"It's very tight and cramped in here."
By ViBe
Volume 4 of D-Frag! contains chapters 22 to 28 (7 chapters) and a few extra chapters at the end that are worth reading. If you bought the previous 3 volumes, this 4th volume is pretty identical to make and size of the books by 7S.

Other than that, the first 2 chapters focus on Kazama Kenji, the central protagonist, and Takao, captain of the Real Game Development Club dealing with the events that happened in the last volume and the two going out and buying a video game. The interactions between these two are some of my favorites in the entire series because seeing Takao fumble around Kenji is pretty enjoyable.

Chapter 24 introduces Kazama Noe, Kenji's little sister, getting into complications with the temp Game Dev. Club (Temp). She and Mizukami Sakura of the Game Dev. Club (Temp) (Both Noe and Sakura are the cover girls this volume) end up going at odds with each other in another competition arc that spans the last half of the volume. Sakura teasing Noe and Noe in turn being embarrassed around Kenji because of the teasing is another thing I found to be very enjoyable to read this volume.

Overall I enjoyed this volume, I actually enjoyed it a bit more that the previous 3. Buy this if you enjoyed the previous 3 volumes of D-Frag! by Tomoya Haruno.

Best volume so far
By conditionals
I fell in love with D-Frag via the anime, and the manga does not disappoint at all. The series somehow pulls of constant hilarity and absurdist humour, but never loses track of the characters and narrative (as it is... it kind of tricks you into thinking it has one, which is genius in and of itself).

This volume contains the first real story that wasn't covered in the anime (it's in the OVA). The race for the sacred water at the temple is hilarious, as is the added backstory of Sean Connery-sensei and Takao's mother. Ludicrous.

The rest of the volume includes everybody's favourite moment from the anime - Kenji and Takao's "date". It's all great.

Amazon Exclusive: A Conversation Between Kristin Hannah and Emily Giffin

Emily Giffin (left) is the author of five New York Times bestselling novels, including Something Borrowed, which has been adapted as a major motion picture that will be in theaters in summer 2011. A graduate of Wake Forest University and the University of Virginia School of Law, she lives in Atlanta with her family.

Kristin Hannah (right) is the New York Times bestselling author of eighteen novels, including Winter Garden. She is a former lawyer turned writer and the mother of one son. She and her husband live in the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii.

Kristin Hannah: Well, first, I have to say, Emily, that I am just the tiniest bit irritated with you. When I got the call to do this interview, I was thrilled, to say the least. It came at a really busy time for me--right after the holidays and we all know how crazy that is--and my work in progress was giving me fits. Then I picked up Heart of the Matter, and lost myself. No more writing, no more cooking, no getting my hair done or reading my email. Once I started the story I literally couldn't put it down. Brava, girlfriend, I say. Your characters are so real and compelling, and they always say exactly the right thing. With so much honest emotion, I just have to ask how much of your work comes from your own life?

Emily Giffin: It never fails to thrill me when someone responds to one of my novels--especially when it's another writer. Writers understand the alchemy involved in making up something from nothing. And I just finished your book, Night Road, and I found it so emotional, so moving, and so terrifying--especially since I have three young children who will someday be teenagers. In terms of how much does my work come from my own life, I would say that I'm absolutely inspired by people, places, conversations, relationships, and issues that I observe, and that the "what if" part of my novel is very much inspired by these things in my life. But the details of my plots and the specifics of my characters come from my own head. How about you, Kristin? I'll ask you the million-dollar question that every author gets asked: where do you get your ideas?

