OK for $4.99 - can't imagine what the losing stories were like.

I may have mentioned it once or twice, but in case you missed it – I would by a limited edition bound copy of Stephen King’s grocery list if he ever decided to do something like that. Yes, that’s how much I love the man’s writing. On top of that, it’s published by Cemetery Dance Publications (which I may have also mentioned more than once). With those two things going for it, I knew it just had to be a win… until I discovered that the stories weren’t actually BY King, but chosen by him. When Bizarre of Bad Dreams came out, King ran a short story contest for Hodder & Stoughton Publications – a well-known UK Publishers. The stories contained within are the winner, followed by the five runner-ups. To be honest, besides the fact that it was a very quick read, some of the stories were disappointing to say the least; and I’d hate to see what the losing stories were.

1) Wild Swimming by Elodie Harper – This was the winner. While this wasn’t my least favorite, it most certainly, in my opinion, wasn’t the best. First, I’m not a fan of the way it was written; a one way email communication. Second, the story was very predictable, it really only had one ending that the reader was able to discover very early on in the story.

2) Eau-de-Eric by Manuela Saragosa – This was one of my favorites. I thought I saw the ending coming, and while I didn’t get it exactly, it was just creepy enough to be relatable; especially if you have children.

3) The Spots by Paul Bassett Davis – This was, hands down, my least favorite of the lot. The story made no sense, and again, only had one plausible ending. I agree with King when he says, “Never tell too much. The monster is always scarier when it is still under the child’s bed…” however, in this story, there needed to be more explanation to make it more relatable.

4) The Unpicking by Michael Button – This story takes a well-known theme, and ups the ante. You may want to put a lock on your child’s toy box in the future. Just saying. Well written, and creepy.

5) La Morte De L’Amant by Stuart Johnstone – A story about clichés should be described with one, avoid it like the plague. There was nothing creepy, scary, or disturbing about this story – except for how it wound up in this anthology. Absolutely nothing happens, and what’s left to the imagination is nothing short of a typical CSI episode.

6) The Bear Trap by Neil Hudson – This was my favorite; hands down. Another story where I thought I had the ending figured out, and was pleasantly surprised to find out that I didn’t; in fact, I wasn’t even close.

So, there you have it. Six stories, and read like the Sergio Leone movie: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The eBook price of $4.99 makes it worth checking out since it comes to less than a dollar a story. And even if you only like a few of them, you’re still only out the price of a Starbucks. But still, I find it hard to believe that these were the top choices by the master himself.

Love Stephen King's Choices

I was very excited to read stories that Stephen King deemed good enough to be in this book. Wild Swimming, Eau-De-Eric and The Bear Trap were my favorites. There are no jump out at you scary stories but they are all creepy in their own way. This is definitely worth reading but it is pretty short. I read the book in around 45 minutes.

When any author attaches their name to anything, their fans take notice. When Stephen King attached his name to Six Scary Stories, he was making a statement to potential buyers: these stories are scary. They aren't. There may be elements that are disturbing, thrilling, or bizarre, but with the exception of the first tale (which wasn't all that scary either), I would say these are just six stories masquerading as scary.

I'll agree with Stephen King on one thing: of these six stories, the winner was the most entertaining of the bunch. The other five, whittled down from a contest pool of eight hundred, are all over the place. Most are forgettable, the lone exception being La Morte De L’Amant, a tale I found exciting, but never horrifying.

Too Much For Too Little

This is a 30 page booklet consisting of the transcription of 14 letters written by General J.E.B. Stuart to his wife in 1861. While the letters are very interesting, the cost of the booklet seems a bit excessive. The quality of the paper used & the printing is excellent in the booklet, but it still does not warrant the cost. There is only one copy of an actual letter, with the remainder being transcriptions. The footnotes attached have only the most basic of information. While I enjoyed the booklet & am glad to add it to my collection of books related to The War Between The States, I erred by not reading the description more thoroughly before purchasing.

Sierra Fox thought her life would be a little easier now that she has paid off the huge debt she owed the Spook Catcher Council when she went freelance. But if anything her life is even more complicated. The relationship she always wanted with Jonathan is falling apart and the man who tempts her, Jason Papan, a PI, is recovering from injuries in her house to keep him safe. If that isn't enough, there is something strange going on with the ghosts - they are disappearing all over the city.

