The Girl from Berlin: Gruppenf�hrer's Mistress is the second book in Ellie Midwood's historical fiction series, The Girl from Berlin. Annalise realizes that she is playing a very dangerous game when she asks for Gruppenf�hrer Dr. Kaltenbrunner's assistance in exacting revenge on her boss, Reinhard Heydrich, but she's mad with grief over his complicity in the suicide death of her brother Norbert and the resulting miscarriage of her and her husband's first child. While the leader of the Austrian SS has an evil reputation as a monster and a sadist, Dr. Kaltenbrunner has always been oddly gentle and attentive with her. And while he's initially taken aback at the audacity of her request, he agrees to start the process that will result in Heydrich's death.

Ellie Midwood's World War II historical fiction novel, The Girl from Berlin: Gruppenf�hrer's Mistress, is an outstanding and enthralling tale recreating the lives of Annalise and her husband as they work for the American Secret Service in the guise of loyal Germans working in the Reich Main Security Office. following Annalise's story as she carefully negotiates her way through love and war

War, spies, espionage, international intrigue, and romance—‘The Girl from Berlin: Gruppenf�hrer's Mistress’' provides everything an avid suspense reader could want. As far as thrillers go, it's up there at the top of my list.

I'm a sucker for WWII stories. I don't know what it is, but that era fascinates me. This is the second Ellie Midwood book I've read staged during this time period and I felt myself drawn in from the first paragraph. It takes up exactly where the first one left off, following Annalise's story as she carefully negotiates her way through love and war.

As an author, Ellie Midwood has that magical ability to create the kind of suspense that causes the reader to turn pages rapidly. Each chapter left me cliffhanging, and as the plot rose to a crescendo, it finally took me, completely off guard, to an unexpected ending.

A Pulse Pounding Page Turning Ride

Gruppenf�hrer’s Mistress is the continuation of the story of Annalise, a Jewish girl and a spy deep in the offices of the SS. Along with her husband, a highly placed SS officer, she is using her job to get information to the allies while doing everything in her power to redirect as many captive Jews and POWs away from the death camps. It is a precarious road she walks. Threat of discovery stalks her every move. Old enemies, and new ones, make it that much harder for her. She has found an unexpected and sometimes unwitting ally, her boss, chief of the RSHA. All he wants is to make her his.

To say this book is well written is an understatement. The characters are so complex and driven that they fit into the tapestry of the real life historical figures dotted throughout the story as their equals. I absolutely love how the author has made the Nazis human. Nazi Party war crimes are so heinous that it is so easy to sit back and judge it as a whole, making it easy to forget it was made up of individuals. Those who were just following orders and lived with it any way they could because they couldn’t see a way to protect what they loved by doing anything else. Those who found a way to work within the system to bring it to an end, yet still had to make hard decisions for the greater good that would scar their souls forever. Then there are the true monsters, who would have unleashed their evil on the world anyway and just lucked out to find a vehicle like the German war machine to amplify what they alone could have accomplished. It is a rich tapestry to set an unconventional love story against and Ellie Midwood has met the challenge admirably.

I thought the first book was good, This second installment in the series was a pulse pounding, page turning ride. This book reminds me why I have a rule against reading series books before I have all of the parts, because I get to the last page and...!
I am breathlessly awaiting the next book.

Excellent Historical Fiction With a Slice of Intrigue

The Gruppenf�hrer’s Mistress is second installment of Ellie Midwood’s The Girl from Berlin series. What’s even better is that while looking at Ellie’s author page on Amazon, I was happy to see that there’s a third installment already available!! The Gruppenf�hrer’s Mistress is the continuation of the story of Annalise Friedmann and her fight to avenge the murder of her brother and her battle to save as many Jews and POWs away from the German concentration camps.

I read the first installment, Standartenfuhrer's Wife and one of the things I commented on was Ellie’s characters. I appreciate it when I can become emotionally involved with a novel’s family of personalities. Gruppenf�hrer’s Mistress provided me the same emotional involvement. Some of the same characters are in this second installment along with some new friends and adversaries. Ellie takes a very dark period of mankind, World War II, Nazis, and the horrors of the Holocaust, and expertly creates a portrait where the reader sees both the human and evil sides of individuals.

