Objective & structured study of culture

The greatest value that comes out of this book is the ability to articulate exactly what we mean by culture, what are its various dimensions, & how a culture is manifest at the macro or national level- while stressing every now & then to separate a national culture from the individual value system of its citizens.

The first seven chapters elucidate on the meaning of culture, its dimensions, & the comparative scores of various different countries in each of these dimensions - what these scores mean in terms of the family, school, workplace, the state, & ideas. This consistent structure gives the reader a very nuanced point of view on different cultures & the way they manifest. In the latter chapters, Hofstede also considers scores on two cultural dimensions & explains the combined effect of these as a whole.

Chapter 8 does a great job of differentiating Organizational cultures from National ones & clearly articulates that values do not differ across organizations in the same country; what differs are the practices these values translate into. The book did not have as extensive research on Organizational cultures, but manages to establish what is, or should be, understood by Organizational cultures. And it also has interesting notes on how some of these Organizational culture dimensions corelate with national culture dimensions.

The final two chapters are notes on implications of these differences & the elements of culture shock & how to go about handling these at the level of family, school, etc.

So while this was one of the great books I read this year, I still think that the title of book is misleading - for organizational cultures is not the mainstay of the book; national culture is.

But Hofstede's very organized & structured prose adds a great deal to a very intangible soft topic like culture. I think I understand the world a little more having read this book & can try to differentiate the broad national culture traits in the people I work with from their own individual value systems.

Monumental Book Well Worth the Read

The father and son team of Geert and Geert Jan Hofstede have done a remarkable job breaking down the (measurable) elements of the world's cultures, usingt the somewhat antiquated IBM studies combined with more recent (less comprehensive) studies. The end result is that nations can be evaulauted on the basis of criteria such as "uncertainty avoidance," "individualism" and "power distance from superiors."

The work is enlightening and helpful to anyone who works internationally. It is also useful to break down one's own nation (for example, some Americans lean toward the British way of thinking while others are more German-like). The same criteria that divide nations also divide families within a society.

Businessmen, missionaries, pastors, counselors, journalists, and social scientists should devour these materials!

This should be required reading for anyone planning to live overseas or anyone who deals with internationals. In short, this book is relevant to our modern "shrinking" world and quite well done.

Like most significant works, this volume has its weak points.

Although the authors claim to espouse a "values neutral" position (which I have always argued is an impossible and illogical position), their Dutch/Swedish preferences ring out loudly and clearly (humanistic, environmnetalist, etc.). Although the authors do make a serious attempt to look at things from other perspectives, they simply cannot divorce themselves from their own cultural preferances. This is not bad -- they simply need to be above board and stop pretending to take the role of the neutral outsider (at least to better influence those of us who are American conservatives; we are big into distinguishing between fact and evaluation of fact; these evaluations are always done through a person's own personal gridwork).

The authors also have occasional trouble connecting a few dots. For example, on the bottom of p. 355, the Hofstedes are tactfully scolding the U.S. for its lack of foreign aid (again, showing their own bias), but on the top of p. 356 they add, "Looking back to half a century of development assistance, most observers agree that the effectiveness of much of the spending has been dismal." They then say those countries which did improve did so because of their cultural values, not foreign aid. But they seem incapable of concluding that good intentions (and even money) is not the most effective way to solve these problems. They just don't get it.

The same is true with contributions through governments to Tsunami relief. It should be expected that individualistic countries would be more prone to give as individuals, not as collective societies. Rather than look at total giving (or perecentage) OF A SOCIETY, they authors confuse a society with its government. Lots of missed "dot connections" in this work.

Despite the books weakspots, it is overwhelming strong and rich with fascinating content. It is a "mind opening" work -- well worth the read. You simply must read this one!

Great work, yet also limited

Hofstede's Culture and Organizations is a classic in cultural literature and is definitively worth reading. It contains numerous insights which are interesting yet also practical. A must read for anyone interested in national cultural differences.

The book consist of about 400 pages and is fairly dense in text. It consists of three different parts. The first part describes Hofstede's famous dimensions of national culture, the second discusses cultures in organizations and lasts the implications of all the earlier chapters.

In this book, Hofstede makes a lot of generalizations. I found it sometimes difficult to accept these and put my mind to "in general, statistically x is true" instead of "all people from population x are so and so." Especially when reading a book like this, it is important to keep in mind that generalizations are... exactly that. They are statistically true, but not per definition true.

