Reason in a Dark Time: Why the Struggle Against Climate Change Failed -- and What It Means for Our Future, by Dale Jamieson

From the 1992 Rio Earth Summit to the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Conference there was a concerted international effort to stop climate change. Yet greenhouse gas emissions increased, atmospheric concentrations grew, and global warming became an observable fact of life.

In this book, philosopher Dale Jamieson explains what climate change is, why we have failed to stop it, and why it still matters what we do. Centered in philosophy, the volume also treats the scientific, historical, economic, and political dimensions of climate change. Our failure to prevent or even to respond significantly to climate change, Jamieson argues, reflects the impoverishment of our systems of practical reason, the paralysis of our politics, and the limits of our cognitive and affective capacities. The climate change that is underway is remaking the world in such a way that familiar comforts, places, and ways of life will disappear in years or decades rather than centuries.

Climate change also threatens our sense of meaning, since it is difficult to believe that our individual actions matter. The challenges that climate change presents go beyond the resources of common sense morality -- it can be hard to view such everyday acts as driving and flying as presenting moral problems. Yet there is much that we can do to slow climate change, to adapt to it and restore a sense of agency while living meaningful lives in a changing world.

From Booklist
If one listens to popularity-hungry politicians and optimistic environmentalists, there is still ample hope for humanity to halt global warming in its tracks. Yet a growing number of atmospheric scientists are saying it’s already too late and the real debate now is over how the earth’s denizens can adapt. Jamieson, an environmental studies and philosophy professor at New York University, falls squarely in the latter camp, pointing out that, despite a last-ditch, internationally attended Copenhagen Climate Conference in 2009, worldwide greenhouse-gas emissions have only increased. Since, in his view, catastrophic ecological damage is a foregone conclusion, Jamieson here narrows the issues down to moral and economic concerns. One of his key arguments involves getting us all to acknowledge both our personal responsibility in creating this global crisis and our collective ability to still make a difference. Although not intended as a rallying cry for arresting climate change, Jamieson’s work is nonetheless an invaluable contribution to the dialogue about how to minimize the inevitable social and environmental devastation that looms large in our future. --Carl Hays

Review

"Jamieson's ethical approach deserves serious consideration, especially since it manages to take our relationship with nature seriously while avoiding the debate about whether the value in nature is intrinsic or instrumental... wide-ranging and ambitious" --Journal of Applied Philosophy

"he has a gift for translating complexities into simple, often arresting terms, and is able to make even familiar material seem fresh...The result is a book that is uncommonly accessible to nonspecialists, and will resonate even among those working in the trenches of climate policy, for whom works of pure philosophy often seem somewhat beside the point...This is sound advice not only for economists but for anyone writing about climate change. Reason in a Dark Time succeeds so well because Jamieson, with very few exceptions, practices what he preaches." --Ethics and International Affairs

"A book that does justice to the full tragedy and weird comedy of climate change is Reason in a Dark Time, by the philosopher Dale Jamieson. Ordinarily, I avoid books on the subject, but a friend recommended it to me last summer, and I was intrigued by its subtitle, "Why the Struggle Against Climate Change Failed-And What It Means for Our Future"; by the word "failed" in particular, the past tense of it. I started reading and couldn't stop...I'd expected to be depressed by "Reason in a Dark Time" but I wasn't. Part of what's mesmerizing about climate change is its vastness across both space and time. Jamieson, by elucidating our past failures and casting doubt on whether we'll ever do any better, situates it within a humanely scaled context."
-- Jonathan Franzen in The New Yorker

"An invaluable contribution to the dialogue about how to minimize the inevitable social and environmental devastation that looms large in our future."
-- Booklist

"This book is a must read by all who wish to bring reason to the challenges [of climate change] we are going to face very soon, whether we want to or not..." --Green Energy Times

"Jamieson provides a wide-ranging account, looking at the lack of political incentives to act and at the influence of organised climate denial...Jamieson concludes with some observations about things we can definitely do for the better right away (abandon coal), and with shrewd reflections on living with the knowledge that we flunked the climate test." --Times Higher Education

"A highly informative, wise, and thought-provoking discussion of some of the greatest problems that humanity faces, and of some possible solutions."
--Derek Parfit, All Souls College, Oxford

"Dale Jamieson is a philosopher and a realist. He was been working on climate change for a quarter of a century, alongside both scientists and policy makers. He argues that we are heading down a dangerous road and will likely have to face a much more difficult world. But he also argues that there is so much we can do individually and collectively to make a difference, and warns that the best must not be the enemy of the good. This is a very thoughtful and valuable book and should be read by all those who would wish to bring reason to a defining challenge of our century."
--Professor Lord Nicholas Stern