I’m not going to give anything away, but when I reached the ending of the book I was taken completely by surprise. If you like historical fiction that is entwined with action and intrigue, you cannot go wrong by reading Ellie’s The Girl from Berlin: The Gruppenf�hrer’s Mistress.

This book will disturb most Christians...in the best way possible

When Helping Hurts is a compelling book that will be a significant help to the Church for years to come. The first chapter alone is worth the cost of the book and ought to be read by every church leader in every ministry category. This is not just a book for the missions committee (although it ought to be required for everyone involved in missions) or the Outreach Director, or the pastor. I think every Christian in America would benefit. Most evangelicals would be rattled.

There are several benefits from this book. Since most people read book reviews to try and determine whether they want to buy and read the book, let me mention those benefits.
It doesn't just pick on the Church or her leaders. This book is personal; it will pick on you. It was deeply convicting to me as I read it. I realized that as many times as I have been moved by stories about the fatherless and the widow, the poor and the sick, I am not purposefully living for my life, and leading that of my family, to intersect with these members of society. I have forsaken the needy by my enslavement to convenience and stuff. My house is conveniently situated away from poverty. I hardly see the needy. And then there is my busyness. All my important tasks that keep me far away spending myself on "behalf of the hungry" (Is. 58:10) are often where I find my own significance and worth. I am convicted that although I hold to the position that all humans are created in the image of God, I don't live as such. And I realize that I do have a god-complex (although every time I read that phrase in the book, my first reaction was, "No I don.....okay, I do. I do.").

The authors are not writing from lofty chairs in academia. They pen their own confessions. One of my favorites is, "I confess to you that part of what motivates me to help the poor is my felt need to accomplish something worthwhile with my life, to be a person of significance, to feel like II have pursued a noble cause...to be a bit like God...I sometimes unintentionally reduce poor people to objects that I use to fulfill my own need to accomplish something. it is a very ugly truth, and it pains me to admit it, but `when I want to do good, evil is right there with me' (Rom. 7:21)." [p. 65] They also give a number of examples that show where they blew it. This communicates not only humility, but also a sense that there's a bit of a journey involved. Helping the needy will never become neat, clean and orderly.

This book is highly biblical, both in its use of Scripture for application as well as in developing a theory of poverty that serves as the framework. You won't be able to get past a few pages at any point in the book without being confronted by biblical truth (and a helpful reference). And it does not do what many books on this subject do, namely, present steps and practices for alleviating poverty dissected from the Bible as the source of these truths or from the Holy Spirit as the source of divine power. Rather, the authors continually remind you of the authority of Scripture and our dependency on the Holy Spirit for power and guidance in the journey. One good example is early in the book, as the authors lay the groundwork for the importance of relationships in assisting the poor and sick. They take the reader back to the relationship in the Godhead, the Trinity. And from there they expand and explain how ministry flows through relationships. The poor are not going to be helped, without hurting them, if we just conduct drive-by ministry.

This book is also highly practical. The authors not only explain best practices and steps to take, but they give examples of what they might look like. And they also offer gracious critiques of benevolent practices that many of us have followed. The strange thing is that while reading many of the critiques, the thought ran through my head, "That always seemed a little unwise to me." You'll finish with not just new techniques, but will actually have an understanding of why some things work and some don't.

Many in the church will want to read this because of their local outreach. But this book is just as important for global outreach. In my job, I am continually laboring to help churches understand the importance of their short-term trips not becoming drive-by (or fly-by) ministries. Feeding the poor is wonderful. Caring for the orphan is beautiful. Both are biblical. But to be the best these ministries can be, both need to be in the context (connected to) a sustainable ministry. Biblically, you can't escape the fact that this is the church. Ministries that are conducted apart from the church die when their leadership dies (or moves, or changes strategies, or gets new vision, etc...). They are simply not sustainable. But when ministry is conducted in and through the church, there is lasting fruit. New believers are folded into that work. And when the US worker (or partnering church) leaves, the church will continue the ministry.

