Very Powerful and Convicting, With Some Faulty Theology

These are powerful lectures on what constitutes a religious revival, how to encourage or promote a religious revival, and what can be done to maintain a revival experience in the life of the Christian and in the life of the church.

Charles Finney understands a religious revival to be the work of man, when we renew our first love with Christ. A religious revival is a new beginning of obedience to God. It results in the backslidden person or church returning to its first love (Jesus), and in the conversion of sinners. God is involved in the revival process insofar as he providentially arranges for men and women to be encountered with the truth of the gospel. Yet a revival cannot take place without the cooperation of the penitent sinner, he or she must repent of their sins and seek the Lord with all their heart (Jeremiah 29:13). This understanding of a revival shows that Finney emphasizes the work of man right alongside the work of God, which would be anathema for Calvinists.

Finney also stresses that people need many revivals. If our love grows cold, or our hearts become crusty, it is because we need to remember the height from which we have fallen and repent and do the things we did that led to our first revival. Finney contends that we need to be reconverted, or a person who was once a revived believer could end up in hell.

He points out that a revival can be expected when God reveals to His people that the time is right for one. Also, when the Christian community and the clergy are united in their intense desire to see a revival that will bring about the salvation of the wicked, an awakening can be expected. Finney would also point out that the church would need to be open to God doing it any way He wants.

He goes on to mention that in order to promote a revival, Christians should confess their sins one by one. Finney regards this as absolutely essential, since we committed them one by one, they need to be confessed and forsaken one by one. Moreover, it will do no good to merely confess them or to trust that over time, God will grant repentance unto life. God has mandated that we all repent of our sins of omission (things that we neglected to do, such as prayer, Bible reading, giving, self denial, etc) and our sins of commission (slander, lying, cheating, hypocrisy, and envy, among others).

Beginning with page 342 of Lectures on Revival of Religion, Finney gives advice to Christians on how to respond when someone asks "What must I do to be saved?"

His advice is to tell the sinner to change his mind about sin, to confess his sins and vow to forsake them, and to believe the gospel of Christ, that He died for us and rose again, and to submit to God completely.

Unfortunately, it seems that Finney believes that a person may need to be reconverted again and again. It is hard to know if Finney is suggesting that a Christian may backslide to an unsaved condition and may need salvation again, or if the expression "reconvert" is merely an expression of being reconverted to a totally sold out lifestyle for Christ. Probably both, since Finney shows contempt for the idea that a person can be "once saved, always saved." If this assessment is true, it would put Finney's understanding of the security of the believer in sharp contrast with Edwards, who would only assume the integrity of a revival experience if the person is faithful to the end.

I should also say that Finney has a plain way of speaking (these lectures were delivered extemporaneously and transcribed), and he is also quite funny, especially in the lecture about the wrong things to say to a sinner on the verge of accpeting Christ.

I recommend not only reading this book, but following Finney's steps in promoting revival in your own life (pages 31-44). But watch out for his erratic theological pronouncements (the need for Christian people to be reconverted again and again, his radical emphasis on man's role in salvation, and in his denial that revival is a supernatural work of God. Get past the theology and take his advice on the practical side of living an awakened life for Jesus Christ.

A classic work on revival

This book is a classic work on revival. Finney shares biblical insight, helping one to recognize when revival is needed, when to expect it, and how to promote it. He emphasises the fact that we as people have a vital part in revival, but he also emphasises the role of Holy Spirit, without which revival would be impossible. He touches on witness, preaching, means to promote revival, repentance and many other topics dealing with winning the lost and christian living. History has shown that when the principles in this book have been applied, revival has taken place. This book has been read by people,resulting in conviction and leading many to salvation. While this is only a book written by a man, I firmly believe that Charles Finney was guided by biblical principles, and God has blessed this work. A must read for all who long to see God glorified in the salvation of mankind.