Part 1 summarizes Hofstede's long research in cultural differences. His work started many years ago when he did cultural surveys in IBM and started to look at different cultural dimensions. He discovered four dimensions which he called: 1) power distance, 2) individualism/collectivism, 3) masculinity/femininity, 4) uncertainty avoidance. After a couple of years, working with a professor from the Hong Kong university, he discovered a fifth category which he called: long-term/short-term orientation. Each of these dimensions has its own chapter in which he shows the results of all countries on this particular dimension. After which he discusses how this influences the individual, family, organizations and state.

Part 1 was very insightful, yet at times the author seemed to be a victim of confusing causes and effects. At points he drew conclusions which were arguable. For example, he equated having a detached house with individualism, yet earlier he showed that individualism correlated with wealth. He leaves open whether wealth correlates to detached houses or individualism. Several times, the author jumped to conclusions where I felt he shouldn't yet. (perhaps part of his Dutch culture :P)

Part two discusses culture an organizations. The first chapter (chapter 7) argues that management theories are always limited to the culture of the creator. He makes a convincing case about this, yet I felt he went a little too far. When reading this, he seemed to argue that the management theories from one culture *never* apply to other cultures, where I'd expect a little more caution in the conclusions (similar comment as above). He especially seems to enjoy criticizing American management theories :) The second chapter in this part talks about organizational cultures. It looks at difference practice dimensions that can be identified in different organizational cultures.

Part three consist of two concluding chapters of which the first discusses intercultural encounters and culture shocks. I enjoyed how the clarifications of how different cultures encounter other cultured (ethnocentrism/xenophilia). The final chapter consist of suggestions to the world from the author. Suggestions on how to take culture into account at work, family, in the press, etc.

Cultures and Organizations is a very insightful work on cultural differences, yet I also found it limiting? Howcome? I noticed that the author especially focuses on differences in cultures in Europe and between Europe/US, yet rarely had good insight in Asian, Latin American, or African cultures. He does mention them every now and then, but still, almost all detailed examples and explanation are from Europe. Of course, this reflects the authors own experiences, but because of that (and because I've been living in Asia for many years) I felt his comments on Asian cultures was every now and then not subtle enough, which annoyed me.

Another point on which I disagreed with the author was the speed of cultural change. Hofstede is of opinion that culture does *not* change or that it takes a very very long time before it changes (relative to each other). I've lived in China for a couple years and frequently discussed cultural changes there, I think everyone will say that cultural *values* (not just practices) have changed a lot over the last 20 years. For example, on Hofstede's individualism/collectivism dimension, China was the top on collectivism. Based on my experiences, I wouldn't believe that anymore. Yes, this was true perhaps when he did the IBM survey, but not now. Similarly, Singapore scored lowest on uncertainty avoidance, which according to his explanation, shouldn't be as Singapore is the country with perhaps the most strict laws of all countries. My experience is that cultural values are changing, whereas Hofstede feels they are not (and they are perhaps even diverging more). Of course, only the future will tell us which is true, from a cultural perspective, Hofstede only surveyed a very small time-frame :)

All the comments aside, this book is definitively worth reading. I'd rate it 4.5 stars (due to some of the quick conclusions made) and decided to go for 4 Amazon stars. Definitively worth it though.

About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Professor Yi Wang is the Faculty Distinguished Professor of Radiology, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, and co-Director of the MRI facility at Cornell University. Professor Wang is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. Professor Wang has been serving as a scientific reviewer of grant applications for many agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), European Research Council, Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, Swiss National Science Foundation, and the Wellcome Trust of the United Kingdom. As a Principal Investigator, Professor Wang has been awarded many NIH grants for MRI-related research and education and has published more than 120 peer-reviewed journal papers. Professor Wang’s research interest has been in developing MRI technology for clinical applications using methodologies and tools from physics, mathematics, electronic engineering, computer science, and biology. Professor Wang has developed the real time navigator method to measure motion and modify data acquisition accordingly to compensate for motion artifacts in cardiac imaging, which has become widely adopted in research and clinical practice for cardiac and abdominal imaging. Professor Wang has pioneered the time resolved acquisition method for imaging contrast agent bolus in the routinely used contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography. Professor Wang has invented the multiple station stepping table technology using local coils for high throughput of imaging various body parts while the patient is transported through the magnet, which has become adapted in modern MRI systems and is required for the bolus chase peripheral magnetic resonance angiography. Recently, Professor Wang’s group has introduced the quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) technology by inverting the local magnetic field estimated from MRI signal. QSM is promising for investigating tissue magnetic biomarkers, including deoxyhemoglobin, ferritin, hemosiderin, calcification and contrast agents, and has potential applications for various diseases involving iron metabolism, oxygen metabolism and blood degradation. Professor Wang is currently working on research projects related to QSM, Bayesian approaches to MRI and applications in the brain, heart, and liver.