I don't get to read a ton of books, but this is one that has so impacted my thinking and stirred my heart, that I am encouraging everyone to read it. It's one of those books. I've got a stack of copies with me for my next journey to share with folks. I think it will disturb you too, in the best way possible.

an informed and thoughtful approach to poverty alleviation

This is a concise, theologically informed, ground-tested and provocative book on helping the poor - not for the faint of heart! Those who are gungho about mission and going out there to 'save the world' might have to plod patiently through this short but discomforting book without throwing our hands up halfway in despair about what exactly one can do for the poor without hurting them and ourselves. In the last decade or so, Brian Fikkert points out that there has been an explosion of 'short-term mission trips' (STMs) from churches in North America, investing tons of dollars into sending members for a two-week assignment in the developing nations. His hard-nosed critique provides a cautionary note beyond the surface hypes and reports of 'life-changing experiences' that commonly surround STM advertisements. As one who has participated in a few of such trips, I have learned much from his critique and am challenged to reflect on ways we might have unknowingly caused more harm than good in our eagerness to step in and help - that ends up encouraging dependency, deepening the sense of inferior-superior complex between the poor and the non-poor, crippling local initiatives, etc. Through all these, the advice that 'we do not do for people what they can do for themselves' serves as a poignant reminder.

I am glad that his thinking while practical and economically informed ultimately derives its roots from the biblical concept of what constitutes poverty. His working definition of poverty goes beyond the common reductionistic one that is measured primarily in terms of material resources. He proposes a relational, rather than material, understanding of poverty as one that has to do with the dislocation of one's foundational relationships with God, self, others and the rest of creation. Helping the poor thus means addressing these four foundational relationships and helping one to see oneself as God's image-bearer, a person of worth, a member of the human family and steward of creation. This strikes hard at the core aetiology of poverty, namely broken relationships. Hence, he writes:

'Poverty is rooted in broken relationships, so the solution to poverty is rooted in the power of Jesus' death and resurrection to put all things into right relationships again.' (page 77)

'Our relationship with the materially poor should be one in which we recognize that both of us are broken and that both of us need the blessing of reconciliation. Our perspective should be less about how we are going to fix the materially poor and more about how we can walk together, asking God to fix both of us.' (page 76)

He devotes the second half of the book exploring what a more theologically balanced and holistic approach to helping the poorer community looks like. The categorization of the various levels of intervention into relief, rehabilitation and development is helpful in clarifying our thinking about the problem we intend to address as well as the desired outcome. The suggestions for a more collaborative rather than paternalistic, asset-based than need-based, locally-initiated and sustained (ie. by the local church and community) than foreigner-run efforts, long-range mission work than short-term trips (though these have their place when properly contextualized) are spot-on. The practical strategies of 'business as missions' and 'micro-financing' schemes are also discussed as helpful alternatives, though these schemes are not without their pitfalls too.

However, if I could imagine one possible unintended ill-effect reading this book might have on the readers, it would be that of being paralyzed by over-analysis. As the whole exercise of going out of one's comfort zone to reach out to others is fraught with much inhibitions, resistance and rationalizations to begin with, this book certainly does not make it easier. That being said, this book is full of hard truths and practical wisdom one ignores at perils to himself and others.

On the whole, it provides much food for thought and some seed ideas on how to explore a more holistic way of reaching out to the poor overseas and in our own backyard. It also puts a reality check on our possibly misguided motives that often accompany our noble desires to help. Hard-nosed, intelligent and eye-opening, Fikkert's book is a huge pay-off for anyone who will persevere in the challenging task of poverty alleviation with greater discernment and much humility.

If you've ever thought, "I want to help but I don't know how..."

If you've ever thought, "I want to help but I don't know how," then buy this book and read it right now. It is practical, encouraging, and full of ideas you've never heard before. Just last night a fire in my town displaced 200 residents from low-income housing. Because of this book, I now have a life-giving framework for thinking through how to help them.

My only caution is that you may get bogged down in some of the early "theory" chapters and decide that this book is not for you. This would be a huge mistake because in later chapters you get to see the theory in action. And in the long run, the theory is what you will remember and apply to your life. Keep reading, keep underlining, and keep praying. This book will bless your life.

Primal Fat Burner INTRODUCTION
In my first book, Primal Body, Primal Mind, I described how the primal lifestyle can lead to optimal health and longevity. In the seven years since its first publication, that book has reached more people than I could have ever imagined, many of whom have applied its principles and who have written me to say that their health and well-being improved significantly after changing what they eat. Many people asked that I put together a more structured eating plan along with additional information, recipes, and resources for primal eating. Primal Fat Burner does just that. When this is explained, what was once mysterious starts to become commonsense.