"No one but Dale Jamieson could write an eminently readable book about climate change that ranges over the full sweep of the problem from the historical to the ethical, the scientific to the political. By placing this vexing issue into the broader context of the human condition, Jamieson guides the reader's mood from pessimism to optimism, and finally realism about our prospects."
--Michael Oppenheimer, Albert G. Milbank Professor of Geosciences and International Affairs, Princeton University

"Part requiem for our failed hopes and part vision for our uncertain future, this remarkably far-ranging work by the philosopher who has thought longest and hardest about climate change could inspire fruitfully radical reassessment of our attitudes toward the most far-reaching challenge of our lifetimes. The climate is changing -- can we?"
--Henry Shue, Centre for International Studies, University of Oxford

"Although Jamieson characterizes the Enlightenment faith in reason as a "dream," and recognizes that it is in particularly short supply in climate change policy, he is very much a man of the Enlightenment himself - hence his title, with its emphasis on reason, even in dark times, and his stated goal, which is to make readers think. Reason in a Dark Time succeeds admirably in this task. Although much of the ground Jamieson explores is well trodden, he has a gift for translating complexities into simple, often arresting terms, and is able to make even familiar material seem fresh." -- Ethics and International Affairs

"Forget learning about the science of climate change; read this book to learn about society and perhaps do a little bit of soul-searching. Summing Up: Highly recommended. " --CHOICE

"Reason in a Dark Time by Dale Jamieson (Oxford): precisely because it's the first book to be fully honest about climate change, it's the one book on the subject that stands a chance of not depressing you. It may even change your life." -- Jonathan Franzen, The Guardian, recommended as "Best Holiday Reads 2015"

Comprehensive overview
By Jenny B
Dale Jamieson coherently covers a lot of ground in this book and has many good footnotes. He explains the history of climate change politics and economic shortcomings well, but his consideration of the causes and of climate change philosophy differentiate it from others in the climate policy field.

I especially liked Jamieson's description of the role of science in US society. He notes the gulf in perspective between scientists and public policy makers caused by the requirements for "success" in their fields. An amusing anecdote about the Supreme Court case for the EPA's regulation of CO2 was also apt; Jamieson explains that Justice Scalia mixed up the words 'troposphere' and 'stratosphere'. After being corrected by a scientist, he replied, "Whatever. I'm not a scientist," to laughter among the "sympathetic" audience of lawyers and journalists (62). Jamieson considers how the audience would have taken a similar quip if it had been about a basis of economics or politics, such as "Supply and Demand. Whatever, I'm not an economist." He asserts that US society generally doesn't prioritize scientific bases, and our ignorance "can lead people to both overestimate what science can do and feel betrayed when it fails to live up to these pretensions" (63).

Two parts of the book stood out to me as having room for improvement. In his explanation of climate change philosophy and values, he focuses exclusively on human impacts for future generations and for people in developing countries. His being an environmental philosopher, I thought it was interesting that he never mentions philosophical ideas related to ecological and non-human impacts in the present and future. This significantly narrows his focus to human society, as may have been his preference. Jamieson also refers several times in the book to the "biggest problem" in addressing climate change: a psychological component. While he explains other factors in some depth, he addresses this in only two pages. Mentioning some of the research in environmental and climate change psychology and communication (Robert Gifford, Kari Norgaard, Susan Moser) could have significantly contributed to this section.

Jamieson concludes that we will continue to address climate change in a piecemeal and messy fashion. Overall, I think he does a great job in explaining many aspects of climate change with thought and depth.

Enlightenment ideals for a new age
By Ideophile
Jamieson points a critical eye toward where we find ourselves with respect to climate change, how we got here, and what we can do going forward. The basis of his thinking can be boiled down to this: human ethics, morality, and institutions were never designed to handle problems such as climate change where cause and effect are distributed across space, time, and actors. For example, it's really hard to think ethically when the impacts of decisions made today may be a thousand years in the future; it's really hard to feel morally culpable for turning up the thermostat even though collectively this may result in the suffering and/or death of uncountable people; and it sounds a bit off when our best economic models claim that European explorers got a raw deal when they bought Manhattan for $24. Human beings were built to react to cause and effect when and where they see it - so one of the key problems with climate change is that it's so hard to see the when and the where (let alone the who).

