almost useless book

This book is filled with way too much "fluff" and does not include information needed to answer some of the questions at the end of the chapter or online at evolve.. Just like another reviewer said there are contradictions. There are typos. This book really does not prepare you for NCLEX style questions. They do not provide enough information on what a nurse should know and how to care for the patients. The review questions on evolve reference wrong pages, contain typos, omit important words so that the question makes sense, will occasionally mark correct answers wrong, and the majority of the questions, including the ones in the book, are memory based questions which do not help much for class exams, HESI, or NCLEX. If your school is using this book and you have no choice be prepared for a huge headache and get yourself a good NCLEX book

Didn't find this book helpful at all. The pages are filled with more "filler" than actually information. Also, they didn't do a very good job of editing the info. There are lots of contradictions within the same chapters. They also don't elaborate or go into detail on things that are important to know. Not happy, especially for the high price of this book.

Still great but a quarter of the chapters require an access code!

I have been using the various editions of this book to teach Java programming for a number of years. In terms of content the previous editions of this book have been very solid and I would them a 5 star rating. Although this 10th edition continues the tradition of solid content, I cannot rate it above 4 stars because eight chapters (that used to be part of the printed book in the previous edition) are now only accessible online. This is both inconvenient and expensive.

The online material requires an access code that is valid for only a year. This code comes as part of a new copy of the book. If you buy a used copy(for which the code has already been used), or if your code expires you will need to buy another one year code to access those eight chapters.

Kindle Edition has no Publisher Website Access-Code

Be aware, if your buying the Kindle Edition of this book, there is no Access-Code to the Pearson publisher web-site, normally included in the paper edition, which provides additional video and help information. You can however, buy an Access-Code from the publisher for $30! ... so add that to the cost of your Kindle Edition.

Overpriced and half the book is "online".

Half of the book is not there!!! Half of the book is missing!!! Half of the book is provided "online" - you have to go to the Pearson website to download PDFs of half of the chapters - and even then, some of those chapters are "coming soon", and the most important chapter - the one I needed - is "coming soon" ! When? I needed to get this learning done this week. I am highly disappointed with these authors - they used to be respected subject matter experts. It was grossly overpriced to begin with and with half of it missing it is a total rip off. Never again for these authors.

Screed distracts from otherwise useful perspectives ...

This book is Dedicated on its initial page and then Preface to a rebuke of "an anonymous reviewer" whose critique of his journal article and his book on the best way to explain Entropy the author didn't like. Unfortunately, it continues as a screed against that reviewer and all others who disagree with his approach, with snarky asides throughout that get really, really tiring. I find it odd that no reviewer here to date other than Braithwaite mentions this off-putting weakness in presenting otherwise useful perspectives. About a quarter way through, you want to scream "Just Get Over It!" and throw the book away (I almost did), but if you can tolerate the pissing-contest remarks and make it past that point, he winds down the language on how stupid everyone is who disagrees with him, and his interpretations on Entropy are worthwhile food for thought, whether you agree with him or feel they are conclusive or not.

Very interesting approach to entropy with an analysis and conclusion I have never seen before. I am not on the level to really evaluate what he says but his analysis was novel and convincing to the degree I followed it.

I think thse interested in the subject this book is a must.

Entropy made exciting!

I'm a 60 year old engineer who has been on a quest to learn more about physics, science and new theories that have evolved since I left college. One of my targets was revisting the laws of thermodynamics. Professor Ben-Naim's book did not disappoint! I was intriqued with the connection of entropy to probability and uncertainty. This book is well written and a thorough explanation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics and the entropy of closed systems. I highly recommend reading this book, it was entertaining as well as enlightening. I totally enjoyed the histories and references. Great value and I purchased and read more of his books with more to follow.

Keira & Me is a richly detailed story about an African American girl learning about Homonyms and Homophones. She is the inquisitive student and her aunt is her teacher. Her classmates are some interesting characters with unusual names. For instance, Yum Yum is a cotton-top Tamarin, an endangered species from Central America. She learns where Central America is on the map. She also learns a little Spanish.
Keira and her classmates created a rap-song using words that were homophones and they added a beat to it. They were so excited to perform their new song and beat. Young readers are going to be entertained by reading and or listening to this tale.
Marsay Wells-Strozier's story is colorful and it demonstrates that learning can be so much fun.

A Classic From The Early Years

This review is for the boxed first edition of "Masks of Nyarlathotep".

As there is a current edition (4th at time of writing) available for under $40 it should go without saying that the boxed set is really a collector's item and collector asking prices will prevail.

The boxed set was produced while Call of Cthulhu Second Edition was in print. It will play without modification with any edition of the Call of Cthulhu rules from 1st to 4th. Minor changes will be needed in order to bring it into spec for 5th and 6th edition rules. These involve such petty issues as Oratory and Debate being combined as "Persuade" and possibly needing to adjust for a higher skill allocation under the later rules.

The tome reading rules will get in the way with this campaign if you run under edition 2+ rules, so you will have to hand-wave in places anyway. This is true of all the versions of Masks of Nyarlathotep, as is the need to read ahead extensively as a GM. The upside is that the reading is fun as the campaign is extremely well-conceived and written.

I bought this item years ago, in the mid 80s, new. If you are buying it today you should be aware that the box contained many components, and that it is entirely possible for some of these to be missing in a secondhand set.

From recent memory, the box contents should include:

2 business cards & 1 matchbox kit on glossy card sheet
1 booklet of handouts
1 New York booklet (blue cover)
1 London booklet (maroon cover)
1 Cairo booklet (yellow cover)
1 Nairobi booklet (brown cover)
1 Shanghai booklet (green cover)

(and sundry sheets of advertising matter)

The third and fourth editions (bound as books) contain a sixth chapter set in Australia which was edited out of this version and the second edition, but you will find most of that material in the sourcebook "Terror Australis" if you can find a copy.

This is a world-spanning campaign that sets the players on the trail of a missing playboy, The action starts in New York, but after that the players drive the direction of their investigations depending on which clues they choose to follow and in what order they follow them. The object is, of course, to avert world disaster. We are, after all, talking about Call of Cthulhu.

The quality of the materials in this boxed set was very high. The separate handout booklet makes photocopying a dream (not so with a perfectly bound paperback, the binding of choice for Chaosium these days, but the handouts for the 4th edition can be downloaded as a pdf file from the Chaosium website) so one can preserve the handouts for repeat play. The handouts are also double sided, so if you can reproduce that you can have newspaper clippings with realistic obverse sides and so forth.

The campaign itself suffers from an element of Time Crunch, and the GM may find him/herself having to introduce elements to push the investigation forward at a quicker pace on occasions. It is also very, very deadly. Even careful players will stand a very good chance of having characters killed from under them as the menace involves very active, very violent cults. Looking back on some notes I took on a run-through of this in the late 80s, I see that every player had a reserve character waiting in the wings and that some players lost both of them in a single session (some people never learn to tread softly of course).

Even so, players from that period (sadly the group no longer meets due to real-life getting in the way) often reminisce at get-togethers about various scenes and adventures they had in the course of Masks of Nyarlathotep, and I can't think of a better recommendation for the campaign than that.