About the Author

David Cheetham has been teaching and researching the theology and philosophy of religions for over 15 years. He has published books and numerous articles in this field. He is the author or editor of Ways of Meeting and the Theology of Religions, Contemporary Practice and Method in the Philosophy of Religion, and John Hick. He is Secretary to the European Society for Intercultural Theology and Interreligious Studies.

Douglas Pratt has been teaching and researching in theology, religion, and interreligious relations for over 25 years. He has published seven books and numerous chapters and articles in these fields. Professor of Religious Studies at a New Zealand University, he holds adjunct professorial appointments in Australia and Switzerland. He is the New Zealand Associate of the UNESCO Chair in Intercultural and Interreligious Relations - Asia Pacific, and an Associate of the Centre for the Study of Religion and Politics, University of St Andrews, Scotland.

David Thomas has been a student and teacher of Islamic religious thought and Christian-Muslim relations for more than 30 years. He is currently Professor of Christianity and Islam and Nadir Dinshaw Professor of Interreligious Relations at the University of Birmingham. Among his most recent works are Christian Doctrines in Islamic Theology and Christian--Muslim Relations, a bibliographical history, vols 1-5.

Always remember this: Ecumenism is unity in error. No matter how much is written about ecumenism in our modern age, no matter how much effort by scholars is put into studying the dynamics of inter-religious movements, the fact of the matter is that in this age of religio-political tones put forth by nearly all religious faiths, ecumenism is not an answer to our global conflict. The author has put much time into the compilation of facts and figures about the differences the various faith-groups have but it does not speak to the ageless question of whether we should do as God would have us do to "be ye separate", or to put our faith in the hands of man.

Paws down, one of the best of 2012

The Dalai Lama's Cat is written from the perspective of a (self-described) gorgeous Himalayan who was rescued by the Dalai Lama's staff and who spends copious amounts of time around His Holiness and those closest to him.

As you might imagine, "Bodhi catva" is privy to many spiritually intense conversations, and not only does she recount some the most important nuggets of Buddhism, she also applies the principles to her own life as she continues to strive to live up to her title of HHC (His Holiness's Cat). We also get a clue into the feline mind on issues such as playing the cello, "as we cats refer to that most delicate part of our grooming regimen when we attend to our nether regions."

Yes, there's a good dose of humor throughout the book as well.

I love me some anthropomorphism, and Michie pulls this off brilliantly. Both the premise and the writing are sharp, snappy, and clever; the story is warm and fulfilling. The lessons in Buddhist principles are an added, wonderful bonus because Michie, an established authority on Buddhism, not only shares them but also illustrates them in lighthearted, everyday situations to which anyone can relate.

I highlighted so many bits in my Kindle version, but one I want to leave you with is this, just in case the idea of reading a book about Buddhism, or any religion, puts you off: "The purpose of Buddhism is not to convert people. It is to give them tools so they can create greater happiness. So they can be happier Catholics, happier atheists, happier Buddhists."

Despite its deep topics, this book is an easy, enjoyable read; it reminds me a lot of Paolo Coelho's The Alchemist in that you can either fly through this for the story or stop at every page and think on what you've just read for hours, days, weeks, months, or years.

I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone who loves cats, is interested in learning more about mindfulness and other Buddhist principles, or who simply wants a great read. I couldn't love this book more, and I consider it an absolute must-read for 2012.

True Cause

The Dalai Lama's Cat is an outstanding read! I must say, initially I was not compelled to read this book. In fact, it travelled with me to Arizona and to Missouri with only a few pages read. What happened on the long plane ride home was simply not a coincidence. I fidgeted in my seat, Wi-Fi wasn't offered, my neighbor was drinking heavily, and I couldn't get situated--until I picked up the book and buried my head in the pages. After a few more pages, I was hooked!

You might NOT be a cat person, it's okay--don't let the name of this book deter you, and if you are a cat person--rejoice and turn the pages.

Wow, advise on happiness and living life in a novel that is filled with stories (within the story). Engaging daily situations that teach from the author's perception of the Dalai Lama's beliefs, or more specifically Buddhism. The book is also a pure example of learning through stories--so pleasant to have those `aha' moments shown in tale versus telling in a non-fiction instructional guide.

The tale (tail) begins with a kitten that is saved from the slums of New Delhi. A visual any reader can gain from the trailer of the movie Slumdog Millionaire. Am I shallow to say the hints throughout the book about famous people visiting the Dalai Lama kept me guessing and more than interested? Maybe a little, but I found it fascinating. Sharing the Dalai Lama's teachings within life's moments as seen through the eyes of the cat (who also learns from each happening!) and always on topics the reader can relate to. Although the work is fiction, I believe, the author, David Michie has an understanding of Buddhism, and does a fabulous job of spinning his tale with relevance toward today's times. Bravo! Well done.