As far as presentation goes, the bulk of his book reflects on how we got here. Jamieson takes us through the early days of climate science, the recognition of climate change as a problem, and the institution of climate diplomacy. He discusses how climate diplomacy failed due to the disconnects between politics and science, the disconnects between public good and corporate good, etc. He also discusses the limitations of economics when applied to climate change, especially when it comes to valuing present and future lives. The takeaway is that since diplomacy and economics have failed to solve the climate change problem in the past we shouldn't expect them to be the solution going forward.

The next subjects he takes up are ethics and morality. As with diplomacy and economics, he discusses where human ethics and morality fall short when it comes to climate change. He surveys a variety of recent attempts at establishing a new ethics for climate change, but identifies a range of challenges that each must address before any of them can be considered coherent.

The last part of the book looks forward. Unfortunately, this is the shortest (and in my opinion the weakest) part of the book. The chapter titled "Living with Climate Change" is by far the shortest chapter in the book. Jamieson's reflections on measuring meaning in terms of activity (vs. results) and cultivating a respect for nature seem less convincing than any of his earlier arguments (even for someone like me who would emphasize the same). The final chapter provides a Confucian-like "rectification of names", a discussion on how future policy discussions may play out in terms of those names, and also introduces Jamieson's seven principles for the way forward. Readers with an activist bent may find this chapter useful in that it points out how people in climate change discussions often talk past each other by using the same names to mean different things as well as how the conversation will likely turn toward emphasizing "adaptation" and "geoengineering" now when in fact "abatement" and "mitigation" remain critical elements of any solution. His seven principles for the way forward, however, are similar in brevity to his earlier discussions of meaning and respect for nature - so while my previous education allows me to agree with each of his principles, they're not quite the arguments you might use to sway a fence sitter (let alone a staunch denier).

All in all, a great discussion on how we got to where we find ourselves with respect to climate change. The latter part of book that deals with the way forward, while a little weak, can itself be taken as outlining a way forward for further reading (as opposed to being a final word on the subject).

Reason in a Dark Time: Why the Struggle against Climate Change Failed—And What It Means for Our Future
By Dale Jamieson
ISBN: 978-0-19933-766-8 (Oxford University Press, 2014)

It's fairly easy to see that we have a serious climate problem on our planet. But what's not so easy to see is why we are not responding to this appropriately. Global climate change will undoubtedly affect the way we live and where we live. … And if we live. Yet our political systems are totally inadequate to take appropriate steps and to be truthful with us about this situation. This book goes deep into the psychological reasons this is so and why we still need to make a significant response to this problem. If you've ever wondered what you can do as an individual or why you should even try, this book is a must-read for you.

The Good Food Revolution: Growing Healthy Food, People, and Communities, by Will Allen

A pioneering urban farmer and MacArthur “Genius Award” winner points the way to building a new food system that can feed—and heal—broken communities.

The son of a sharecropper, Will Allen had no intention of ever becoming a farmer himself. But after years in professional basketball and as an executive for Kentucky Fried Chicken and Procter & Gamble, Allen cashed in his retirement fund for a two-acre plot a half mile away from Milwaukee’s largest public housing project. The area was a food desert with only convenience stores and fast-food restaurants to serve the needs of local residents.

In the face of financial challenges and daunting odds, Allen built the country’s preeminent urban farm—a food and educational center that now produces enough vegetables and fish year-round to feed thousands of people. Employing young people from the neighboring housing project and community, Growing Power has sought to prove that local food systems can help troubled youths, dismantle racism, create jobs, bring urban and rural communities closer together, and improve public health. Today, Allen’s organization helps develop community food systems across the country.

An eco-classic in the making, The Good Food Revolution is the story of Will’s personal journey, the lives he has touched, and a grassroots movement that is changing the way our nation eats.

Willie Mae Kenner

She held a one-way ticket.

In December of 1934, my mother, Willie Mae Kenner, stood in the waiting room for colored people at the train station in Batesburg, South Carolina. She was twenty-five years old. Her two young boys, my older brothers, were at her side. She was heading to Union Station in Washington, D.C. She was trying to escape our family’s long history in agriculture.

I imagine her on this day. Willie Mae was known to be beautiful and headstrong. Many local men had called her “fine”—she had strong legs, smooth skin, a round and lovely face, and thoughtful eyes. She also had dreams that were too big for her circumstances. She and her husband, and seven of her nine siblings, were sharecroppers: tenant farmers who gave up half of the crop they planted and harvested each season in exchange for the right to pick it. It was the only life that she had known.