Kristin: Ah, the idea question. I don't want to sound coy, but the truth is, I don't quite know. It's the most magical part of the process for me. I'm a pretty analytical gal, and I approach writing in the same just-the-facts-ma'am way I approach most things. I need to find an issue that engages me on an intellectual level, and then I need to marry that curiosity with a kind of passion. I need to feel genuinely passionate about each story before I ever write a word, and I have to actually have something to say. It takes me at least a year to research and write a novel, and so I have to really adore each part of it--the characters, setting, story. Most of all, it has to make me feel something genuine. That's really the most important component. Usually it begins with a single "what if" question--what if you discovered your mother had a whole secret life about which you knew nothing (Winter Garden) or what if your husband were accused of a crime you believed he hadn't committed (True Colors)--and then I write and re-write until the characters seem as real to me as old friends.

Kristin: I'm amazed by how much we have in common. We're both moms, both lawyers, both lived in London for a time. You're like a younger, cooler version of me. How did you make the transition from lawyer to writer, and do you think you'll ever practice law again?

Emily: I would hardly say I'm cooler than you, Kristin! I hear you live in Hawaii part time! What is cooler than that? I made the transition from lawyer to writer because I was so miserable being a lawyer that I needed some escape from the day-to-day of it. And inventing stories was that escape. I can say, without hesitation, that I will never practice law again. Would you? What kind of law did you practice, and for how long? What did you find appealing (or discouraging) about law? Did you find that it gave you fodder for any of your novels?

Kristin: Honestly, I have met very few lawyers who don't say that what they really want to do is write. Like you, I can say with certainty that I will never practice law again. Not that anyone would want me to. But I still keep my Bar membership up...just in case this whole writing thing doesn't work out. And yes, in the past few years, I have finally begun to put some of that law school education to work for me. I find that I'm really enjoying adding legal issues to my work. Of course, I have to talk to real lawyers to make sure I'm getting it right...

From Publishers Weekly
Jennifer Wiltsie's warm, emotionally expressive voice immediately draws listeners into Giffin's story and makes them sympathize with Rachel, whose growing attraction to her best friend's fianc eventually develops into a guilt-ridden affair. Wiltsie handles the other characters deftly; Rachel's best friend, Darcy, is especially vivid (and hilariously shallow and self-centered), and Rachel and Dex's romance is portrayed with exceptional sensitivity. This is definitely one to bring along in the beach bag this summer. A St. Martin's hardcover. (May)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Chick lit is already a crowded genre, but Giffin's compelling debut truly stands out. It is as much about the meaning and value of friendship as it is about love, and it takes some risky chances that pay off. Rachel is celebrating her thirtieth birthday with her friends, including her lifelong best friend, Darcy, and Dex, Rachel's handsome friend from law school and Darcy's fiance. One thing leads to another and Rachel ends up in bed with Dex. Suddenly, all of her repressed feelings for him rush to the forefront, and Dex says he feels the same. But thoughts of Darcy nag at Rachel. Perfect, pretty Darcy has always gotten everything she's wanted, as well as things that Rachel wanted, like her admission to her first-choice college. But Rachel and Dex can't deny their attraction, and Rachel wonders if they might possibly have a real future together. It's a gamble to cast her heroine in a potentially unsympathetic light, but Giffin manages to create empathy for her likable characters without cheapening the complexity of their situation, making for a genuinely winning tale. Blah at its best
By CaspersMommy33
Well ... I purchased and read the book based entirely on the reviews I read here on Amazon. So many people stated they felt a kinship with Rachel and were rooting for her and Dex to end up together, mainly because of Darcy's selfishness and her "the world revolves around me" attitude. So I went into the book expecting to align with those feelings. However, I did not feel the same AT ALL. Rather, here was my take on the main characters. ***** SPOILERS *****

Rachel. So much of the book was spent comparing Rachel's lack of just about everything (looks, personality, charm, boyfriends, friends, clothes, style, etc) to Darcy's superiority in all of the above. To me, it sounded like Rachel was constantly whining throughout that she never did and never would measure up to Darcy. The entire time I was thinking to myself, "why did you keep Darcy as your best friend all these years if you held this deep rooted resentment toward her for things neither of you could control?" Rachel, quite simply, was a debbie downer. There was even a part in the book when Rachel was thinking to herself and wondering if Darcy would go so far as to "pop some pills to make the pain go away" aka suicide .... I mean, really? We're supposed to feel bad for THIS woman? Uh, no. Her insecurities get no compassion from me.

