JEANNE MARTINET is the author of eight books, including The Art of Mingling, which has sold more than 150,000 copies and been published in ten countries. She has been featured in such publications as The New York Times, Salon, The Boston Globe, Glamour and The Washington Post. This Is How You Work a Room

This is the most wonderful book, really something I've needed for years. Being an only child, I tried always to hide in the background, lost my breath in a crowd, and most certainly had no idea how to work a room. I didn't know that skill existed. All I knew was that some people could do it, but not me. Jeanne Martinet explains it all, with very helpful tips and turns of phrase, behaviors that draw people in, and it's a game really, something you can master. Actually it's quite fun, and I've practiced literally whole chapters out of the book to get it right. After all though, there's no right to it, just the knowledge that everyone else is as nervous as you are, and that people really do want to make friends. She also has great suggestions on texting versus email, versus a real, handwritten note––which one is most appropriate under which circumstances. Hers is a sophisticated take on how communication works in our talk driven world. I should add that Martinet is a really funny woman, so those childhood fears of mine began to seem just plain silly, worst than that, irrelevant. The very best thing about the book is that at its heart is a true belief in person-to-person fun and laughter and mutual respect.

Old friend is still funny and now an even better friend

Took a look in a bookstore just to see what had changed from original edition -- I bought the copy years ago and found Martinet funny and incredibly helpful. Bought the new edition (and have now bought two gift copies). Still a fun read, and I have already used two of the new techniques (anyway, I think they're new) to get myself out of one uncomfortable situation and work my way into another (very comfortable) other situation.

Jeanne Martinet takes the fear out of the process of talking to strangers!

This book helped me a lot. I didn't like all of the techniques, but most of them were very useful and some truly helpful. The Art of Mingling taught me to get over my anxiety/fear about talking to people in social situations. Simple concepts like "the Buddy System" work (at least for me!). I can now enter room full of strangers and not want to rush out of there as quickly as possible. I can now actually have fun in such situations. Quite a contrast to my life before reading this book!

John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton, 1st Baron Acton, KCVO, DL (10 January 1834 – 19 June 1902)—known as Sir John Dalberg-Acton, 8th Bt from 1837 to 1869 and usually referred to simply as Lord Acton—was an English Catholic historian, politician, and writer. He was the only son of Sir Ferdinand Dalberg-Acton, 7th Baronet and a grandson of the Neapolitan admiral Sir John Acton, 6th Baronet. He is perhaps best known for the remark, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men. Lord Acton (1834-1902) was one of the great historians of the Victorian period and one of the greatest classical liberal historians of all time. His theme was “the history of liberty” and even though he was never able to complete his magnum opus of that name he did write numerous essays, book reviews, and lectures. He also was the inspiration behind the multi-volume Cambridge Modern History.

Absolute excellence

Lord John Acton (1834-1902) is now chiefly remembered for his axiom, "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." However, Acton was a historian of international repute, whose championship of freedom of conscience caused his near excommunication over the adoption of the principle of Papal Infallibility in 1870.

Lord Acton did not publish a book during his lifetime, but in 1895 he was made Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University, where he made a number of astounding lectures. In 1906, a number of his lectures were compiled into book form; the result is this book, Lectures of Modern History. Beginning with his inaugural lecture in 1895, On the Study of History, the book then launches into a history of Europe and European thought from 1500 to 1787 and the American Constitutional Convention.

This book has been described as the History of Liberty, but it is more than that. Delivered with power and passion, it is almost a religious tract of liberty. I found the dialogue to be gripping (a word I don't often apply to non-fiction) and informative. I did not expect much from such an old work, but quite pleasantly surprised. With this work I now see that Lord Acton's reputation was very well deserved. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

Best Christmas Music Book

This is the 4th one I've bought -- years ago I heard the Christmas Revels CD and was hooked on this wonderful idea of a community Christmas performance with everything from singing children to amateur tuba players, and much rousing, beautiful, and historic music and poems. Now I have all the Revels CDs and songbooks, and I keep giving them as gifts. We sing from it, the piano accompaniment is about medium difficulty, and all the words are there, too. Check out the gorgeous mysterious pagan imagery of The Gower Wassail! We've done it in procession, holding candles, like the pilgrims (or Wise Men) singing the story. Truly wonderful idea, and a grand book.