In the early stages of the book a nun discusses her visit to a prison (this is when I became hooked) and how an inmate had a conversation with her and compared her own living situation with his. Ultimately, the inmate informed the nun, `if it all gets too hard' she could live with them. The nun was astonished that the inmate viewed the conditions in the nunnery harsher than his conditions in jail. And the Dalai Lama made a simple statement, "It's not the circumstances of our lives that make us happy or unhappy but the way we see them." Personally, something I've relearned throughout my life, and a topic that hits home with me when I remember my time in the `chemo' circle and the other folks with me.

My own immediate learning experience happened when the plane landed and I wasn't finished with the book! Had I not messed around for the entire first hour of that flight, and just picked up the book and read it--I would have been done, and satisfied. I can relate to HHC when she was taken to another location during the painting and refurbishing of the Dalai Lama's house, she behaved poorly. She hid under the blanket and did not step out of the room for a few days. On the day she finally stepped out--she met her `cat' friend, but was whisked away the following day, having no time to spend with her new friend. HHC identified that she robbed herself of the opportunity to spend time with her new friend--all over her ridiculous self-pity. Three days of sulking could have been spent with her new friend instead of wasted time hiding under the duvet.

Do you believe that every living being strives for happiness and wants to avoid all forms of suffering? And the True Cause of happiness is not from any physical external thing? Deep, isn't it? Well I like the way the Dalai Lama's cat handles these topics, and you will too.

I'm compelled to share with you what I learned about True Cause, but instead I will leave that as the title of this document and let you read the book, and discover for yourself the true cause of happiness (literally).

Lastly, I'm so enamored with this book because of my own personal experience. The content of these pages ring within my soul. And it's so simple!

When I was diagnosed with stage IV cancer and watched the pieces of my life fall away I gave in to the process. I had no choice. I had to deal with the cancer (and everything else in my life that fell apart), but I did have a choice about my attitude toward the battle--and ultimately isn't that the only thing you have control of--your own reaction? So I experienced some loss: my career, relationship, homes, finances, career, and for a while--my health. I made up my mind I would beat the cancer, but if for some reason I didn't make it--the time I had left would be wonderful. And that is how I won my battle.

Now, two years and seven months later--I have no sign of disease. I'm back in the thick of my life (a different life) and I thank you, David Michie, for reminding me of the importance of love and compassion and sharing with the world the simplicity of Buddhism and the fact that happiness is right here... as my Grandma would say, "Under your nose."

This book sneaks up on you, it should really make you think

I'm a sucker for books about cats or dogs, and the cover of this book is great, so I got it. I pretty much knew nothing about the Dalai Lama or about Buddhism before starting this book. The author writes the story from the vantage point of the cat, commonly known as HHC (His Holiness's Cat). It starts out with the cat/kitten finding her way into the life of the Dalai Lama and she is present while the Dalai Lama has meetings with all types of people. It is interesting because HHC finds herself in some type of quandary herself that parallels the issue the Dalai Lama discusses with his visitors, such as being unhappy or lonely. As the Lama 'enlightens' his visitor about their problem, HHC finds the solution and applies it to her own cat life. Of course, this stretches the imagination of how much a cat can think, but it is done very well and I really found myself enjoying the book and each lesson. Karma is talked about and explained which I found very interesting as I am always hearing that someone will get their karma after they do something wrong.

I think you have to have an open mind to get anything out of this book. I can honestly say I am very interested in learning more about the Dalai Lama and Buddhism after reading this book. Basically I was thinking it would be about meditating and forsaking good things in life, but it really is so much more. Admittedly I was woefully ignorant, but I hope to change that after reading this book. I heartily recommend reading this book, you might find a lot more in it than a cat story.

Listening in the Language Classroom

I think this book is useful in that it provides insights into the current teaching approaches in the L2 listening classroom. It compares the differences of language processing between L1 and L2 listeners --- how they decode, link to their schemata, use grammar, amplify what the speaker says and handle information etc. It is consequently useful to L2 listening researchers because it releases incoming information not only about the author --- Dr. John Field, but also other wellknown scholars in the circle.
The book also provides criteria of listening difficulty and detailed teaching techniques that L2 listening teachers can apply in their language classroom. It is a practical book.

Excellent resource

It started a little slow for me - preaching to the choir about the current state of teaching listening. However, the ideas, activities, and citations throughout are extremely informative. I am in the midst of revamping a speaking/listening course for advanced English learners and have found this book invaluable.
