook or her teacher who has 50+ students to prepare.

Useful but disappointing

With all the 5 star reviews here I really had my hopes up for this book. I really, really wanted to like it and, to some degree, I did.

This is a very short book. I'm not complaining, I remember the day when excellent technical books were only 200 pages. However, these small outstanding references were kind of like Unix tools - they covered one subject and covered it well. Mr. Tong, on the other hand attempts to teach us Tomcat, Eclipse, Axis, and PKI in a 165 page book.

While I personally didn't need the tutorials on Tomcat, Eclipse, or PKI I thought they were very well done. Unfortunately I didn't feel this way about the Axis portion of the book. When reading the information about Axis it mostly seemed to me to be:

1. Do this.

2. Now do this.

3. Press enter.

4. See, it worked.

OK, so it worked. I still have very little understanding of why it worked or what other options Axis has to offer.

I also felt the book gave the impression that Tomcat-Eclipse-Axis were joined at the hip. I would have prefered to learn the workings of Axis so that I would be comfortable using it on WebLogic or WebSphere. Maybe using Netbeans as my IDE or maybe just using a command line. In my opinion, Mr. Tong does not deliver this kind of Axis understanding.

Lastly, I'd like to comment on the grammer used in the book. It is clear that Mr. Tong is not a native Engling speaker. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Tong certainly speaks English better than I speak a second language. However, I believe editing by a native English speaker would improve the readability of the book. I didn't really have any big problems understanding the text but the grammer does make it hard to read. In many cases I had to read a sentence several times to get the point.

Useful CXF resource

I'm a professional Software Engineer/Architect with many years of J2EE experience but new to the open source Apache CXF. This book has helped me learn the basic CXF through examples. I was also able to get some very good clarifications/explanations from the book author himself. Please note however that this review only rates the CXF SOAP-based sections as I only skimmed over a few Axis2 and REST paragraphs and could not therefore speak for them. If time allows, I will go over those Axis2 sections in a near future and update this review as suited.

Great Resource for Learning Apache Axis

Kent Tong is a gifted writer and educator who knows Apache Axis very well. I found his explanation of a complex topic such as WS-security simply the best that I have seen. The book is rather short at aound 173 pages but very informative. His diagrams and annotated explanations are very useful in conveying a lot of information in a condensed manner which would have required pages and pages of explanation. Kent has used all the open source tools, e.g., Apache Axis, Eclipse, Eclipse WTP, WSS4J, OpenSSL etc., so you don't need to invest anything. If you have access to a computer and internet, you are good to go. While working through the book examples, I found a few typos, mistakes which I conveyed to Kent. He quicky incorporated his updates in the book and gave me access to an updated PDF. I whole heartedly and unhesitatingly recommend this book if you want to learn Apache Axis and particularly, WS-security.

This book is essentially the author's previous book on water treatment with two new chapters on biological treatment. Some of the material from the former book has also been edited out. Unfortunately, the repackaging of the former book was not done carefully, and the new text is full of typos and errors. I would recommend the author's first book as a comprehensive text on water treatment, but do not highly recommend this book.

Due to woeful financial performances and failure to show a profit, the Westchester trains stopped running within 25 years of their christening.

Good history, great business analysis

Good read about construction of a commuter rail line through southern Westchester County, NY. Its excellent historical references and good writing should make this interesting for non-railfans. Harwood's strength is his insightful business analysis of why and how this very expensive line got built and then abandoned. Reads like a good mystery novel in parts, with Harwood zooming back from fascinating minutiae about routing choices to J.P. Morgan's strategic -- but not entirely clear -- plans for his railroad investments. Fun to read.

Coming up on 100th Aniversary of its opening, and having explored some of the abandoned ROW / stations back in the 1970's, I wanted to learn about this railroad. Excellent written book going over the dubious payments and "strange" decisions made that doomed this endeavor before it started. Would have liked to see more of the construction photos and any taken during the scrapping, but there are other books dedicated to that.
