A seminal work in Philosophy - A Tribute to Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860)

Fadel Sabry's second edition of The Will's Harmonic Motion offers an astounding accounting for human conduct, moral behavior, and the perpetual interaction between the will and the intellect. His analysis is fearless in its coverage of detailed facets of what he calls the will's harmonic motion, a gradual shifting of each individual through various character types during repeated rebirths and successive lifetimes on earth.
Perhaps most compelling is Sabry's thoroughness, for he delves into each aspect of the human condition with almost alarmingly consistent explanations. Through reading his book, one comes to actually understand how the will and the intellect propel human behavior within the divine comedy, an internal system of justice where each individual commits immoral deeds and then expiates misbehavior by living another, less desirable, life.
Even if a reader has no interest in such a rational system of philosophy, they are sure to enjoy Sabry's comprehensive description of Type I characters. In this ten-page elaboration, the reader will readily recognize domineering characters they have known (or possibly even themselves), and learn why Type I characters exist and how they impact those closer to salvation, in Types II through IV.
Seeing the word salvation, one wonders whether Sabry deals with religion. And, if that, what about life after death, sexual behavior, meditation and a host of other controversial subjects, usually considered sacred cows by academics whose main fear in life seems to be criticism by other academics? The answer is yes, he fearlessly covers all topics, and even weaves them into a rational philosophical system.
He writes on the basis of the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), whose profound impact on human knowledge is well known. However, rather than studying Schopenhauer's historical impact, Sabry has dedicated his book as "The Completion of Schopenhauer's Philosophy," attempting to refresh Schopenhauer's approach to metaphysics and the will and, at the same time, respond to Schopenhauer's comment on how a person acquires an intelligible character. He refers to the 1800's philosopher's comment - "perhaps someone after me will shed some light in this abyss."
Frankly, one may well disagree with Sabry's system, especially when it comes to rebirth of an individual in various character types. Also, because Sabry is willing to make courageous assertions, other details are likely to grate on the typical reader's belief. However, there is great value in seeing his reasoning when it comes to the analysis of human behavior. (And, as a related note, please know that he covers animal behavior too.)
I recommend the book, not only as a useful exposition of profound philosophical thought, but also a giant mirror in which the typical reader can view his own character and moral behavior and account for its impact on what Sabry calls the divine comedy. Read the book and ask: My most regrettable behaviors - where and how am I?

Paradox and Counterparadox introduces the English-speaking public to the first results of a research plan drawn up my the Milan Center for Family Studies at the end of 1971 and put into practice at the beginning of 1972. The book reports the therapeutic work carried out by the authors with fifteen families, five with children presenting serious psychotic disturbances, and ten with young adults diagnosed as schizophrenics in acute phase.

Though accepting the Bleulerian term schizophrenia, by now in general use, the authors have used it to indicate not the sickness of an individual–as in the traditional medical model–but a peculiar pattern of communication inseparable from the other patterns of communication observable in the natural group (in this case, the family) in which it manifests itself.

Starting from the position that modern sciences concerned with communication emphasize the central role of paradox as the source of paralyzing disturbances as well as of creative transformations, the authors demonstrate that it is possible to intervene in a family in schizophrenic transaction by devising original and paradoxical methods in order to release the action-pattern from disturbance to transformation. The counterparadoxes generated in this process, illustrated through a great number of examples, are rigorously analyzed in accordance with the conceptual models provided by general systems theory, by cybernetics, and by the pragmatics of human communication.

The reader will recognize, in the cases presented, the stimulating originality and efficacy of this approach, one whose interest exceeds the purely clinical and which offers new points of departure for an ecologic vision of human relationships.

This book will make the brilliant work of Mara Selvini Palazzoli and her gifted team more widely known in this country. The internal consistency of their approach–combining a systemic theory of family with a systemic theory of change–results in a therapy that is elegant, powerful, and economic. Using their knowledge of families as natural, rule-governed systems, the team proposes a hypothesis to explain the function of a problem in the family. They then base an intervention–paradoxical or otherwise–upon this hypothesis. The intervention serves to validate (or disprove) the hypothesis and to suggest further moves. The moves themselves are astoundingly compact. Palazzoli and her team are masters of the art of co-opting the resistance. They use the forces deployed by the family against change to produce change. It is as if one were to use the rules of Alice's Looking-Glass Kingdom to break the looking-glass. After the solemnity which surrounds the practice of the therapeutic art in this country, it is refreshing to find a practice which relies upon drama, wit, surprise, and (of course!) paradox. Finally - a scientific look at the advantages of dyslexia