My mother held different hopes in her heart, both for herself and her children. She had fought to obtain a teaching degree from Schofield Normal and Industrial School, a two-year college initially set up after the Civil War by Quakers, to educate free slaves. She wanted to be a teacher. Her family noticed that when she was required to pick cotton or asparagus, she did the work without complaint. Yet she wore a long, flowing dress on top of her work shirt and pants while in the fields. It was as if she wanted to find a way to give grace and dignity to work that often provided neither.

From the train station in Batesburg, Willie Mae was trying to escape asparagus and cotton. At the time, the South was still in the thrall of “Jim Crow”: the rigid set of laws set up after the Civil War to separate whites and blacks in almost every part of public life. The 1896 Supreme Court decision in Plessy v. Ferguson—allowing “separate but equal” facilities for black people—meant that my mother could not share the same train car with white passengers. She and her children could not even wait in the same area for the train to come. Her train car sat directly behind the coal car, where men shoveled the rocks into the roaring engine. The smoke of the engine blew through the car’s windows and seeped into her clothes. She and her two boys would need to use a bathroom marked not “Men” or “Women” but “C,” for “Colored.”

Her journey was to take her to the nation’s capital, where Willie Mae planned to reunite with her husband, James Kenner. His friends called him “Major,” for reasons I never understood. He had left South Carolina after falling into debt. During the Great Depression, the price for cotton had dropped to only 5 cents a pound— down from 35 cents only a decade earlier. Major had found himself owing more to his landowner at the end of the planting season than when he began it. Sharecropping had begun to feel like slavery under another name.

“There’s no money here,” he told my mother shortly before leaving.

Major found a small place to live in Ken Gar, an all-black neighborhood on the edge of Kensington, Maryland, ten miles from the White House. He sent word to my mother to come. Major was now building houses instead of planting crops. Willie Mae had never seen the place she was going to call home.

My mother left the South before I was born. I know from relatives that she decided against boarding her departing train at the nearest station, in Ridge Spring, likely out of concern that local people would talk about her. When I was growing up, she rarely spoke of her Southern past, as if it were a secret that was best not talked about in polite company. She told my brothers and me that she liked the taste of every vegetable except asparagus—she simply had picked too much of it.

I have wondered what passed through her mind when the train pulled out of Batesburg. As the locomotive edged north out of South Carolina, she would have seen from the windows the life she had known. She would have seen the long-leaf pine trees, the sandy soil, and the fields that yielded cotton and parsnips and cabbage and watermelon. She would have seen other sharecroppers at work, their clothing heavy with sweat.

Willie Mae knew how to sustain her family in South Carolina. She had learned from her mother how to bed sweet potatoes and garden peas and cabbage and onions in the early spring. When the full heat of summer came, she had learned how to plant turnips and eggplants and cucumbers and hot peppers and okra and cantaloupes. She had learned how to take all the parts of a hog that the men slaughtered and turn it into souse (a pickled hog’s head cheese), scrapple (a hog meatloaf), liver pudding, or a dish called “chitlin’ strut”—fried pig intestines. She had learned in the late autumn how to can peaches and sauerkraut and pecans and yams for the cold season.

She was leaving for a city where it was uncertain if any of the skills she had—or any of the dreams she harbored—would matter.

The Good Food Revolution has real "Growing Power"
By Lawgirlamy
The Good Food Revolution is the best book I've read in a long time. My interest in local and urban agriculture drew me to the book; the intimate stories of individuals and communities that frame that meta-narrative drew me into it. The book arrived on Wednesday. Despite an excessively busy schedule, I had completed it by early Saturday morning, often forgoing much-needed sleep because I simply could not put it down.

The rich and engaging stories of individuals and their relationships to one another through family, community, and politics are told through the lenses of race, economics, and, of course, agriculture, all woven together by Will Allen in a style that is at once eloquent and folksy; comprehensive and intimate. Through engaging vignettes, Will Allen's The Good Food Revolution provides glimpses into the history of this nation, with particular emphasis on the different experiences of people of different races. The story is deeply personal, yet told in a way that we can all feel like we are a part of it and of the future envisioned by Will Allen.

Will Allen shares stories of past and present racial inequality in a tone that is likely to draw people in, rather than make people feel either guilty or entitled. Unlike the judgmental and accusatory tone often found in such accounts, Mr. Allen's gentle and understanding tone allows him to capture the extreme difficulties faced by people of color without alienating others. By handling even the most shameful aspects of our nation's history with grace and tact, Mr. Allen was able to draw me into the stories without feeling like a would-be savior or presumed culprit for our divided history. Rather, I felt like an invited guest to our shared future.

