PLOT: A nonfiction account of the Roman spectacles reconstructed in minute detail by the author based on ancient texts and modern practices that parallel what happened in the arenas of ancient Rome.

REVIEW: A must-read for those interested in ancient Rome, although some of the details can be a bit unpleasant. But it reflected an unpleasant time and place, it seems, not the whitewashed version we see in some Hollywood epics.

I recently finished Daniel P. Mannix other book, The Hell Fire Club. Could not put it down! Downed it three days. Was curious about "Those About To Die"--what a topic!
From the ad in the back of the 1958 paper-back copy of "The Hell Fire Club" reads:
The Full truth of the sadistic Roman "games", where two armies of 5,000 men fought to the death, girls were thrown to crocodiles, leopards and bulls were taught to ravage woman. The wildest public massacres in history.-- The author shows how the "public entertainment" escalated over a period of a few hundred years, the grand economy which was built up around these events. This is definitely a piece of history we want to be aware of as so not to repeat. This was also a quick, smooth, easy (but intense) read. Good writer.

This is a timeless story,starting from ancient rome leading us to contemporary american society.The romans had their coliseum and circus maximus,while we have our television radio,movies and tabloid newspapers to articulate in sight and sound examples of depraved entertainment for the gullible masses. This is a great book to encourage you to look around you at what passes for innocent entertainment,but really functions as a scintillating distraction to take our minds off the decline of the american economic and social structure.

Charles H. Spurgeon, a theological titan, was the astounding preacher of a “megachurch” in 19th-century England. He had innumerable encounters with adverse spiritual forces, and had many victories during his life. This Is How You Work a Room

This is the most wonderful book, really something I've needed for years. Being an only child, I tried always to hide in the background, lost my breath in a crowd, and most certainly had no idea how to work a room. I didn't know that skill existed. All I knew was that some people could do it, but not me. Jeanne Martinet explains it all, with very helpful tips and turns of phrase, behaviors that draw people in, and it's a game really, something you can master. Actually it's quite fun, and I've practiced literally whole chapters out of the book to get it right. After all though, there's no right to it, just the knowledge that everyone else is as nervous as you are, and that people really do want to make friends. She also has great suggestions on texting versus email, versus a real, handwritten note––which one is most appropriate under which circumstances. Hers is a sophisticated take on how communication works in our talk driven world. I should add that Martinet is a really funny woman, so those childhood fears of mine began to seem just plain silly, worst than that, irrelevant. The very best thing about the book is that at its heart is a true belief in person-to-person fun and laughter and mutual respect.

Old friend is still funny and now an even better friend

Took a look in a bookstore just to see what had changed from original edition -- I bought the copy years ago and found Martinet funny and incredibly helpful. Bought the new edition (and have now bought two gift copies). Still a fun read, and I have already used two of the new techniques (anyway, I think they're new) to get myself out of one uncomfortable situation and work my way into another (very comfortable) other situation.

Jeanne Martinet takes the fear out of the process of talking to strangers!

This book helped me a lot. I didn't like all of the techniques, but most of them were very useful and some truly helpful. The Art of Mingling taught me to get over my anxiety/fear about talking to people in social situations. Simple concepts like "the Buddy System" work (at least for me!). I can now enter room full of strangers and not want to rush out of there as quickly as possible. I can now actually have fun in such situations. Quite a contrast to my life before reading this book!

John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton, 1st Baron Acton, KCVO, DL (10 January 1834 – 19 June 1902)—known as Sir John Dalberg-Acton, 8th Bt from 1837 to 1869 and usually referred to simply as Lord Acton—was an English Catholic historian, politician, and writer. He was the only son of Sir Ferdinand Dalberg-Acton, 7th Baronet and a grandson of the Neapolitan admiral Sir John Acton, 6th Baronet. He is perhaps best known for the remark, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men. Lord Acton (1834-1902) was one of the great historians of the Victorian period and one of the greatest classical liberal historians of all time. His theme was “the history of liberty” and even though he was never able to complete his magnum opus of that name he did write numerous essays, book reviews, and lectures. He also was the inspiration behind the multi-volume Cambridge Modern History.

Absolute excellence

Lord John Acton (1834-1902) is now chiefly remembered for his axiom, "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." However, Acton was a historian of international repute, whose championship of freedom of conscience caused his near excommunication over the adoption of the principle of Papal Infallibility in 1870.

Lord Acton did not publish a book during his lifetime, but in 1895 he was made Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University, where he made a number of astounding lectures. In 1906, a number of his lectures were compiled into book form; the result is this book, Lectures of Modern History. Beginning with his inaugural lecture in 1895, On the Study of History, the book then launches into a history of Europe and European thought from 1500 to 1787 and the American Constitutional Convention.

This book has been described as the History of Liberty, but it is more than that. Delivered with power and passion, it is almost a religious tract of liberty. I found the dialogue to be gripping (a word I don't often apply to non-fiction) and informative. I did not expect much from such an old work, but quite pleasantly surprised. With this work I now see that Lord Acton's reputation was very well deserved. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.