Darcy. Yes, she could be self-centered and materialistic. However, she was never the complete witch I expected her to be made out to be. At least, not until the last couple of chapters of the book, but even then she only did the same thing to Rachel and Dex that they did to her. Sure, she made a few comments throughout that were tasteless. Yes, she was engrossed in her appearance and all things Darcy. But she was also a very good friend to Rachel. I actually liked Darcy throughout the book and admired many of her characteristics.

Dex. He was with Darcy for SEVEN years. After ALL that time he suddenly decides she's not what he wants and instead he wants her lesser attractive, insecure, frumpy best friend that he actually new first from law school? Sorry, I'm not buying it. It just doesn't make sense. At all. Dex strikes me as someone with absolutely no dimension to him at all.

All in all, I felt that Ethan and Rachel had a great vibe and I expected something to develop there, but of course nothing came of that. And on that note, what kind of friend (Rachel) flies to London to visit an old friend (Ethan) and on the second night goes on a date with a stranger (James)? Was I the only person that found that to be incredibly rude?

Sleeping with your friends man. This is entertaining
By Sara K.
I loved this book! I thought it was entertaining and also left me wanting more with every page I turned. It was a little risque considering this is about someone who falls in love with her best friends man.its a book so I don't want to talk too much about the story line and give anything away. After reading this first book I HAD to buy the follow up book. I'm usually more into true crime books but this had enough entertainment and suspense that I wasn't expecting. I truly enjoyed this author and will look for more books to read

Meh.
By Razzy2001
I overall didn't really enjoy this book. The main character was sleeping with her best friend's fianc, that's a complete no-go in my book. I think the only thing that I really enjoyed/appreciated about some of this was while she was at war with herself, not able to stay OR go, analyzing her friendship with Darcy. Most of us, at some time or another, have had a friend that we love but maybe isn't always good for us or a good friend in return. Per than that, this book was kind of a meh for me.

suppressed appetite and I feel so good, energy
By Linda
Talk about sceptics, I rated right at the top of the list and then some. I've tried so many things to curb the appetite. I generally average 1600 to 1800 daily. That's not a lot in some standards. I also exercise. Problem is as you age your metabolism tends to tank. My thyroid decided to also. This system is dynamic. No pills, etc, suppressed appetite and I feel so good, energy, awesome. Thumbs up and thank you Paul McKenna!!!!
Have never added to a comment before. This I feel is important. Have lost 42 lbs in 4 months. I learned how mindlessly I was eating. Now I appreciate what I eat. Sit at the table and enjoy the meal. Those two things alone are changing my life. I listen to the cd when I go to bed and do so on a regular basis as old habits are hard to break. I can honestly say if you do what he says, it does work.

Stealing your money on the Kindle version
By Nichole
I would most likely give this a better rating if I hadn't been cheated out of the money to buy this for my Kindle. What you don't realize with the purchase of this through Kindle is that you don't get the REQUIRED downloads that he speaks about in the book. So consequently, you buy the book and it's useless.

Follow the instructions, read the book first
By Yarii (cat mom)
I don't have a ton of weight to lose, 30 lbs., so I would never qualify for a *real* gastric band, nor would I want one. I'm too chicken for any surgery, so I decided to try this as no matter what I eat I never seem to feel full or satisfied. This 30 lbs. I've been trying to lose the past 10 years with no real success, other than a couple pounds lost, then regained, like yo-yo dieting.

I was eager to start so I popped the CD into my computer when I heard a stern warning to stop the CD and read the book first. It's a quick read as the type is large and the lines are almost double-spaced. Don't jeopardize this not working for you by skipping the book, it's important. For 1-2 weeks before you start the hypnosis sessions, you're supposed to walk 20 minutes a day and eat less high fat/high sugar foods, just as if you were preparing for a *real* gastric band.

