Grade 5-8-An outstanding collective biography of women and girls who changed the world with their inventions. Thimmesh surveys unique and creative ideas that were both borne of necessity or were simply a product of ingenuity and hard work. Included are Bette Nesmith Graham, who invented Liquid Paper, known more commonly as "white-out," and Ann Moore, who emulated the way African mothers carried their babies to create the Snugli. While working for NASA, Jeanne Lee Crews invented the "space bumper" that protects spacecraft and astronauts. The last few individuals highlighted utilized their creativity at a fairly young age. Becky Schroeder was 10 when she invented Glo-sheet paper, which enables people to write in the dark. She became the youngest female to receive a U.S. patent. The book also encourages young women to start inventing themselves and offers a list of organizations with postal and Internet addresses to help them get started. Colorful collage artwork shows the women and their creations and adds vibrancy and lightness to the text.

There's no organization to speak of, neither chronological nor alphabetical. However, this very attractive, informative book will find an audience among browsers and report writers alike. Ten women and two girls are given a few pages each. Included are Mary Anderson, who invented the windshield wiper (after she was told it wouldn't work); Ruth Wakefield, who, by throwing chunks of chocolate in her cookie batter, gave Toll House cookies to the world; and young Becky Schroeder, who invented Glo-paper because she wanted to write in the dark. The text is written in a fresh, breezy manner, but it is the artwork that is really outstanding. Melissa Sweet's mixed-media collages almost jump off the pages. For instance, the chocolate-chip cookie recipe is handwritten on a card, which sits on the page of an old cookbook, pasted to a wooden cutting board, set against an old-fashioned tablecloth. Watercolor portraits of the inventors also appear in each chapter, along with historical material or drawings of individual objects. The endpapers list women inventors, beginning at 3000 B.C., when silk was invented by a Chinese empress. The final section tells girls how to patent their inventions, and an informed bibliography and Web site list will help them do just that. Ilene Cooper

The cover is the coolest thing about this book.

I was really hoping there would be more pics in this book. I bought it for my 8yo niece, but will be giving it to my 11yo niece instead. The 8yo would be able to read it, but I don't think it would hold her attention enough. I mean, it's a book on inventions, I'd want to see pics of the inventors, their inventions, and any blue prints or anything, ya know?

My daughter liked this book and I really like the idea of having my young daughter reading about all of the brilliant women who have invented things over the years. About the Author
Charles W. Kegley is currently serving on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs. A past President of the International Studies Association, Kegley holds the title of Pearce Distinguished Professor of International Relations Emeritus at the University of South Carolina. A graduate of the American University (B.A.) and Syracuse University (Ph.D.) and a Pew Faculty Fellow at Harvard University, Kegley previously served on the faculty at Georgetown University, and has held visiting professorships at the University of Texas, Rutgers University, the People's University of China, and the Institute Universitaire de Hautes �tudes Internationales Et du Developpement in Geneva Switzerland. He is also a recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Foreign Policy Analysis Section of the International Studies Association. A founding partner of Kegley International, Inc. (a publishing, research, and consulting foundation), Kegley has authored more than 50 scholarly books (and over 100 articles in journals), including co-authorship with Gregory A. Raymond for Cengage of five editions of The Global Future, as well as with Eugene R. Wittkopf seven editions of American Foreign Policy: Pattern and Process.

Eugene R. Wittkopf was the R. Downs Poindexter Professor Emeritus at Louisiana State University (LSU). He also held appointments at the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina. He received his doctorate from The Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He published more than thirty books on international politics and foreign policy and several dozen refereed articles in professional journals and chapters in books. He held offices in professional associations and served on the editorial boards of numerous profession journals. In 2002 he received the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Foreign Policy Section of the International Studies Association. Earlier, Professor Wittkopf was named the 1996 Distinguished Research Master of Arts, Humanities, and Social Studies at Louisiana State University. This is the highest award given by the LSU in recognition of faculty contributions to research and scholarship.

Memorable Textbook

I read an earlier paperback edition of this textbook for my class in Intl. Relations at Northwestern University in 1987. Somehow it was misplaced since then, but I never forgot it. My 15 year old son has expressed an interest in learning more about the world than what he is fed in school, so I ordered a new copy, and now he's reading it. The book covers all aspects of the post WWII world order, which still governs most of what takes place today.

My only complaint about this text, and why I did not give it five stars, is that it seems to be a bit idealistic about what can be done to solve the world's problems. As a student, I actually believed that diplomacy, the UN, other NGO's etc. could substantially change the tendency toward using violence to solve disputes. And that reducing north-south inequality was an important key to this. East-west tensions were supposed to be reduced by negotiation. While that has been true to a small degree, the past 20 years have been shaped by nations acting in their own economic and military self-interest and a sharp rise in sectarian violence. And the cold war was won by the West economically, not by some negotiated settlement with communism. The end of the cold war also unleashed dozens of formerly quiescent nationalist movements.