Over the fifteen or so years that I have followed a primal fat-burning protocol myself, I’ve worked with and counseled a remarkably diverse client population. At one end of the spectrum are those battling significant weight issues or serious ailments, from type 2 diabetes to early onset dementia. Often, the pain of the solutions they’ve been offered by medicine and mainstream nutrition exceeds the pain of the problem, so they come to primal fat burning in order to take things into their own hands. In the middle of the spectrum are women and men approaching middle age, or sometimes advanced age, who look healthy but who have discovered that they have underlying, unhealthy, and elevated blood sugar levels and other troubling blood test markers. They have been following seemingly balanced, carb-friendly ways of eating that have been invisibly ravaging their physiology—even though they still fit into their jeans.

At the far other end of the spectrum is a different crowd: people who are consciously eating what they consider to be a “paleo” diet (yes, I said “consider to be”—more on that later) but who have not gotten the results they are seeking; primal eaters who have drifted slowly from their low-carbohydrate goals and need help (or a swift kick in the pants) to reboot their program and to focus and dial in on their efforts; and elite or endurance athletes who are harnessing the energy from dietary fats to powerfully boost their performance.

If you’ve picked up this book piqued by the idea of becoming a primal fat burner, chances are you fall somewhere on this arc. You might have long struggled with diets that don’t work, or despaired at ever achieving a lean physique. Like me, you might have a deeply personal experience with depression, anxiety, or low energy. Or maybe you are watching others in your family suffer from health issues you know to be genetic, and you want to do anything you can to avoid those diseases yourself. If this is “civilized,” they are saying, they’d rather be primal!
For the Love of Fat
Fat has recently become the darling of the health world. In numerous peer-reviewed studies scientists are exonerating fat for health crimes it didn’t commit. For fifty years, fat was vilified by an aggressive anti-fat campaign, which shunted it out of its rightful place on our plate to make way for excesses of carbohydrates.

While I am glad that fat has finally won some redemption, its acceptance has been a little begrudging and timid. Most experts are all open arms when it comes to fat-rich, plant-based foods. And they’re pretty friendly with fish. They suggest modest little drizzles of this and splashes of this and that—and a quarter of an avocado, if you please.

As for me, please pass the lard. I wrote Primal Fat Burner to the beat of a much louder drum and with the intention of blazing a bolder path. This book is based on the fundamental scientific understanding that all fats, especially fats from healthy animal sources and unrefined tropical oils, are paramount to the functioning of our physiology and to our robust health. Shifting to an effective and well-adapted fat-burning metabolism takes between three and six weeks for most people. When you are successfully using the energy of fat for fuel, you are in what I call a state of effective ketogenic adaptation (EKA). Completely safe. A fat-based ketogenic diet based on the Primal Fat Burner Plan is safe for almost everyone—with some possible exceptions, which I will explain in detail. You’ll discover a new relationship with farmers and other sources of health-giving food. Most important, your relationship to food and eating will become clearer, healthier, and more resilient. It is a far saner, happier way to be.

Some of the information that follows might seem radical at first. Stay with me: you will see that this approach to caring for your health is in fact quite rational. Primal Fat Burner is based on a deep understanding of our ancestral origins. It is a foundational way of eating with an unshakable basis in evolutionary science. Its primary principle is this: If your body could choose its fuel, it would choose fat.

Though we have been conditioned to believe that we are designed to use glucose as our primary fuel, this is not exactly correct. The human glucose metabolism evolved to deliver short-term energy. Used in sustained or excessive ways, as occurs when you eat a carbohydrate-laden diet (and also one that contains too much protein), sugars damage cells. In our twenty-first-century society, with our obsession with instant gratification, this can sound shockingly rigorous. Yes, it requires a choice and a change. But that choice becomes self-reinforcing as you feel more energy, more clarity, and greater self-empowerment by the day as you throw off a dependency that was not doing you any favors. And when you choose to do this, your blood test results improve as well. If the thought of going low-carb strikes dread in your heart (and taste buds), know that anticipation is much worse than reality. You’ll discover that the satiating qualities of good fats in each meal have an extraordinary power to quiet cravings for sugars.