I thought a British accent would distract me enough to not become hypnotized, Paul McKenna's voice is soothing and his accent did not keep me from going into a trance.

CD: Has 2 tracks.
Track 1: Pre-operative instructions 13 minutes long. (Which tells you to stop the CD and read the book first!)
Track 2: Gastric band installation trance. 28 minutes long.

DVD: Havening Technique. Under 5 minutes long - a chest-tapping/eye movement procedure to use if you have uncomfortable feelings? This technique is supposed to help raise your serotonin levels since food will no longer be doing that for you. I've been doing this in private (kind of odd) - maybe it takes awhile to see any result other than just feeling dumb when doing it - this may be too New Age for me.

You are supposed to follow McKenna's Golden Rules (I don't have the other book but I've seen the Golden Rules and he goes into detail in THIS book so no need to buy the other if you don't already own it).
1. When you are hungry, eat.
2. Eat what you want, not what you think you should.
3. Eat consciously.
4. When you think you're full, stop eating.

So does this mental gastric band work? I could tell the first time I ate after having it "inserted" that I felt full quicker, and it lasted a long time before I felt hungry again. You can eat most anything you want, but you will want less of it. I don't like typical breakfast food, but occasionally I will stop at McDonald's or Burger King on the drive to work but only eat half my order and save the rest for another day...which I never did before--I ate it all at once and I was going through the drive-up every day Monday-Friday. It's been 2 weeks and I've lost 5 lbs. so far.

Extremely Biased and Narrowly Focused
By AK
I would give this book no stars if I could. I was planning on using this for my son in 7th grade, but after reading several chapters myself I decided not to. The Good: The book is written at seventh grade level and is written in an interesting way. The Bad: My problem is that it does not give enough attention to the important events or people during this time period and goes way to much into less important things. For example, out of 17 chapters in the book, 2 are on Islam. Now, I would agree that Islam should be taught during this time period. I mean we are talking about the Crusades and the spread of Islam. However, teaching kids in detail about the religion seems more like indoctrination than facts about history. One section is titled "Islamic Beliefs and Practices". No other religion is given its own section on its beliefs and practices. In this section it describes jihad as "to make an effort, or to struggle. Jihad refers to an inner struggle people go through in their effort to obey God and behave according to Islamic ways". This definition seems like a watered down version when the Merriam-Webster dictionary has " a holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty" as the main definition. This is a world history text, but Christianity, Confucianism, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. are treated as way less important. Again, this was the Crusades....Don't they think the should be talking more about Christianity? 2 of the 17 chapters are on Africa, 1 on Japan and 1 on China. While it is important to learn about what was happening in Africa during the Middle Ages, do you really need 2 chapters. A lot more was happening in Europe. Europe got 2 chapters, also. As a western civilization the development of the United States was affected much more by Europe than Africa. This book does not give an accurate portrayal of history for this time period.

Excellent review of Midieval history

I bought this to use for home schooling my 8th grader and I found it to be excellent. Each chapter is thorough, accurate and easy to follow. End of the chapter questions are well written. It was fun to go through the very informative book.

Visually engaging
By Amazon Customer L
So much more concise and to the point than other grade 7 Social Studies textbooks I considered (and bought) for homeschooling. I like the impartiality, the straightforward language (not in love with their own writing), and the great graphics. Really a quality textbook. And visually interesting for the reluctant learner. The pages are blocked nicely, with enough white space to make it not feel overwhelming to the student.

Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms: Journeys Into the Disappearing Religions of the Middle East, by Gerard Russell

Despite its reputation for religious intolerance, the Middle East has long sheltered many distinctive and strange faiths: one regards the Greek prophets as incarnations of God, another reveres Lucifer in the form of a peacock, and yet another believes that their followers are reincarnated beings who have existed in various forms for thousands of years. These religions represent the last vestiges of the magnificent civilizations in ancient history: Persia, Babylon, Egypt in the time of the Pharaohs. Their followers have learned how to survive foreign attacks and the perils of assimilation. But today, with the Middle East in turmoil, they face greater challenges than ever before.

In Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms, former diplomat Gerard Russell ventures to the distant, nearly impassable regions where these mysterious religions still cling to survival. He lives alongside the Mandaeans and Ezidis of Iraq, the Zoroastrians of Iran, the Copts of Egypt, and others. He learns their histories, participates in their rituals, and comes to understand the threats to their communities. Historically a tolerant faith, Islam has, since the early 20th century, witnessed the rise of militant, extremist sects. This development, along with the rippling effects of Western invasion, now pose existential threats to these minority faiths. And as more and more of their youth flee to the West in search of greater freedoms and job prospects, these religions face the dire possibility of extinction.

Drawing on his extensive travels and archival research, Russell provides an essential record of the past, present, and perilous future of these remarkable religions.

Review
Wall Street Journal
“It is difficult to imagine a more timely book than Gerard Russell’s Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms: Journeys Into the Disappearing Religions of the Middle East. Equal parts travelogue and history, Mr. Russell’s meticulously researched book takes readers into some of the region’s least-known minority communities: the Mandaeans of Iraq, the Copts of Egypt, the Zoroastrians, the Samaritans, and, yes, the Yazidis.”

New York Review of Books
“[A] remarkable book.... The great virtue of Russell’s book is its courageous spirit of sympathy for an immense range of human experience.... An urgently needed corrective in our age of deepening religious divisions.”

Financial Times
“A fascinating survey of threatened and vanishing minority religions across the broader Middle East, written in an even tone sprinkled with wonder.”

New York Times Book Review By the Book
“[A] highly topical study of Middle Eastern anomalies which is teaching me a lot, and should be read by all Western policy makers — those who do read.”

Literary Review (UK)
“Part vivid odyssey, part lucid history.... Gerard Russell's timely and humane depiction of [these cultures] is a compelling read.”

Bookforum
“A nation-hopping guidebook to the theology and customs of believers who can’t fully inhabit the imaginations of many Western readers without a proper introduction.... Engaging and informative.... Russell introduces a cast of characters who, even when offering cagey responses to his earnest questions, humanize groups that news reports tend to treat as extras on the world stage.”

The National
“Gerard Russell, a former British diplomat who has served throughout the region, is a worthy successor to the great British Arabists of the past, passionately interested in the area and its people.... Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms is informative, thought-provoking and timely. It provides fascinating insights into the mosaic of religious beliefs that can be found throughout the Middle East, and also into how that diversity emerged and survived. Eschewing discussion of modern politics, it presents a challenge, nevertheless, to those who bear the responsibility for how this diversity can be preserved in the years to come. All humanity will be the loser should it disappear.”

Shelf Awareness for Readers
“An important and engaging book for anyone interested in the Middle East.”

Publishers Weekly, starred review
“[A] fascinating account of minority religions in Middle East.... By tying modern practice to historical context, Russell provides a valuable briefing on the ancient and medieval history of the region. He also muses on the immediate future of each community, particularly with respect to political instability and immigration, and his cheerfully personal tone makes all this information lively. This important and enjoyable glimpse into little-considered religious dynamics of the Middle East deserves to be widely read and distributed.”

Booklist
“Russell, a former British and UN diplomat who lived in the Middle East for 15 years, proves an excellent tour guide as he introduces the remnants of these near-extinct groups…a fascinating read, especially when it becomes clear that, with a few twists of history, some of these religions would have been at the top, not the bottom.”

Library Journal
“A fascinating and gracefully written study of minority religions, recommended for its appreciate of cultural richness and variety.”