Mr. Allen tells the story of environmental damage wrought by modern agricultural practices in much the same tone, with understanding towards those who are practicing out of ignorance - even admitting some of his own less-than-best practices over the years. This approach is far more likely to result in converts to his way of thinking than the acerbic, arrogant, and accusatory tone that often seem to underlie discussions of both agriculture and race these days.

Mr. Allen, who describes himself as a muscular 6'7", seems to have an awareness of the effectiveness of this approach:

I also recognized there was a power in bing both huge and polite; I invoked fear in people and allayed it at the same time. (p. 69).

By approaching the topic in this way, my eyes were opened to things I wasn't fully aware of before and I was very receptive to hearing it from him. For example, I'm a big proponent of the local food movement and of organic and sustainable agricultural practices. I believe that much of our public policy favors BigAg at the expense of the little guy. Mr. Allen showed me that many of those "little guys" are black farmers:

"For black farmers in the twentieth century who outlasted the upheaval of the Great Migration [northward], there were more subtle forces that drove them off their land. In 1982, the bipartisan U.S. Commission on Civil Rights issued a report called 'The Decline of Black Farming in America' that attempted to understand why black farmers were leaving the profession at a rate of two and a half times greater than that of whites. The committee found that one important reason was that black farmers were small farmers. . . . Almost all of the technological innovations that the United States government had subsidized over the previous decades, the authors acknowledged, were geared toward increasing the productivity of large farms -- and not to making small farms sustainable."

There's a lot packed into that quote, including public policy (subsidies), the dangers of over-efficiency in farming, and the racial disparities in loss of farming opportunities. Most importantly, it speaks to our united interest in supporting small, local farmers. Through this and similar sentiments scattered throughout the book, I discovered an unanticipated affinity with people of color, coming to the recognition that they feel even more acutely than others the effects of policies and procedures that are not helpful or sustainable for any of us. It educated me about the challenges facing urban farmers without shaming me for my prior ignorance.

This is also reflected in Mr. Allen's description of his intentional method of helping young people want to eat real food - not through lecturing them, but by allowing them to be part of the experience. In describing the findings of a study about young people and nutritional habits, Mr. Allen relates:

"The researchers found no significant difference a year later in the vegetable and fruit consumption of children without nutrition education and those who received nutrition classes. The students who received hands-on training in a garden, however, increased their fruit and vegetable intake by more than two servings a day. My own experience tells me that if we can expose young people more often to fresh, delicious food - and create positive emotions around those experiences - that we increase the chances that they will adopt more fresh food into their diet as they begin to make independent food choices later in life." (p. 161)

The Good Food Revolution frequently uses gardening and agriculture as a metaphor for life:

"My father taught me that the fate of a seed can be predicted by the health of the soil where it takes root. This is true of summer crops. It can be true, in another sense, of people. We all need a healthy environment and a community that lets us fulfill our potential." (p.63)

He later described vermiposting in similar terms:

"The worms also made me reflect again on what it took to improve the lives of people. You couldn't place folks in the middle of a blighted neighborhood -- without a strong family unit and without easy access to healthy food -- and expect them to thrive. If you could create an environment in which people felt secure and healthy, though, you could provide the possibility of a better life."

A counter-balance to this is the story of Karen Parker, who overcame significant obstacles to thrive in the urban agriculture environment. He summed up her experience using another metaphor:

"Sometimes on the sidewalks of Milwaukee, there will be a flower or a tall week sticking defiantly out of the tiniest crack in the concrete. I realize that human lives can be like that. People find a way to persist even when they are provided the narrowest opportunity."

Wisdom about the value of patience and adversity, among other things, are also woven throughout the book. In a chapter introduction entitled "Grit," Will compares humans to worms, which need to have *just the right amount* of hard material in their diet in order to break down compost, "Human beings need the right amount of grit: not too much, but not too little, either." (p. 207)

In addition to the broader philosophical themes, the book offers plenty of sound, practical advice for the would-be gardener, non-profit organization, or even small business start-up. For the gardener, there is specific information about the ratio of elements needed for good compost, specific measurements of Growing Power's aquaponics equipment, and descriptions of tehniques for planting, cultivating, and even preparing produce.

For the non-profit or for-profit business, the book includes a very transparent look at the thought processes that underlie the successes - and failures - that brought both Will Allen and Growing Power to where they are today. The book describes various challenges faced by Mr. Allen and the organization, and describes the problem-solving techniques used to over come them. One example is the description of how he and a number of other farmers at a local farmers market decided to organize themselves into a co-op after facing the prospect of being shut down due to city budget constraints.