Sierra knows that being a spook catcher is more than just putting ghosts in lock up; she also tries to help the ghosts that she can. Sierra with the help of Jason and her apprentice investigates what going on. As they find out each new answer the truth gets closer and closer a place she knows very well, but just who is behind it and more important why? Personal relationships, friends and family are at risk as Sierra and Jason finally get to the bottom of the disappearances and fight to get rid of the evil that started it all. When the battle is over, will Jason and Sierra have a chance to see where their feelings can go or will Sierra be the next one to disappear?

When ghosts and spook catchers start disappearing, Sierra and Jason put their budding relationship at risk to hunt down the answers in Split at the Seams. I had a feeling that Sierra and Jonathan were done when we last left them and they ended just as Sierra and Jason exploded and finally gave in to the feelings they had been trying to ignore for months now. I wasn't surprised that they teamed up quickly to find out what was happening to the ghosts in Sydney or that they would risk so much to protect the other person. I will admit that I was surprised by the "why" more than the "who" when the final answers came on what was going on. I loved how Sierra's actions when things were looking dim to prove she really is the best spook catcher in Sydney and can defeat evil on both sides of the veil. Split at the Seams has sexy areas, action areas and fun areas while being surrounded in suspense filled plot that will keep you wondering until the final answers are revealed.

This is one series you need to check out.

I really, really liked this book. It was so incredibly good (I like to use that phrase a lot for books I really like, lol). I would actually give it a 4 1/2 but with Amazon's rating system, I can't do that.

Sierra is turning into one of my favorite protagonist in the uf/pr genre. And I'm loving this world. She has faults but who doesn't. I love her relationship with Papan. Although, I'm confused on how to pronounce his name. Is it simply, Papan (like tapping but without the g) or puh-pan? Either way, I like him and loves how he calls Sierra Foxy Lady and not just because of her last name. Lol

Loving the developing relationship between Sierra and Oren. Sometimes you just have to let the past go and move on.

Still not sure how I feel about Ebony. Didn't love her too much in APOD, and not so sure in SATS. The girl just doesn't know how to listen. And that can get you into trouble.

Now for the other sleazy and skeezy men in Sierra's life, sayonara to one and hopefully the same to the others soon. Just saying.

Anyway, I just bought the third book. Definitely looking forward to On Pins and Needles.

difficult, fascinating, and compelling birth of a company

This is the story of the first few years of Vertex, a bioventure that sought to create drugs that were constructed molecule by molecule - it is supposed to be "rational drug design". In exchange for allowing the company to check his work for accuracy and proprietary disclosures, Werth was admitted into the inner circle of the company, with both executives and scientists, for four years.

Werth offers masterful descriptions of both the science and the intricacies of the busisess deals. The work is similar to that of Tracy Kidder in "The Soul of a New Machine" and, in my opinion, of the same quality.

At the center of the story is Vertex's founding visionary, Joshua Boger, formerly a researcher at Merck. He reasoned that instead of screening soil samples and insect secretions in a hot or miss approach in thousands of petri dishes, he could design drugs atom by atom to bind to - and thus inactivate - molecules instrumental to the disease process. In theory, these drugs would be without side effects: because of the precision of the design, they would adhere to their target alone, allowing beneficial enzymes of other chem reactions to go on unimpeded.

Boger's first target molecule was FKBP, which he believed was a crucial agent of the immune system. By blocking it, he hoped to prevent the host's body from rejecting transplanted organs. While Boger was out raising money (eventually reaching $60 million), Vertex's researchers hunkered down to isolate and analyze FKBP, whose molecular mechanic remained poorly understood.

Unfortunately, what happened is a great example of the difficulties in marrying business to cutting-edge science: after over two years of pushing themselves to the brink of nervous collapse, Vertex scientists found difficulties with FKBP. Even worse, Boger's arch rival, a prof at Harvard, discovered why. The prof beat VErtex, Werth argues, because he remained outside the venture capital game and could thus concentrate totally on the science and could openly collaborate with them rather than hide proprietary results.

Nonetheless, driven and confident as ever, Boger turned his scientific team onto the new problem. Thru all of this, Boger comes off as a fascinating character: the son of a suicide, he is unshakably convinced that he can bend nature as well as the business world to his will. The reader sees what lies behind the herculean efforts of him and his team.

Warmly recommended as a rivetting tale of human endeavor that embraces the true complexity.