Best Book On Revivial next to the Bible

As a trained lawyer Finney's is very organised writer and the Title says Lectures. This is a clearly written and a very powerful book. Finney sees revival the way a farmer sees crops. You prepare the ground (heart), you plow (pray), plant seed(Word of God), you water (repent of sin) Trust God to give the growth. Not a book on over night jack in the bean stalk growth. But a timely book now as when first written. Read Finney auto Biography to more clearly understand the Second Great Awakening in America. The first being 1740-1750's Johnathan Edwards and George Whitefield's ministry. This book when read with Bible in Hand will do no harm and possibly much good. It is one of a dozen or more great books on religion that has had a great impact on my Christian life. You will be stirred if you read it. It is not perfect but written by a man trying to be perfect even a s God is perfect. A great Book on Sowing and Reaping. Note: Finney was not a get salvation lose salvation preacher. He did begin to believe it was possible for a man to chose to forsake Christ after having been converted. This required a active choice of unbelief not an accidental falling away or by sinning to much. This doctrine was a result of his seeing fruit that he thought was once gathered seeming to fall away back into unbelief. This Book will be a great blessing to who read and to all who read it like the Bereans searching the scriptures to see if it is true. W.A. Criswell wrote of one of his books "Reading this book is like eating fish, if you come to a bone you can't swallow, just chew around it." So take advantage of this reprint Buy, Borrow it from some one who has it. It will stir your soul and provoke you to good works for Christ.

Watered down jumping off point - easy on the eyes

For what it is, it's wonderful. One must take into consideration that this is a non-fiction comic book and as such, it takes some liberties in the sake of brevity. We are talking about summing up a whole culture into less than 250 pages. Comments such as "this book is too general" or "it takes too many liberties" failed to see what this book is intended to be - a general overall for people with virtually no background knowledge of Korea. To that end, this book excels.

I also commend this book in its comparison with Japan, China, and America. The author has taken a vast amount of information and condensed it into very approachable subjects such as cultural identity, leadership and economic growth.

Let's not forget that this book is driven by it's artistic style which is quite pleasant and not distracting the least. For an animator, the script is well written and translated which includes very native-English references and subtle jokes that demonstrate his dedication tot he project.

All in all, it's a great non-academic read that is recommended to anyone looking to take an introduction to Korea without having to dig through countless volumes of ancient history and poorly translated, nationalistic rhetoric.

A very informative book about Korea

This book is, of course, a comic book for adults, which means that it is perhaps more simplified than a book consisting entirely of text might be. On the other hand, the drawings are clever and it presents the material in a way that says things than could not be said so intelligibly in a text-only book. It starts off with the disclaimer that it is comparing Korea only to the 50 wealthiest nations, rather than the 200+ that actually exist. Then it gets into a comparison of China, Japan and Korea based on the unique history of each country. There are a number of topics that I was entirely unaware of, such as the way in which some relatives must be addressed by a specific title (younger brother's wife, older nephew's wife) rather than by name, and the fact that Korean food is always highly spiced and served boiling hot.

It is the most amusing history of a country I have ever read. It is somewhat like the Mexican cartoonist Rius' books on Cuba and East Germany that I read long ago. Except for the fact that Rius was a Marxist and the author of this book is not. The humor shown in the drawings, however, is similar.

Most Americans know nothing about Korea, and this is a really good book to start with. The author is a South Korean who tries hard to be objective and mostly succeeds.

Great artwork, entertaining, unfortunately plagued by ignorance and propoganda - publisher apologized over anti-semetic claims

Great artwork, entertaining, unfortunately plagued by ignorance and propoganda. The book is 9900 Won retail.

Sadly this book is insulting and stereotypical of other cultures, and some of its claims were naeve or absurd to the point that I thought it was comedic satire..until I realized the author wasn't being sarcastic. I'm shocked at some of the ignorant assumptions and outright insults being spewed against other cultures. It's hard to tell which parts are intentional propaganda, and which parts are just ignorance. It shares a lot in common with North Korean texts I've read and Japanese revisionist textbooks, only cuter with cartoon characters and more international anecdotes.