The practical advice and philosophical themes work together to inspire the reader to live a fulfilling life by harnessing her unique gifts, talents, experiences, and passions into something meaningful. Mr. Allen doesn't sugar-coat the value or necessity of hard work and perseverance - it is detailed on every page. But, he also highlights the rewards that can come from working hard at a meaningful endeavor.

The book covers a lot of ground and tells the story of many people, but it is not the least bit disjointed. In fact, I would say that the integrated way the book was put together with diverse people, circumstances, and events, is a reflection of the type of community envisioned within its pages.

Ohio State Freshmen Book 2015
By Marjean M. Hull
My grandson will be starting his freshmen year at The Ohio State University in a few weeks. This book is required reading for all new students at all of their campuses. In September Will Allen is scheduled to give a presentation on the main campus that will be broadcast to the satellite as well. My daughter and I decided that we read this book too and I'm glad we did. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in the health of our country both physically and mentally.

not indifferent
By warren laroche
I thought I was going to learn about new ways to eat. Ellie Wiesel says the opposite of love is indifference. Will Allen is anything but indifferent. I'm sometimes in tears reading about how hard he and his family works to have his millions of employees, his worms, convert food waste into affordable nutrition for "his people". We don't share the same skin tone but I think of him as a brother.
He is leading us to a society where the food is not provided by an industry that is more interested in shelf life than providing nutrition. He is leading us back to a time when we ate what we grew and saved some for when we couldn't. I hope more people read his book and begin to plan for the revolution which the FDA isn't being paid to lead.

CONTINUED EXCELLENCE.
By Richard Slimowitz
EXCELLENCE CONTINUED. i have brought the past editions, and all proved invaluable for the
study of current oncology drugs. However, nothing is perfect, and there are some flaws that readers should
be aware of,. In this edition, PAGES 472-520 ARE PRINTED UP SIDE DOWN! YES, UP SIDE DOWN. I called the
publisher when I first received a copy in December, 2016. and reported the problem. Of course, I was
ignored. The information is correct but the PAGES ARE UP SIDE DOWN. Who knows? This edition might be
worth a collector's fee. Going forward, drugs should have costs listed. The PUBMED site, a government
site, can be used as reference to verify all drugs. The NCCN reference web site can be used to check
all use sequences. This book is essential for oncology professionals.

[ QUANTITATIVE RISK ASSESSMENT IN FIRE SAFETY ] , by Ramachandran Ga ( Author) 2011 [ Hardcover ], by G. Ramachandran

Fire safety regulations in many countries require Fire Risk Assessment to be carried out for buildings such as workplaces and houses in multiple occupation. This duty is imposed on a "Responsible Person" and also on any other persons having control of buildings in compliance with the requirements specified in the regulations. Although regulations only require a qualitative assessment of fire risk, a quantitative assessment is an essential first step for performing cost-benefit analysis of alternative fire strategies to comply with the regulations and selecting the most cost-effective strategy. To facilitate this assessment, various qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative techniques of fire risk assessment, already developed, are critically reviewed in this book and some improvements are suggested. This book is intended to be an expanded version of Part 7: Probabilistic risk assessment, 2003, a Published Document (PD) to British Standard BS 7974: 2001 on the Application of Fire Safety Engineering Principles to the Design of Buildings. Ganapathy Ramachandran and David Charters were co-authors of PD 7974 Part 7. Quantitative Risk Assessment in Fire Safety is essential reading for consultants, academics, fire safety engineers, fire officers, building control officers and students in fire safety engineering. It also provides useful tools for fire protection economists and risk management professionals, including those involved in fire insurance underwriting.

Cancer Free b/c of CANCER FREE...
By Green Drink Diaries
How can you not rate a book with "5 Stars" when the information in it saved your life?

I am greatly summarizing this story to keep this simple, but you can find my full story on my blog, [..]. In 2008, at age 26 I was diagnosed with a rare and indolent form of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, stage II. After biopsy, PET scan, bone marrow biopsy confirmation, and pathology confirmed by 3 different labs, I was referred to an oncologist who told me that the best form of treatment for my illness was R-CHOP chemotherapy followed by radiation. In our hearts, my husband and I knew that the risk of fertility coming with that was not something we could risk so we began to look for other options.

Through several "chance" discoveries, my husband came across Bill's book and ordered it. While he was busy reading other books on alternative and natural cancer approaches, I dove into "Cancer-Free: Your Guide to Gentle, Non Toxic Healing." This by far was the best choice for me to read, being an overwhelmed, emotional, newly diagnosed cancer patient who wanted so desperately to protect my fertility.