Fast-paced and Insightful

I first read this book nearly two years ago as research for a novel I was writing. Recently, I turned to it once more to pick up a few terms and found myself reading chapter after chapter!
This non-fiction tale has enough twists and turns and drama to match any thriller on the market. An informative and engaging tale of a pharmaceutical start-up and the people involved. Joshua is interesting enough that the book could have been solely about him, but he isn't the only one. All of the players in this ego-driven mega-drama are interesting on many levels.
Who would I reccomend this book to? Anyone who likes a well-told story. A background in medicine is not needed, and neither is a knowledge of business practices. All you need to enjoy this book is a brain . . . and a night light because you'll be reading this book deep into the night.

A thouroughly enjoyable read, Werth sheds light on the personaliteis and complexities of an amazing and multifaceted business. Throughout, the author uncovers the unseen deal-making, hand-wringing, and fist clenching that dominate the start of Vertex, a strucure-based paharmaceutical firm.
I particularly enjoyed the background on the Boger-Schreiber collaboration and rivalry, and the ensuing rivalry in Vertex's own labs. Further, following the last few years of Vertex's ups and downs via the Internet has been thoroughly enjoyable.
Werth's style is easliy read, and his obvious unhindered access to Vertex and its people make the story enjoyable, suspenseful, and dramatic.

About the Author
Ross King, Ph.D., is Professor of Korean and Head of the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia. He completed his B.A. in Linguistics at Yale and his doctorate in Linguistics (Korean) at Harvard.

Jaehoon Yeon, Ph.D., is Professor of Korean Language and Linguistics and Chair of the Centre of Korean Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. He has published many books and articles on Korean grammar and linguistics.

Elementary Korean is the best

After studying Korean (on my own using internet sources etc etc) I have decided that this book is definitely by far one of the best books you can get for Korean. It contains an incredible amount of information. Most courses are quite small for Korean and do not contain a great deal, or are hard to manage. I have looked at the Rosetta Stone series for Korean (costing $300) and this $50 book is by far better than that whole program. It is better than any books I have seen in book stores. I have done the Pimsleur course which is a little strange in my opinion. Pimsleur does help with pronunciation a little bit but some of the language structure is a bit weird and not natural for the Korean Language. I feel that ever since I bought this book a couple weeks ago (I am on lesson 6 out of 15 I believe) I am learning at a much faster pace than I ever was before.

It contains many many grammar points for every chapter and introduces them in a nice order (meaning you get important stuff first unlike some other courses I have looked at where you have to wait till near the end of the course to really dig into some good grammar).

I admit, this course is really hard and does contain a lot of information right from the start and might be hard on someone who does not know anything about Korean, but if you have already begun looking into the Korean Language, I highly recommend this. I do not know how good of a job it does teaching Hangul as I already knew most Hangul when beginning this book, but I do know it covered some points and specific irregulars and pronunciation rules that I had not previously known so it probably is very good at Hangul as well. Others have said to do the 2 Hangul chapters first, which might be a good idea to someone who does not know it. It should be a pretty good book for teaching Hangul but I am not entirely sure if it teaches well and easy to understand for someone who does not know Hangul, but it seems to do a good job. The first two chapters on just basic sentences and sayings people should know were alright in my opinion. Chapter 1 is good because it deals with just simple things like yes, no, nice to meet you, thank you, etc...But honestly, the romanization confuses me very very much so I would learn Hangul first (it has both romanization and Hangul in the chapters 1 and 2 because they do not introduce Hangul until chapter 3). The romanization has a chart for how to pronounce all the strange letters they use for romanization and all, and I honestly think Hangul would be much easier to learn than learning romanization used in these two chapters. But if you know the Hangul (which is covered in the book) then chapter 1 is very good. Chapter 2 covers basic information on what a teacher might say in the classroom or the students, which didn't do much for me as I am learning completely on my own. 3 and 4 is Hangul. Chapter 5 is where this book finally really kicks in. Starting with Chapter 5 you have all your lists of vocabulary, your dialogues, and many explanations on grammar. Chapter 5 is where it gets intense.

People have mentioned the audio cd is not very good. I disagree. I think it is excellent. Even though it is just one 74 minute cd (seemed like it wouldn't last very long) it has most anything on the cd you would want being pronounced. It does not give you time to repeat after them or does not say words twice, but it fits a lot of words and spoken Korean on the one cd. You can listen to it and figure out how the word should be said. The woman speaker speaks at a nice pace, while the male speaker is a little faster but still a nice pace in my opinion. Listening to the male speaker helps build your listening comprehension because when speaking with a real Korean it will be just as hard if not harder to understand. The cd is excellent in my opinion.