Kirkus
“Russell penetrates the secret workings of these religions tolerated throughout the ages by Christian or Islamic rulers, even pursuing his research to immigrant churches in Dearborn, Michigan. A pertinent work of history and journalism. As armies again march in the Middle East, these communities are at new risk.”

Ambassador Peter W. Galbraith, author of The End of Iraq
“This beautifully written account of the Middle East’s unknown and vanishing religions could not be more timely. Just as the world turns its attention to the extremist attacks on Iraq’s Yazidis, Gerard Russell tells us who they are. Russell’s book—based on his travels among the Yazidis, Mandaeans (followers of John the Baptist), Zoroastrians, Samaritans, Copts, and Druze—is the story of people and faiths that have links back to the dawn of civilization. It is travel writing in the tradition of Rebecca West and Robert Kaplan, but possibly better.”

Carne Ross, former diplomat and founder of Independent Diplomat
“Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms has the beauty, wisdom, and tragedy of the best elegies. Gerard Russell’s book is both timely and necessary, a scholarly and personal observation of religions that are the heritage of all mankind, yet are rapidly disappearing. It is part travelogue and part history of some of the original wellsprings of human culture, both ancient and modern, but also a meditation upon rites and beliefs that are mysterious and fascinating but grievously threatened. Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms is essential reading for everyone who cares about the Middle East, religion, and indeed our common history.”

Peter Bergen, author of Manhunt: The Ten-Year Search for Bin Laden from 9/11 to Abbottabad
“As the al-Qaeda splinter group, ISIS, storms across Syria and Iraq and attempts to destroy the Yazidi religious sect, now comes Gerard Russell, an erudite, polylingual former British diplomat, who documents the fates of the ancient religions of the Middle East, many of which are on the brink of extinction. Russell writes beautifully and reports deeply, and his account of these ‘disappearing religions’ will be an enduring anthropology of largely-hidden worlds that may disappear within our own lifetimes.”

Ali Asani, Professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic Religion and Cultures, Director, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Islamic Studies Program, Harvard University
“An eloquent and sensitive portrayal of the Middle East's lesser known religions, whose existence is severely threatened by the strident nationalisms and proxy wars that are currently tearing apart a region once renowned for its tolerance. Gerard Russell gives a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves, those whose traditions—handed down through many centuries—are being disregarded and indeed obliterated in a blaze of violence and hatred. He lifts the ‘veil of ignorance’ and reveals just what is at stake—both in the Middle East and around the world. Through extensive and meticulous research, and encompassing years of travel to distant places to meet in person those whose lives have been turned upside down, Mr. Russell's passionate message touches the heart and reminds us of the value and beauty of tolerance.”

Tom Holland, author of In the Shadow of the Sword: The Battle for Global Empire and the End of the Ancient World
“It is unbearably poignant that a book so learned and so beautifully written should have been written about the religious minorities of the Middle East just as many of them seem on the verge of extinction. Rarely have I read anything so timely.”

Emma Sky, Senior Fellow at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs, Yale University
“Gerard Russell's beautifully written book provides wonderful insights into the Middle East and the beauty of the different cultures that have flourished there for centuries. It is a welcome respite from the usual portrayal of violence in the region, and at the same time a wake-up call of what will be lost if a perverse form of violent extremism is allowed to prevail. At a time when religion is so often seen as a cause of war, this book shows how lives can be enriched by maintaining rituals and beliefs through generations.”

James Traub, columnist for foreignpolicy.com
“Gerard Russell has written a wonderfully beguiling Baedaker to the vastness of the Middle East, where ancient religions have survived like the remnants of an all-but-extinct species. At a time when the region is boiling with sectarian violence, Russell reminds us that the Arab world, and Islam itself, has given shelter to ancient faiths when Christian Europe would not. Heirs To Forgotten Kingdoms is a loving tribute to the ancient and the strange, to spliced genealogies, and to the heroic defense of heterodoxy in an increasingly intolerant world.”