He writes in simple terms without leaving out the science that explains the "WHY's" of cancer and alternative cancer therapies. I LOVED how empowered I became as I read what was the cause of cancer and WHY my doctor didn't understand much about alternative protocols. As I read, my doubts were reassured with KNOWLEDGE and CONFIDENCE that I could beat my cancer without chemotherapy. I also became RELIEVED as I read, convinced that Bill was an honest, well-intended person who was writing books to teach and help people and NOT to make money off of desperate cancer patients.

Bill lays out what "he would do if he had cancer" to you in the book, and there are many additional treatments he recommends depending on the severity of your cancer type. I followed his protocol like NOTHING I HAD EVER DONE BEFORE! You have to be extremely strict and almost legalistic about it. Within weeks the remaining tumor in my neck (the first in my armpit was removed for biopsy) was shrinking to the touch. My new oncologist who was supportive of me "trying alternative therapies for no longer than 3 months" was amazed but said that my cancer could "wax and wane" in size so we would still need to monitor my progress carefully.

8 months after starting Bill's protocol, I was declared in clinical remission and there was no physical evidence of tumor bulk. 3 years later I am still cancer free. Oh, and I also delivered a healthy baby girl, something I would not have been able to do yet if I would have gone through chemo AND the #1 reason we wanted to avoid it in the first place.

I want to add that it is not an easy road. You can NEVER go back to the way you ate before. I still eat mostly vegan, mostly raw, mostly organic, eat the Budwig mixture, and still take SOME of the supplements that Bill recommends- 3 years after I started. Although this treatment is overall much cheaper than conventional treatment, nothing is covered by insurance and it is a lifestyle that can be more expensive than the average American, but TOTALLY worth it!

Also- Bill has been so supportive of me when I had short questions. For instance, when I reached my 2 year remission date I wanted to see what supplements I could safely stop taking. I emailed him and he let me know what he thought with what I felt was a realistic and well-informed answer.

I honestly DO NOT think Bill's protocol is for everyone. I DO believe everyone could do it if they wanted to, but it is a test of the WILLS. You have to WANT it bad and (as Bill says) believe you can get well. It is a complete OVERHAUL of everything you thought you knew about cancer, cancer research, and the American healthcare system. Whatever treatment plan you choose for your cancer, please let it be out of informed decision of both alternative (reading Bill's book or others with a similar belief) and the conventional information you receive from your doctor. NEVER make your decision out of fear.

This book is very easy to read and is very informative
By Hugh Hatfield
I am a board Certified Oncologist and have treated cancer patients for more than 35 years. This book is very easy to read and is very informative. I too am convinced that there is many treatments for cancer that are far more effective than surgery, radiation and chemotherapy without any toxicity. This book should be read by any person with a cancer diagnosis, before they submit to, CUTTING, BURNING, and POISONING. Or, they should see a holistic physician with the philosophy outlined in this book before they make a decision about intervention therapy choices.

Helped me tremendously
By PandaCat
First let me comment on the effectiveness of the supplements recommended in this book:
I first found out this book after my late husband was diagnosed of glioblastoma grade IV. After doing extensive research (and having prior knowledge of other alternative cancer therapies such as Gersen Theracy (not effective on brain cancers), The Bill Henderson Protocal and the Budwig Diet were my own hope. I bought all the required supplements and started making the cottage cheese/flaxseed mix for him. However, the discovery of the tumor was too late and we went into hospice (he was both unwilling and unable to swallow large amount of pills required in this therapy). While I was taking care of him, I decided to take these pills myself, knowing that I had been under tremendous stress for a extended period of time couldn't be good for my health at all. While I was taking these supplements, I slept 5 hours a day, lost 17 lbs, spent 10+ hours at the hospital daily, and eventually did full time care taking for another month. In normal condition I would have shed a lot of hair (my weakest point and #1 health warning indicator). While I was taking these supplements during this extremely stressful time, I almost did not lose any hair at all. I started taking the barley powder late - only after my husband passed. In one month my blood ph level went from 5.5 to 6.5 (verified by blood test). I had to say that these supplements were keeping me in one piece.