Now "THIS" is the book I have been waiting for. As a dyslexic myself and the parent of at least one dyslexic (and gifted) child - this book is life changing, especially in terms of the educational outlook for my children. The Eides have done what so many "claim" to do in their books, but never really get there. They show clear, concrete, and proven advantages to the way the brain works for dyslexics, and shows why those advantages have "trade offs" when it comes to learning things such as reading, writing, and spelling. Basically, the way the dyslexic brain works, people with dyslexia tend to be much, much better than average in four particular areas - described as the M.I.N.D. areas. These cover things such as being able to see objects in 3D and manipulate them on ones mind (a great skill for Engineers, designers, builders, etc.), the ability to see advanced and complex connections between things (an amazing skill for systems engineers, entrepreneurs, psychologists, lawyers, etc.), amazing long term memory, etc. While these advantages are amazing, great, needed, and should be utilized to the best of ones ability - these advantages are there because the dyslexic brain is wired in such a way to support them. The down side is this wiring is the most inefficient way to learn the skills of reading, writing, and spelling. While those are true downsides, that doesn't mean dyslexic individuals can't learn to read, write, and spell - most do. The Eides just show a much better route to those skills.
Another BIG thing I love about this book is how they extensively cover accommodations (like speech-to-text software and digital books). In most dyslexic individuals, there will be a point in which one reaches diminishing returns in terms of reading, writing, and spelling - no matter how much intervention they won't get any better than that point. However, that doesn't mean their learning must stop - the proper accommodations will allow these individuals to reach their full potential in life. And surprisingly, the full potential of a dyslexic is actually more "successful" than a non-dyslexic. Dyslexic individuals are over represented in the top tiers among almost all professions - especially the sciences, engineering, and creative fields (writing, acting, art, music, etc.). Yes, dyslexics who struggle with reading and writing turn out to be amazing writers of everything from fiction to fantasy books (and I suppose one accommodation is hiring a good editor who can see past the spelling mistakes to the amazing content).
The last part of the book deals with the best ways of teaching reading, spelling, and writing to dyslexic individuals - from elementary to college to adults in the workplace. The advice and tips are amazing and I plan on incorporating many of them immediately into our homeschooling plans. They also cover proper accommodations depending on the skill and level of the individual. Another important point of this section is to also encourage the strengths of individuals with dyslexia. Again - there is going to be a point of diminishing returns in teaching reading and writing based skills - so also focus on those areas in which dyslexic individuals thrive.
Another area is the best educational options for gifted individuals. Now this will be the area many parents will struggle with. The truth is traditional school environments are NOT set up to accommodate dyslexic individuals. It isn't for lack of want, but many educational institutions just don't fully understand dyslexia for what it is, and what it isn't. As a result, the best fits for dyslexic students (at least for some time in their for educational years) might be special education classrooms (those that focus on education and not so much behavior I am assuming), schools that specialize in teaching dyslexic students, private schools that allow children to work at their own pace (think Sundry or Reggio or Montessori), and finally homeschooling.
The final chapter and another gem of this book is the resources section. It has websites and resources to cover the tips they described in the text.
A lot of thought and and research, and I believe passion and love went into this book. Again, it really will be a life changer for many individuals with dyslexia (heck, there is even a section that covers adult dyslexics in the workplace!)

Especially helpful for parents of dyslexic children!

Any parent of a dyslexic child soon learns two things: 1) their child is very bright but thinks and learns differently from peers, 2) the educational system does not serve them very well. Our struggles as parents are often immense as we work to advocate for our dyslexic child in a society that, more often than not, discards a dyslexic intellect as inferior and unlikely to succeed in life. This wonderful book explains through example after example how the complete opposite is the case. Dyslexic minds may have troubles with conventional ways of "doing things" but it is for that reason that they have been the pivotal forces behind discoveries and innovations that have led our culture forward for centuries (if not millennia).

This book is not just for parents of dyslexic children, but for anyone who is interested in in deepening their understanding of the human mind/brain and especially those who are interested in correlations between mentation and society. This is an engaging read, full of beautiful thoughts by many of the most influential minds of contemporary society. The Eides (both MDs) bring their extensive knowledge together in a book unlike any other on the market. It will change the way you look, not just at dyslexics, but at how we, as a society, are all too quick to judge those who are "different".

The best resource so far!

I'm 39 years old and ran my own landscaping business for 20
years. I all ways had problems with reading, writing and math. I failed the sixth grade and was sent off to boarding school. Unfortunately witih the bad economy I lost my business. Now it was time to face my demands once again. I tried going back to school to improve my skills, for some reason I thought
Things would be different. They weren't.

To make a long story short I've been through tons of testing over the years. They all said one thing, that I was lazy. I was tested again and was diagnosed as having dyslexia. I bought this book soon afterwards. It was one of the best resources I've come across yet. I found myself in so many instances. I think this book would be positive for anybody with this problem.

About the Author
Laura Desfor Edles (PhD, University of California, Los Angeles, 1990) is Professor of�Sociology at California State University, Northridge. She is the author of Symbol and Ritual�in the New Spain: The Transition to Democracy after Franco (1998) and Cultural Sociology�in Practice (2002), as well as various articles on culture, theory, race/ethnicity, and social�movements.

Scott Appelrouth (PhD, New York University, 2000) is Professor at California State�University, Northridge. His interests include sociological theory, cultural sociology, and�social movements. He has taught classical and contemporary theory at both the graduate�and undergraduate levels, and has published several articles in research- and teaching-oriented�journals on social movements, theory, and the controversies over jazz during the
1920s and rap during the 1980s. His current research focuses on political discourse in�American party platforms.

This textbook does a very good job of presenting the theories of classical sociologists. It is designed for a classroom, not for casual reading. However, it would still be applicable for the latter.

About the Author
Alan Frieze is a Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania. He has authored more than 300 publications in top journals and was invited to be a plenary speaker at the Seoul ICM 2014. In 1991 he received the Fulkerson prize in discrete mathematics.

Michał Karoński is a founder of the Discrete Mathematics Research group at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. He has authored over 50 publications and currently serves as co-Editor-in-Chief of Random Structures and Algorithms.