Kwasi Kwarteng, Member of Parliament
“Original, instructive, and entertaining, Gerard Russell’s Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms weaves ideas and travel experiences into an excellent narrative. This is a brilliant book.”

Ambassador Akbar Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University in Washington, DC and the former Pakistani High Commissioner to the UK
“Oxford and Harvard, fluency in Arabic and Farsi, postings with the British Foreign Service in the Middle East and Afghanistan—as a scholar-diplomat Gerard Russell seems almost too good to be true. He brings these gifts to his beautifully written account of some of the most fascinating and little known communities facing the challenges of globalization. Read it to understand the complexity of—and hope in—our world.”

Parag Khanna, author of The Second World: Empires and Influence in the New Global Order
“At a time when minorities—and even majorities—are being persecuted across the Middle East, ancient faiths continue, just barely, to survive. Gerard Russell not only recalls a more tolerant past through his sketches of now exotic tribes and rituals, but also paints a deep and complex relief to help us understand this troubled region’s evolution. Russell is a true classical diplomat: explorer, linguist, scholar—and master storyteller.”

So who are the Yazidis and why should I care?
By Robert Johnston
...that was a question I wondered about. We don't get much background from media who told us ISIL had slaughtered them, hounded them, and then finally corralled them up an obscure mountain called Sinjar to end them. Who are these peculiar people of such primitive, ancient and 'backwoods' roots?

The 21st century veil of obscurity is raised here by Russell. Here you can discover the Yazidis and Harranians, the Mandaeans, Zoroastrian's and Bhai, Druze, the Samaritans, the Copts and Kalasha in an extraordinarily well framed witness to "Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms". Russell takes the reader into the lethal peculiarities of these accursed living lines. We can see them through Russell's expert eye as they fade from existence in the harshest ways. This is the story of ancient 'heretics', followers of a lesser god and pagans living in the deepest tribal isolation under the unrelenting pressure of genocide in today's Islamic wars. Russell explores the ancient nuances revealed in the Islamic Sunni vs Shiite real estate grab of today. I was blind to the implications of Islamic 'justice', finally consummated according to medieval fatwas befalling these living heretics and pagans. Here is the story of 8th century justice at last rendered on the living.

What struck me most in the fascinating read is the magnitude of the catastrophe. It must be historically unique to the 21st century. How can it be that these tightly knit and ancient enclaves are being lost forever with barely a peep from the mightier powers that might preserve them? Are they just not worth it?

This book pulls hard at humanitarian concepts and pulls hardest at the reader's heartstrings ... the 'Last of the Mohicans' is the feeling. It seems this story can't possibly be true but a quick search attests to veracity. What an unmitigated human disaster Russell has profiled. It sticks to me. Russell explores the planets most endangered species, these humans of a lesser god and of the bloody stain on nations that could make it otherwise. It's the story of witness that I've not seen in my lifetime.

The story is incomplete in some ways. The extreme persecutions of the few remaining Jews in Muslim lands are under no less jeopardy ... 10 Jews left in Cairo? This is not a criticism of what the book covers so well. It's simply the fact that there is more to the story. The epilogue as Russell follows the remnants of these communities to exile in America and elsewhere is an uneasy story to conclude upon. Happy they are to be alive, but broken. How will the story continue?

This is a 5-star, well written, must read ... for the interested. I found myself embarrassed for 21st century evolved notions of`humanity'. I was humbled.