Good Music

I purchased this title because I'm interested in starting a Revels-type event in my home area. The Revels Songbook includes many great songs that I am eager to use. I wish there were more specific ideas in the book for how to incorporate other elements like dance - but the book made no claims about anything but songs, so I can't say I was misled. It's definitely worth the price for the songs.

Adequate production values and a serviceable reading by James Naughton cannot save this audiobook from a truly awful story that tries to pass off a rightist political manifesto with Fascist underpinnings as an entertaining thriller. The silly plot focuses on our hero, a macho U.S. Congressman, who punches out the National Security Advisor in the President's presence, spouts that slain U.S. Congressmen got what they deserved, calls Congressmen who oppose his agenda "pansies," and, finally, joins a plot to kill another Fed with assassins who just happen to include an old Marine buddy and the Congressman's own grandfather. The assassins are all just good Americans, demanding at one point that the President sponsor a crime bill, of all things, or else! An underwhelming first technothrilleroriginally self-published. ``One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter,'' says Michael O'Rourke to his girlfriend, thus justifying the triple murder of a US senator and a pair of congressmen. They didn't deserve to live, he further insists, guilty as they were of mismanaging their country's business. In fact, virtually all politicians--Republicans and Democrats alike--are similarly guilty. Still, the assassinations are meant not merely as punishment but as a warning. Politicians had better shape up, be upright, set aside partisanship, and balance the budget. Or else. Young Michael, the hero of Flynn's dismal fable, is himself a congressman--the exception that proves the rule. He's sore at his government and has his reasons. His parents were killed in an automobile accident; the driver of the other car, it turned out, was a drunk, a repeat offender, who should have been off the streets, in jail. Due to the aforementioned mismanagement, however, the government can't build enough prisons. Nor is this mismanagement accidental; rather, its the inevitable result of self-serving cabals and wicked conspiracies. And as a variety of the aforesaid cabals maneuver to stop the terrorists, Michael finds himself caught squarely in the middle, very much on his own. While there are conspiracies galore here, much of the novel has an undercrafted feel to it: one-dimensional types, clumsy, often careless writing. (Flynn's heroine has ``big brown eyes''; a ``freedom fighter'' has ``bright blue eyes''--information delivered frequently, each time as if newly minted.) At length, the cabal is thwarted, the once misunderstood terrorist vindicated. ``You're not going to believe what's on this,'' Michael says, handing over the tape that reveals the depth of the conspiracy. This book is very good by at least one reason, which is well known to the author:"...I tried to derive everything from Maxwell's equations" - everybody try, but only few can. The complicated knot of reciprocity, power conservation and self-adjointness of operators is investigated here for wide variety of modern physical applications. Excellent book.

About the Author
Edmond Caldwell got a literature PhD from Tufts University and then decided he would prefer not to. Since then his fiction has appeared in *West Wind Review*, *Mad Hatters' Review*, *Harp & Altar*, *Acappella Zoo*, *Pear Noir!*, *Lamination Colony*, *Prick of the Spindle*, *DIAGRAM*, *Juked*, and elsewhere. He has been twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and his short play, *The Liquidation of the Cohn Estate*, was produced in the 2009 Boston Theater Marathon. *Human Wishes / Enemy Combatant* (Say It With Stones, 2012) is his first published novel. He lives in Newton, Massachusetts.

Through this book, Mr. Caldwell has created a new type of fiction. His sprawling but interconnected series of stories is full of literary rebellion. The reader is tossed from suspenseful middle-eastern intrigue to a spontaneously obscene Samuel Beckett script. This is the fiction of Aug� and Baudrillard's ilk, at turns blindingly self-aware or blissfully hyperreal. By the end of the book, one imagines the author gleefully stomping over the ruins of a long-forgotten fourth wall; intent, of course, on dying with his boots on.

In her newest book, Schlessinger (10 Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives) relies upon her experience in private practice, radio and letters she received from men and women in tackling the issue of women who mistreat their men and suffer the consequences of unhappiness. The women who criticize their husbands in the stories that Schlessinger relates are depressed in their marriages and feel little love from their husbands. Unabashedly asserting that man is a "very simple creature," who needs only "direct communication, respect, appreciation, food, and good loving'" to respond with devotion, compassion and love, this controversial marriage and family therapist claims that every woman can achieve a deeply satisfying marriage if she adheres to certain fundamentals men require. Preparing dinner, caring for the children without complaint, greeting her husband with a kiss and engaging in sexual intimacy instead of "tearing down a husband's necessary sense of strength and importance" can result in the harmonious marriage women crave. While many of her listeners and readers claim her unequivocal advice has salvaged teetering marriages and improved marital harmony, others perceive Schlessinger as a throwback to what many see as years of female oppression in the home.