Lastly, I want to mention the exercises. There are exercises at the ends of the chapters (mainly beginning with Chapter 5 when the real lessons begin) which I highly recommend you doing. Luckily I am highly interested in the Korean language and find it very fun to learn so I can make myself do them. Some may seem a bit dull or long or pointless at first but I know that's not the case. When it says figure out what this is in Korean and write out the WHOLE sentence for each one, I highly recommend doing that. It will greatly help, even if it is a lot of work. It has all the answers (or answers that work - for example if it says translate this sentence into Korean, it will give a correct translation, when there are a couple different ways to translate it. That is the only problem I have found so far. Sometimes its hard to check your answers if your working on your own and they only give one possible solution...but, they do cover an answer for every exercise in the book.).

Overall, I like everything about this book. It covers everything very well.

Since I am looking mostly for reading/writing proficiency I find this to be a great book.

+ The grammar notes are clear and well illustrated.
+ The vocabulary is a lot but not completely overwhelming. The authors try to group closely related words physically close together to reduce the cost of learning new vocabulary.
+ Better than Myondo in presentation of material. Instead of spreading out related grammar material, it tries to present them together.
+ What I think is really great are the pronunciation rules ... you won't find this kind of practicality and detail in most other text. (Now, Myondo is very detailed but describing ssang-chiut as a voiceless alveo-palatal glottalized affricative isn't particularly helpful to me).
+ No Chinese characters are used in this book which is a plus at this level since Chinese characters rarely appear in the main text of popular Korean newspapers anyway
+ The authors actually provide a decent number of exercises with ANSWERS in the back! Now what they need to publish next is a supplementary reading and exercise book.

- I concur with a previous reviewer that the CD does not have enough basic sound examples.

Wonderful, but difficult book

As others have said, this book is difficult, but wonderful. It will not hold your hand, and you have to be dedicated to learning the language. Personally, I enjoy that its raw learning without all the fluffy stuff (corny graphics, etc). I love that it is all in Hangul without Romanizations (there are only Romanizations in chapters 1-3). I have used other texts that have full Romanizations and many times they end up hurting you in the end because they are wrong, inconsistant, and you become dependant on them. There is also a good Korean-English/English-Korean glossary in the back in Hangul-alphabetical order (most are not), so you don't really need a dictionary yet, but of course one wouldn't hurt (warning: the dictionary with the big L on the cover is good, but in Romanized-alphabetical order which can be a pain for looking up Hangul words). Here are some things that will help you though:
-Yes, the CD is super fast, but that is the normal speaking speed in Korea. What I did to make it easier to hear was to play the CD in Windows Media Player and use the "Play Speed" function to slow down the CD. It really helped!
-Have a very basic understanding of some linguistics terms such as voiced, unvoiced, unreleased, aspirated. The authors are trained linguistics and sometimes use some jargon, although it is usually explained.
-I highly recommend learning Hangul (the Korean alphabet) before starting this book. The authors do not introduce it (but still use it) until chapter 3, which is very difficult if you do not have a Korean teacher.
-That brings my last point. If you know a native Korean, make sure you use him/her as a resource. That probably goes without saying for any book. However, I have been learning Korean about 90% on my own, and have used this book as my guide fairly successfully (no fault of the book; it is just a HARD language to grasp).

Learn portraiture sculpting from a Pro

I've owned this book for years and use it constantly. It's covered in clay, sticky notes and hi-lighter marks. He gives you detailed info along with high quality photos in an attempt to teach you to see the finer points of your model. It's a must read if you are serious about improving.

As a forensic artist, I have found Philippe and Charisse Faraut's Portrait Sculpting book to be an inspiration filled with valuable information that I refer to constantly. Philippe Faraut explains his analytical approach to art and shares it with us in this book.
Not only is Philippe Faraut an incredible portrait sculptor, but he is a wonderful teacher as well. Faraut has the ability to simplify a complex subject, the human face, and makes it easy to learn how he creates sculptures that are so lifelike. His in-depth knowledge is broken down, step by step, in easy to understand exercises.
His devoted study of skeletal and muscle anatomy creates a powerful, confident, believable representation of the human face. It is Faraut's studies of human facial anatomy and sculpture that I have found so valuable to my work in forensic facial reconstructions. This book is full of quality photographs and valuable information for portrait sculptors and forensic artists of all skill levels.

This is the best instructional book on sculpting the human head that has ever been written, with clear and articulate text and photographs explaining his methods and techniques.
There is so much information in the book such as multiple resources, to find any materials you will need to sculpt with, and a lengthy bibliography to explore.
A must have book to be referred to again and again. I purchased this book when it was first printed and have used it as a constant resource of great information.