In fact, if you asked your body, it would tell you that it prefers ketones far more than glucose, because the fuel ketones deliver is steady and reliable—no spikes and crashes. Your body would tell you that it needs an abundance of quality fat to get critical micronutrients that its cells require for proper functioning. Oh, and it would tell you that eating fat does not make you fat—if done wisely, that is, with carbohydrates minimized. Two decades of clinical experience have shown me that a properly fed body can usually and almost effortlessly drop extra weight.

In the chapters to come, you’ll find that there is a unique aspect to the primal fat-burning approach that makes it distinct from variations of paleo or primal nutritional advice you may already know. Eating the foods that our ancestors relied on as the most consistent available sources is just the starting point. The Primal Fat Burner Plan also assesses these original foods according to human longevity science to measure how optimally they fit our needs in the uniquely challenging world we live in today. For instance, we know that the high amounts of protein that our ancestors tolerated—perhaps thanks to their robust genome—are not suitable for us today. The subtitle of Primal Fat Burner is spot on, applying the content of this book can literally save your life!

Some years ago in support of my husband’s then high cholesterol, I put my family on a low-fat/low cholesterol diet. I bought a book by the American Heart Association and followed that. Always fairly healthy previously, I begun to have a number of health issues slowly appear from non-stop heart palpitations and hormonal fluctuations to anxiety, depression, and extreme insomnia. My youngest son began to have extreme behavioral issues and problems with self-regulation and then finally, severe depression in 3rd grade. Making a long story short, much of what I learned from Nora’s first book, Primal Body Primal Mind, helped transform my life and that of my son’s. Now, six years later for me, and 5 for my son, our lives continue to be exponentially better and we are no longer on medications (the meds have been gone for years too). In Primal Fat Burner, I especially resonate with the chapter, Think Fat as I am quite certain our brains were inflamed and starved of fat and while my son was healing, I saw a direct correlation with his behavior and the balance of fat and starchy carbohydrates. I was amazed at the effect of increasing butter and decreasing starchy carbs. We were shocked at his regression when he ate gluten (after a good amount of healing, he no longer has such an extreme reaction when he is exposed, but we do not have gluten in our house and he brings a nutrient dense lunch to school). As a nutritional therapy practitioner now (I was inspired to back to school so I could teach this to others!), I really appreciate the chapters, “A Field Guide to Fat-Soluble Nutrients” and “Primal Fat Burning May Help Prevent and Alleviate Disease.” Personally for me, the dietary approach that Nora presents in Primal Fat Burner has helped me maintain a lean body after menopause and also has helped me pretty much avoid all the pesky modern-day menopausal symptoms that are incorrectly referred to as normal. I’m 54 and as of this writing have no aches or pains or no known health problems. I am full of energy and feel much more vibrant than I did when I was younger. I work extremely hard too! I read this book front to back in a day. It's that well written, and although I read a lot about primal nutrition, I learned more in this book than all the other books combined. I have been on the plan since I started reading it, and have lost 4 lbs in 4 days and I feel fabulous already. I'm surprised because the book mentions that you'll be tired for the first two to three weeks but I feel better than I did before. I look forward to the progression and process ahead. Hi, My diet was all over the food spectrum; heavy on the sugar, sodas, cookies ; you know the usual American diet. This has been my diet for the last 70 years. Not to say that I did not try to eat healthy; I would do well for a while than fall off and on to my old habits. I was blessed with a body that managed to keep me healthy through all this. I read your book in one day. I have your other book primal body primal mind. This recent book took me over the edge. I realized what a truly miraculous body we are given; and with all the abuse we give it our body tries so hard to keep us healthy. With all the other contrarian diets out their; I was becoming confused. Without going in to the usual hair splitting that goes on with this issue.
This book made sense to me that it is never to late to make life style changes and our body reacts with amazing results. No more dizzy walks with my dog, joint pain, head ache. I try not to take pharmaceutical drugs. I am not against them; they have there place; but we are over the top on the use of these meds. We all know what is out there; the good and the bad. Sorting it all out has been a journey that never ends. Your book has shed a bright light on this on going debate. I plan to follow this way of eating. the road a head look healthier. Thank you so much for all your work on this subject that is so important to so many.