First off, I think Korea has a rich and amazing culture and is a wonderful place and I've visited many times and have many friends both here and in Korea. I learned Korean and traveled every corner of the country and studied its history. It happens that I also think India and about a dozen other countries are great nations and cultures too. My comments only pertain to the outrageous things being said by this book, despite many good things about it.

Early on the book says a lot of things about what all Chinese people believe and why they did everything in their history. Half the time I was laughing, the other time I couldn't believe anyone could be this ignorant. The fact that the author even tries to make these kind of claims speaks for itself.

I noticed it even claims and I quote "China has shown a great deal of tolerance regarding Taiwan". That's funny, for most of the last 50 years China has threatened to invade on a yearly basis. China is about as tolerant as North Korea is of the South. Which I guess isn't a surprise since some South Koreans think that's true too. This claim is basically as outrageous as saying Korea is one country. The book is filled with this ignorance about dozens of countries.

The book simplifies history with childlike logic. For example it literally says that because England is an island like Japan, its people chose to modify foreign cultures a la the Catholic Church to the Anglican church. First of all, this happened because King Henry wanted a divorce and was refused by the Pope, in fact he had 6 wives in his life. It had little to do with the English people or culture (the actual point being made), foreign cultures (what?), or the fact that England is an island. By its own logic if this was the real reason, England would have gotten rid of the Catholic Church a thousand years before it actually did. I'm not going to cover the other hundred claims but this example shows the kind of logic being used.

What's ironic is a lot of claims really apply to Koreans as much as Japan or China. Early on it claims Chinese always think they're the best, when many Koreans think this way as well if not more so. The reality is this is simply a stereotype, and its disingenuous to suggest this is a Chinese stereotype and not a Korean or Japanese one as well.

The author even oversimplifies his own culture. He claims the reason Japan is 1% Christian and Korea 30%+ Christian boils down to Japan being animistic and Korea being shamanistic and animists think there are many gods but shamans think everything is one god. He can't explain the fact that much of Japan converted to Christianity even faster than Korea in the 16th century, until they were literally murdered by the masses or forced to renounce their religion by a military government. Or that many Koreans, even non-Christians, respected Christians for their opposition during Japanese occupation and that Christianity has genuine appeal for many Koreans.

The Korean economic growth is indeed a miracle, a credit to hard work and converging factors. What's insulting is they've dismissed all the other nations and their achievements in broad strokes. It says that since Germany and Japan were already "economic powerhouses" before being demolished in WWII, their economic miracles are anything but. Then it dismisses over a hundred 3rd world countries from comparison by saying it's easy for a third world country to post high growth. Classic. Essentially, the logic of this author is that any country more advanced than Korea isn't worth comparing to for one reason, and any country less advanced than Korean isn't worth comparing to either.

Almost every claim requires an asterisk and fine print. For example, "If you eliminate 75% of countries from consideration, Korea is the most blah blah", or "This has never happened in another country" when it's simply false and should be explained by another asterisk (but not).

The book swerves back and forth between fact and fiction, relying on technicalities. Well if we want to get technical, Korea isn't even a country. There's North Korea, and South Korean. Korea hasn't been a country for almost a hundred years. If you think that's being too technical and callous, try reading what this book has to say about other countries.

The book also makes two puzzling claims that Korea was a vassal was under China and only as a formality, and that Korea is constantly under invasion and the victim of aggressors. That's funny considering even in Korean museums they acknowledge the historical fact that Korea was a vassal of the Mongols and twice invaded Japan under them. These invasions, although failures, were extremely brutal and sadistic and ironically only exceeded by the Japanese invasions of Korea. The fact is Korea was a full vassal and launched joint military strikes as such, and it's pretty malicious to pretend this never happened. What actually happened is pretty generous to Korea - they had little choice but to be vassals and agree to invade with the Mongols and send troops.

Now the book actually has a lot of good content and interesting commentary. It's just constantly mixed in with garbage and propaganda. So I enjoyed a lot of content at the same time as I'd roll my eyes thinking "Oh not this again". The author clearly read the cliff notes of history and filled in the blanks with classic child logic.