Dr. Laura gets back into the battle of the sexes in this new offering, which will bring Marabel Morgan's Total Woman (1975) to the minds of readers of a certain age. Schlessinger doesn't advise women to greet their husband in saran wrap, as Morgan did, but she does tell women to shape up, literally and figuratively. Women need to understand that men are sensitive creatures who want to protect and cherish their wives. Is it any wonder that marriages go bad when churlish female spouses withdraw their affection, make unreasonable demands, and don't understand the male nature? In point of fact, there is nothing wrong with (or revolutionary about) Schlessinger's core point: be nicer and more nurturing to your spouse, and he will be nicer to you. But she beats her message to death, resorting to wild generalizations; repeating ideas, thoughts, and phrases ad infinitum; and bolstering her arguments with endless examples from callers and fax writers who are all making mistakes until shown the light. Helped my marriage.

I think all married women need to read this, especially independent women like myself. I personally am a recovering feminist and this book has helped my marriage tremendously and has reshaped some of my beliefs. My husband thinks I'm pretty great because I never exploit his vulnerabilities, even in anger. I don't nag, and I recognize that he needs physical affection and affirmation to feel loved. He's my hero, and he treats me like his queen.

Basic instructions for a happier marriage

If you are open to improving your marriage and understanding your spouse, read this book. While many will see the advice as old fashioned and possibly sexist, the principles behind it have helped many people save their relationships. We should all be open to doing whatever it takes to make our marriages strong. And if you are in it to win it, the book explains how your pride must die in order for your marriage to win.

Honoring and Respecting Your Husband is the Key

Dr Laura's book is sure to be controversial but for wives who are willing to do whatever it takes to make their marriages work, this book has the answers. Dr Laura tells it as it is as she explains a wife holds the keys to making her husband happy and her marriage successful if she will honor and respect her husband and give him attention and affection.
My husband gave me this book last week because he knew I had started reading books on how to be a better wife and I was already a fan of Dr Laura's books. I imagine that if a wife was a feminist or not ready to make sacrifices for her husband then giving her this book would not help. I recently gave up my business to concentrate on my family and was primed for what this book had to teach.
Men who read this will likely get their feelings validated. Some might possibly be insulted though by Dr Laura's assertion, "Men are borne of women and spend the rest of their lives yearning for a woman's acceptance and approval...men admittedly are putty in the hands of a woman they love. Give him direct communication, respect, appreciation, food and good lovin', and he'll do just about anything you wish...You basic male is a decent creature with simple desires: to be his wife's hero, to be his wife's dream lover, to be the protector and provider for his family, to be respected, admired and apprecaited. Men live to make their women happy.
Though Dr Laura is Jewish, "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" makes many the same points as conservative Christian marriage books such as "Liberated Through Submission", "Finding the Hero in Your Husband", "Joy of a Promise Kept", "His Needs, Her Needs" and the secular book "The Surrendered Wife".
The body of book is about 1/3 quotes from radio conversations with listeners and emails that Dr Laura has gotten. The heartfelt quotes from husbands drive home the points made. Dr Laura teaches that a good wife with her actions makes her husband the #1 priority in her life, clearly before both her job, parents, friends and even children. She tells women not to nag or mother this husbands because "If a man can't find peace in his own home, where he should be able to feel relaxed, accepted, loved, and content, he beings to hate coming home"
Dr Laura teaches that feminism has lied in claiming "men will oppress; they are the enemy; do not submit; terminate or donate." She condems the feminist movement "which supports personal success, acquisition, accomplishment amd power...over love, marriage and family."
I've read several criticisms of Dr Laura's position that it is a wife needs to meet her husband's sexual needs even when she's not in the mood. Dr Laura compares it to how irresponsible it would be for a husband to not go to work just because he's too tired or doesn't feel like it. If a wife still doesn't understand the reason behind her obligation, there are other books that cover this issue more thoroughly such as "Understanding the Purpose and Power of a Woman", "Making Sense Of The Men In Your Life" and "Sacred Sex: A Spiritual Celebration of Oneness in Marriage".
This is not a book for wives whose husbands are abusive but if you have a decent, hardworking husband husband and are willing to be unselfish and honor your marriage vows, "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" will motivate you to be a great wife.