A related but more ancient telling of similar calamity caught my attention a while back. If you choose to read this book, you might also enjoy The Lost History of Christianity: The Thousand-Year Golden Age of the Church in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia--and How It Died

Three reasons I loved this book
By Michael Webb
Most reviews of this book focus on its timeliness in the face of ISIS (let alone Modernity). This is no doubt a good reason to read it. But here are some other reasons:

1. What insight into humanity's imagination!

Every other page I exclaimed in delight at some marvelous story or ritual that Russell has uncovered - either in an ancient text he has found in some dusty archive, or by direct observation of its practice today. Consider the characters of Mandaean mythology. There is Krun, the flesh mountain, who according to Russell "sounds a bit like Jabba the Hutt"; the dragon Ur, who sits above an ocean of flammable oil, and, Russell's professed favorite, the demon Dinanukht, "who is half man and half book and 'sits by the waters between the worlds, reading himself.'"

Or consider the Kalasha, whose rule-makers seem to have had a touch of OCD: "The right hand, the male sex, the high mountains, purity, odd numbers, and life all were affiliated with each other; to these were opposed the left hand, the female sex, the low valleys, impurity, even numbers, and death. So the men sat on the right-hand side of their houses and the women on the left. Likewise, it was men who herded the goats and women who planted crops, men who went into the mountains and women whose place was in the valleys, and women who were prone to all kinds of impurity." Russell then tells how "I was scolded for touching a village house as I passed it, since even this made it impure, and meant more juniper branches would need to be burned to restore its pristine state."

2. You'll learn a lot

The author wears his learning lightly, yet it bursts through on every page. What I appreciated especially was the enormous range of his references. For example, a modern Mandaean tells Russell that "I am sure there was a time when Mandaean women could be priests, not just men." Russell not only is able to confirm the particular fact about Mandaeanism: "She was right: in the Drasa da Yehia [a Mandaean holy book], a Jewish woman converts to Mandaeanism and becomes a priest." But he also mentions in passing: "Similarly, in ancient Babylon women could serve as priests. For that matter, women occasionally achieved secular positions of power in the ancient Middle East. The ancient Persian navy had a female admiral - Artemisia, back in the fifth century BC - and in the third century AD Palmyra had a powerful queen, Zenobia."

He also gives fascinating philosophical and historical context for many of his observations. For example, while describing asceticism, he speculates about the philosophical source of the self-denial: "Society was technologically advanced... Yet cesspits had to be cleaned out by hand, diseases such as typhoid were common, and wounds might easily develop gangrene. The body's weakness and foulness were in strange contrast to the intellect's amazing achievements. Since at this time it was not generally understood that the intellect had any connection with the brain (Galen realized that it did, but Aristotle had thought the brain existed just to release heat from the body), it was easy to suppose that the mind, or soul, could survive without the messiness of the body." What a striking thought - and how simply, and gracefully, argued.

3. Last chance to see?

Apart from at the very end, Russell does not say much about what *he* thinks about these religions and what's happening to them: he is the dispassionate academic observer, if one with unusual skill, intrepidity, and verve. He allows his subjects to speak for themselves. But when they do, it is often with considerable passion, beauty, and insight. Consider George, a Palestinian living in a Jewish neighborhood in Detroit. "Coming here [America] was the worst decision I ever made," he tells Russell. "I thought it would be like a salad, every ingredient taking on flavor from the other. It's more like a blender - everything ends up gray."

And this is one reason these religions may not be here for much longer, to say nothing of their more violent and deliberate destruction in recent years and months. The modern world must bear a debt of gratitude to Russell for writing this book: the product of a lifetime of learning, and years of travel in the most dangerous places on earth. That his documentation of these ancient religions has yielded something of enduring beauty - and that is, dare I say it, a page-turner - is remarkable. I urge you to buy it.

Great content, lousy physical book (hardcover)
By Amazon Customer
Splendid content, dreadful physical book. This is a truly wonderful book. Kind, insightful, personally researched. I can't say enough about the content. On the other hand, the book itself is printed on cheap paper and the illustrations can only be called shameful. I have the Kindle version and the illustrations are in color and very clear. The edition I received, to give as a gift, have washed out sepia or b/w photo that were nearly worthless. It is a shame that book published has descended to this level. What ever happened to "printed on acid-free paper?"