The author clearly has talent and a lot of funny things to say. If the author had turned this into satire, it would have worked for a chapter or two until it revealed that this book itself represents the distorted view Koreans have about the world. But it doesn't and goes through pains to explain and qualify itself, and that's why it's not even satire.

Korea is such as wonderful place, even people I've known who went to North Korea tell of how no matter how corrupt the government the good of individuals is hard to defeat. This book is an exception to that, the South Korean analogy to North Korean and Japanese propoganda.

I read it so many times, the binding fell off.

I read this book at a fairly tender age at the instigation of my grandfather, a Peck himself, and was charmed not only with the elegant Victorian prose, but also with the absolutely hideous pranks the Bad Boy plays on his poor parents. Thoughts of child (and parent) abuse never entered my mind; all I wanted was to be able to strap my baby sister to a goat and let the pair roam free through the garden. I read it again and again, and demolished my copy; now I have another one. Wonderful book, but don't let your impressionable kids read it, unless you plan to spend your spare time keeping an eye on them, because it WILL give them ideas.

I read this at age 12 and I laughed all the way through it. My copy was printed about the turn of the century but the outlandish practical jokes this boy plays on his parents and the local merchants are timeless. However, through it all the boy is endowed with a good heart. He is generally kind to smaller children, girls, and those less fortunate than himself. But for adults that are not up to his moral standards, and they are very loose at times, he shows no mercy. He picks on everyone, his parents, the clergy, shopkeepers, and anyone and anything, that in his opinion deserves it. The story about the loud mouthed parrot that only knows insulting phrases and speaks his mind during a prayor meeting in the boys house is priceless.

The healing laughter as a gift from this selection.

I read this book the summer of my 14th year (I'm now 65), and to this day I can feel the physical results (Healing, actually) of the intense laughter that ensued. Playing cards in church, lengths of white rubber tubing in macaroni, fireworks completely out of hand, and a hernia truss filled with red ants; all of this, and more, served my youth in most delightful ways. It was my father's book (well-used then [he's now almost 88]), and he was away at summer school getting his Masters Degree when I found it. My mother (now 85) would join in the hysterics as I shared the stories with my two brothers and baby sister. To this very day we revisit those moments. For years I have searched for a copy (ours having been lost in some move). The search is something akin to a seeking after such innocence by today's youth.
I'm in private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor today. In that setting I see many 'troubled' young people and their parents. Was "Peck's Bad Boy . . ." troubled? You be the judge. Read it, if at all possible ! ! !

great book

This book was helpful in helping me understand what healthy boundaries looked like. If I had them and realized the importance of using them, I would have been protected from the Spath that I allowed into my life. But, I also wouldn't have my daughter or be the woman that I am today. Great book on boundaries or "rules" and how to create and enforce them. But most importantly it brings about the understanding that you will never know if a guy cares for you unless you give him boundaries so he can prove to you he does. How will you know he cares? He'll follow your rules.

20 years of marriage with a Psychopath has left my boundaries shreded. He could never admit that my emotions, thoughts or point of view was mine; never give me an "uh huh" when I spoke, much less a "really!" or "cool." He stole (or tired to steal) my words, thoughts, conversations and relationships if he liked them; and invalidated me and them when he didn't. It's been a hard recovery, but books like this have helped a lot.

This is an essential read.

This will take you a day to read and will change your point of view. I am a person who always looks for the good in others. I stubbornly thought that would give me a magic power. Not true. The world is how it is. People are people. Some weaker than others and as the book said more than willing to take, take and take some more. Develop yourself, your senses and boundaries to filter out the good ones. Read this book!

Effective organ primer

This book does quite well for teaching someone the basics of playing the organ, for which purpose I'm reviewing it today. It also could practically serve as a reference for how to service an organ, which I didn't really need to know, but wasn't too annoying. I came from a long piano background before I started organ, and I found it a very difficult to transition. This book recognizes that for many, the new fingering that is required by organ is harder than the challenge of pedaling. I certainly found it that way, having to keep my hands legato while reading three lines, playing pedal, and pulling stops. Good comprehensive beginning tool.