I don't think Kegley and Wittkopf address these issues adequately. They don't take into account basic human nature and historic inevitability of conflict. Also, the push for impossible north-south equality and first world guilt is annoying. Trade is far better than aid. Many many more countries in the south are moving from dependency to industrialization, reducing the legacy of colonialism, and hence the importance of north-south wealth transfers.

Still, the ideals behind attempts to move toward a more benevolent world order are worth pursuing, and this book is an excellent introduction of those concepts. It's important to keep the authors' bias in mind, however, because history has not been kind to idealists. (Even in the fictional 24th century "United Federation of Planets," there are still wars to be fought.)

Regardless of these shortcomings, this book was a vital part of my education. Highly recommended.

Good introduction

I purchased this book because it was recommended for a test I was taking. I really liked it. This book does have a bit of a liberal bias, so beware if you are offended by that sort of thing. It didn't bother me. The reason I liked this book most is because it really kept the focus on WORLD politics, and emphasized how quickly each country affects others on areas of the environment, economics, and cultures. I feel like I understand my country's foreign policy and globalization much more than ever before.

Moving her young family to her husband's hometown in northern France, Karen Le Billon is prepared for some cultural adjustment but is surprised by the food education she and her family (at first unwillingly) receive. In contrast to her daughters, French children feed themselves neatly and happily—eating everything from beets to broccoli, salad to spinach, mussels to muesli. The family's food habits soon come under scrutiny, as Karen is lectured for slipping her fussing toddler a snack—"a recipe for obesity!"—and forbidden from packing her older daughter a lunch in lieu of the elaborate school meal.

The family soon begins to see the wisdom in the "food rules" that help the French foster healthy eating habits and good manners—from the rigid "no snacking" rule to commonsense food routines that we used to share but have somehow forgotten. About the Author

Karen Bakker Le Billon is a professor at the University of British Columbia, and was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2011. She and her family divide their time between Canada and France. Her website was named a Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Blog of the Month.

A wonderful, eye-opening book

This book is a must-have for an American parent. We started out feeding our child homecooked, good meals, eating as a family, and limiting treats and snacks. Somewhere by age 4, she was eating mostly crackers of various types, cheese sticks, and other junk. Worse of all, the family dinner table had become a battleground. She would refuse just about anything except what was familiar and usually processed. It didn't help matters when our own family members, meaning well I'm sure, began filling our pantry with "good" food for her...microwaved processed meals. So long as it said "organic" or was somehow marketed as healthy, it was okay. It really wasn't.

Americans snack constantly. Most of their calories are from junk, "fake" food. Most restaurants are some variant of Fast Food (especially Chili's and Olive Garden types, that cook prepackaged meals passed off as real dishes), and they eat out a LOT! Kids are constantly walking around with some bag of something in their hands. Corporations have caught on and pacify parents with things like "Organic Fruit Rollups". And we have fallen for it hook, line, and sinker. Schools especially, even Pre-K, where the kids are fed Animal Crackers as a morning snack and corporate marketing tools are drilled into them.

We tried several books that typically resulted in bribery, punishment, reward, or becoming a line-cook and making separate meals for the kids. It seemed ridiculous because we were eating so much better than our own child. Other parents were of little help, because they all had the same problem with no solutions.

By instituting some of the rules outlined in this book, we've changed our household dramatically. We stopped the fighting. We cooked good meals and started eating together, more slowly, enjoying conversation. We eliminated snacks from our house. We encouraged her to try everything, but didn't force her to eat it (a "taste" was acceptable, it would reappear on her plate some other night). One snack a day, between lunch and dinner, and only fruit/yogurt/cheese/applesauce/etc. Desserts were for special meals and occasions (where it had previously been a reward for choking down a sliver of carrot). If she didn't eat, fine, the plate was taken away when the meal was over and she could wait until her next meal. No snacks! (Very quickly, she finally stormed into the kitchen, took back her plate and happily ate everything she had 20 minutes ago declared "yucky!") We started formal dinners once a week to have fun dressing up the table. She was encouraged to help with the cooking more. Eating is supposed to be FUN and enjoyable!

Finally, we changed ourselves. We took the time in the morning to make meals and eat together, as well as the evening dinner. We stopped letting ourselves get frustrated, because we knew that we weren't starving her (plenty of yummy food was being served), and eventually she would eat when she got hungry and realized that no, a cookie or box of crackers would never be coming.

I recommend this book to every parent.

In the process of changing our life...in a HUGE way!!!

My wife and I are big foodie type people. For the first year of our sons life, he ate whatever we put in front of him, which included things like: duck risotto, rattlesnake sausage, any veggie, etc. But after about 13 months, he became difficult. It was like a switch that turned off.

About the time he was turning two, we decided that we had enough with his fussiness. He was at the point that he would only eat processed garbage, and only then if it was covered in pesto. Not only that, it got worse in that he would often just lick the pesto off of something and then throw the remaining actual food on the floor! We could not tolerate this behavior and as such, we turned to this book.