Now on the educational level of the book in general:
Prior to this incident, I have already read a number of books on alternative cancer treatments. I think this book is very helpful in providing a clear guideline to people who just find out about their cancer diagnosis or who want to prepare themselves ahead of time. There were great discussions about the "cancer industry", the money factor behind the medical business, as well as conscientiously educating the reader to take charge in their own health and dare to ask difficult questions to their doctors. And trust me, I got almost every single textbook answer listed by this book when asking about treatment/diet from the conventional doctors. This book also provides great guidance on how to obtain the supplements.

Knowledge is power. The more you know, the more you think, and the more questions you ask, the less you will fear. Cancer was a very scary thing. Now I'm no longer afraid of it because I know what to do if I'm faced with the same situation, I know how to take my time to research and interview a doctor who respects me for taking charge of my own health, and I have a concrete of food/dietary items that will help me restore my health.

A good introduction to Filipino foods
By N. Huffman
I enjoyed reading this cookbook as it had Filipino foods both familiar(adobo) and unfamiliar. I also found a recipe for frog legs cooked in soy sauce like my father used to enjoy eating when I was a child, so I was excited to write the recipe down!

A journey on the tree of life
By silver elves
first...
dear magi,
... we don't review books that we don't like, or that we feel have no redeeming features. This book, however, is clearly not for the mass of people. It is certainly not for beginners in magic, unless they are that very rare beginner who is just now starting again in this lifetime and remembers well what SHe (she/he) has learned in previous ones. It is also very helpful if one is familiar with the Qabalah and also if one is acquainted with or interested in Gemantia, the number/letter/word correspondences of Judaic language, mysticism and magic. For us the best part of the book, and this is a short book, was in the appendices, where the author explains the relevant aspects of the Qabalah that make his diary understandable, and his bibliography.
You probably have to be a fanatic for magic, as these elves are, and perhaps a lover of magical diaries, which we also are, to like this book, but if you, like these elves, are fascinated by other magician's experiences, you may well find this an interesting addition to your library.
kyela,

Unique Magickal Grimoire
By Wizard Baphomet
Lucifer Diaries is a complex magickal diary, and thus a grimoire, of an obviously accomplished occultist. It is complex because several magickal topics, such as astral travel, the cabala and enochian magick are interweaved throughout the book in a very interesting manner. In addition, one has to almost live with this book and work through it often to begin to really understand it. My only complaint is that it seems almost impossible to find some of the other books the author has written to be able to purchase, in particular Howling at the Sky.Update on my review: I was able to purchase a copy of Howling at the Sky, which the author, Roger Williamson, was a gracious enough to sign. Howling at the Sky is another masterpiece of Occult Knowledge, and was well worth the effort to find it.

Fallen angels, alien intelligence, and how to talk to them
By A Customer
This is one of the few books out there that takes traditional western magickal practices and puts them into to full practice within contemporary terms. A strange and extremely compelling description of the authors contact with alien intelligances and Goetic demons over a stretch of 10years. Extremely psychedelic with a dark spark this is certain to be considered a occult classic. Very thorough and gives details as to the rituals and techniques used to invoke these praeternatural forces. Not for the mentally unstable or pious.
WELCOME THE COMING AGE OF LUCIFER!

great read!
By Brandi
I just started reading this text book for a Nutrition class and I have to say, out of all the text books I have read in my college years this one is turning out to be one of the easiest to read. The content is clear and straight forward. The authors do a great job at giving you simple to understand descriptions and images to clarify any confusing points. They also do a great job at keeping sections from dragging on, and even add in quirky stories to break up the reading (they are pretty cheesy stories, but serve their purpose). The only criticisms I have is that the questions/quizzes at the end of the chapter don't always mirror what you just learned, and others are a bit confusing when you find out what the answer really is. Also, some information should be touched on a bit more in the main text of the book and then in more detail in the boxed off sections, such as equations etc ( I know they already do this, but if i'm going to be asked on how to convert and what not in quizzes, I would like a bit more emphasis that I WILL need to practice this a bit more, if that makes any sense at all?). However, though I am only a few chapters in, based on what I have read I would definitely recommend this book to future nutrition students/classes. It is an enjoyable and informational read!

Good alternative for the book, but no page numbers :(
By I. Okere
This is a great buy if you don't want or can't afford the $100+ new edition of the text. The only qualm I have is there aren't any page numbers, just "locations". I don't even know what that means! So when my teacher asks us to turn to page so and so, I'll have too look off my neighbor that has the physical text, see what the page looks like, then click through to find it myself. I have the Kindle program on my laptop, so it might have page numbers on the actual Kindle device. So other than the page number situation, the books perfect. Just be sure to check with your professor that you can bring your laptop/device to class. Some profs find it rude if you do it without asking.

Hope this helps!