I would generalize the central message of this book to the following:

-there needs to be rules regarding meal times, but they are never enforced in anger
-kids are allowed to be hungry...they'll quickly learn that starving themselves is not an option!
-everyone eats the same thing
-try to make meal time an enjoyable experience
-rules are flexible to your family lifestyle

So, we started giving these things a twirl in that we would only serve him what we were eating. Note that it took some consideration on our part as we couldn't just eat anything we wanted anymore. For example, we couldn't have crazy spicy food, or something he wasn't capable of consuming easily (i.e., soup because he wasn't particularly good with the spoon.) Anyway, the first week, he went to be hungry every night. That was hard. Also, we would always end dinner with fruit, which he loved, but we would never give him enough to fill up on. That was hard too, but starting the next week, he got the message, which is "you are no longer in control, and you will only get what we put on your plate." Also, he could no longer bank on snacking.

So, during the second week, he would start tasting stuff. Admittedly, he didn't always eat it, but the point was that he tried it, whereas beforehand, that was impossible. Now, we've realized some extra things that help in our particular situation, and as such, we made some minor adjustments. And while he is not eating perfectly yet (we've only been doing this for almost 4 weeks,) he usually will at least try something before deciding he doesn't like it. And that's also huge!

End result is that our lives are much less stressed. Dinner time was always a battle. That is mostly not the case anymore. First off, we don't need to think "what should we prepare him so that he'll eat?" We just give him what we're eating. That may seem like a small thing to some, but it's actually HUGE! One less thing to worry about!!!! Second, we don't fight with him...and as such, he's become easier going about meal time. Less stress for him, less stress for us. Third, he now sits at the table (we got rid of his high-chair) and he'll actually come to the table on his own when we announce that it's dinner time! Something that warms my heart.

So, while we are still a work in progress (and I reserve the right to update this post later on) he has progressed magnificently. Our only regret is that we didn't read this book earlier.

Fun and informative

I think this book could have a really positive impact on improving how we Americans, as well as other cultures, view food and eating. My kids are grown, but I wish I'd read this when they were little. I decided to read it based on my poor eating habits. I not only learned a lot, and have been inspired by it, but it was a very enjoyable read. Definitely keeps your interest. Thanks, Karen, for sharing this experience. Most of us will never live in France. :-)

This book has some useful information in it. It's different to many others because they actually did some research. However there are major sections missing including booth rental bthe problem with this sort if book is that they hire a writer who doesn't know the industry instead of a hairdresser who does. Average.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering a hair salon, or even if you own one and want to improve. It offers great, solid information that you can definitely use. It has quotes from successful salon owners too so you can learn from their success. I am an accountant and always looking for value and I would definitely say this is worth every penny!

Dominic has created a master manual for memory

This has to be the pinnacle of work for Dominic. He has distilled his ideas from numerous previous books, added excellent exercises and given you ways to actually use the tools in real life.

I have been drip-feeding my children ideas from this book and they are starting to see results in both memory and creativity by flexing the mind. Sure, not everyone wants to be a world champion but we all want better recall and grasp of the world around us.

Very well written Dominic demonstrates his sense of humour and is humble in describing his achievements stemming, by his own admission, from a poor academic start in life. If you liked "Moonwalking with Einstein" then this really gives you the toolkit to make it happen for you! Couple this learning with some of the great apps available for smart phones and you will develop a formidable memory in no time.

THESE BOOKS WILL GIVE YOU A BRILLIANT MEMORY - IF YOU STUDY AND LEARN THEM.
THE RESULTS WILL BE AMAZING! WORTH THE YEAR OF STUDY AT ABOUT 1 HOUR PER
DAY 4-5 DAYS PER WEEK PLUS USING THE TECHNIQUES IN EVERYDAY LIFE.

BY FAR THE BEST MEMORY IMPROVEMENT SYSTEM (THOUGH I SLIGHTLY PREFER DOMINIC'S "HOW TO DEVELOP A BRILLIANT MEMORY WEEK BY WEEK")

The "Dominic System" laid out in these pages is, for me, by far the most natural and user-friendly method of memorising or working with strings of numbers and letters because it is based upon:
1. people and actions, which are endlessly more interesting than the systems of, say, Tony Buzan or Dr Bruno Furst which are largely based upon objects;
2. an interchangeable number-letter code that couldn't be easier to pick up or refer back to as, again unlike the other much more confusing and working-against-oneself systems I am aware of it pretty much follows the order of first ten letters of the English alphabet
(for these two crucial reasons, my book MEMORY PALACE DEFINTIVE and all future ones I am working on are compatible with and expand upon Dominic's number-letter code and System. I also tout Dominic's earlier book HOW TO DEVELOP A BRILLIANT MEMORY WEEK BY WEEK as my standard text on memory improvement in my chapter on both this subject and developing fluid intelligence in the Pat Wyman-edited book AMAZING GRADES).

I slightly prefer HOW TO DEVELOP A BRILLIANT MEMORY WEEK BY WEEK over YOU CAN HAVE AN AMAZING MEMORY, which is still, for me, by far the standard in the field because it is both slightly more concisely focused (but still with sufficient examples for practice) on the various interlinked memory improvement techniques and covers a few more of them.
