Examples showing up the book's age

Fundamentally I guess negotiations dont change, Time, Information, Power - the subject he talks about are still relevant. Most of the examples seem dated though, Carter and Nixon are talked about a lot, along with Soviet style negotiation.

More importantly today's consumers have a wealth of information on the internet so his example of people buying a fridge spending a lot of time researching prices at other shops seems a bit obsolete.

Finally I don't like a lot of his attitude. He's surprised that people check out on time - "just because some little sign says so". He suggests spending multiple hours and visits with a salesman so that he's invested and you can wrangle a few more bucks off the price. really?

So its worth a quick read if you can pick it up second hand for next to nothing. Its not worth the $7 I paid.

On the fist of the three CDs, Herb covers how Power and Time can affect a negotiation. And how to use these tools to affect other people's behavior during a negotiation.

Listed below is a summarization of the first 8 "Power" perspectives that Herb outlines in his audio book. I only provide brief descriptions.

1. The "power" of Competition - Creating competition for what you have (money, something you are selling, or even an idea) and what you have goes up in value. Don't devalue what you have by telling the other party that no one else is interested in it. Emphasize how others are interested in what you have.
2. The "power" of Options - Always have options before entering a negotiation. By researching and obtaining many or even a few options, you will be more confident during your negotiation. The other side will sense this and will probably become more flexible.
3. The "power" of Legitimacy - The power of written words. Most people have a perception that what is written in books or signs are to be taken as fact. Promote written words (show car dealers adds of a cheaper deal on the same car, etc...) with the understand that written words can be challenged. And you should also challenge written words when it serves you.
4. The "power" of Risk Taking - Take calculated risks. If you don't, the other side might and will have an advantage. (not much else to say there).
5. The "power" of Commitment - Getting others to take a piece of the action. When you have a partner or more in your endeavor, there are now more people share in the stress (thus yours goes down) and in the negotiation process.
6. The "power" of Expertise - Establish your credentials up front as an expert in a particular area (and if you are not an expert in the particular area, gather as much knowledge as you can before the negotiation) and your opinions may not even be challenged.
7. The "power" of Knowledge of Needs - Understanding what the other side's needs really are. What the other says they need to make the deal is not necessarily the minimum of what they Really need.
8. The "power" of Investment - Getting the other side to invest lots of time and effort before discussing what really matters to you, (ie. price or interest rate, etc...) Save it until the end of the negotiation if possible. This has the other side extending more of a commitment of time to you and if the deal fall through, they have to start all over again.

There are a few things about this audio book that I did not like:

Most of the tactics Herb discusses are to be used when negotiating with an adversary (car salesman, Boss, etc...) Trying these tactics with someone you are closer with (wife, husband, friends, relatives, etc) will cause rifts and could deteriorate your relationship with that person.

Herb often confuses the point of affecting peoples behavior and controlling them. The issue that I take with this is that if you go into the negotiation with the intention of controlling another, you could find yourself coming up short on results and gaining much frustration, especially if the other side perceives that you are being manipulative and dishonest.

Overall, its a good audio book. I suggest keeping a critical but open mind when listening so you can get the good stuff and filter out any negatives you may find.

As the title indicates, this book is about negotiation, which the author defines as: "What is negotiation? It is the use of information and power to affect behavior within a "web of tension." If you think about this broad definition, you'll realize that you do, in fact, negotiate all the time both on your job and in your personal life." Herb then summarizes the three pillars of negotiation, the main premise of the book: "In every negotiation in which you're involved--in every negotiation in which I'm involved--in fact, in every negotiation in the world (from a diplomatic geopolitical negotiation to the purchase of a home)--three crucial elements are always present: 1. Information. The other side seems to know more about you and your needs than you know about them and their needs. 2. Time. The other side doesn't seem to be under the same kind of organizational pressure, tune constraints, and restrictive deadlines you feel you're under. 3. Power. The other side always seems to have more power and authority than you think you have."

Below are key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:

1- "Within reason, you can get whatever you want if you're aware of our options, if you test your assumptions, if you take shrewdly calculated risks based on solid information, and if you believe you have power. "

2- "You have more power sources at your fingertips than you realize! 1. The power of competition...2. The power of legitimacy. Legitimacy can be questioned and challenged. Use the power of legitimacy when it's advantageous for you to do so and challenge that power when ifs advantageous for you to do so...3. The power of risk taking You must be willing to take risks while negotiating. Risk taking involves mixing courage with common sense...4. The power of commitment...By syndicating your risk you put yourself in a position to exploit the favorable opportunity because the risk is only moderate for you...5. The power of expertise...Establish your background and credentials early in he confrontation. If you do, your statements may not even t challenged. In other words, cash in on the fact that in complicated negotiations, participants often lack specialized knowledge of certain aspects of the matter being discussed...6. The power of the knowledge of "needs" for: for: 1. The specific issues and demands, which are stated openly. 2. The real needs of the other side, which are rarely verbalized...7. The power of investment...My point is this: If you have something difficult to negotiate--an emotional issue, or a concrete item that can be stated numerically, such as price, cost, interest rate, or salary-cope with it at the end of a negotiation, after the other side has made a hefty expenditure of energy and a substantial time investment...8. The power of rewarding or punishing...If I'm aware of your perceptions and needs, and if I know you think I have power over you, I can control your behavior...9. The power of identification...You will maximize your negotiating ability if you get others to identify with you...10. The power of morality...11. The power of precedent...12. The power of persistence...Persistence is to power what carbon is to steel. By gnawing through a dike long enough even a rat can drown a nation. Most people aren't persistent enough when negotiating...13. The power of persuasive capacity...even if you present me with overwhelming evidence that I understand, should the conclusion depress me, I will remain unconvinced. Your facts and logic may be unassailable, but their acceptance will not meet my existing needs and desires...14. The power of attitude...Try to regard all encounters and situations, including your job, as a game, as the world of illusion. Pull back a little and enjoy it all."

3- "1. Since most concession behavior and settlements will occur at or even beyond the deadline, be patient. True strength often calls for the ability to sustain the tension without flight or fight. Learn to keep your automatic defense responses under control. Remain calm but keep alert for the favorable moment to act. As a general rule, patience pays. It may be that the thing 5 do, when you do not know what to do, is to do nothing. 2. In an adversary negotiation your best strategy is not to reveal your real deadline to the other side. Always keep in mind that since deadlines are the product of a negotiation they are more flexible than most people realize. the benefits and detriments that will ensue as you approach, or go beyond, the brink.3. The "other side," cool and serene as they may appear. always have a deadline. Most often, the tranquility they display outwardly masks a great deal of stress and pressure. 4. Precipitous action should be taken only when ifs guaranteed to be to your advantage. Generally speaking you cannot achieve the best outcome quickly; you can achieve it only slowly and perseveringly. Very often as you approach the deadline a shift of power will occur, presenting a creative solution or even a turnaround by the other side. The people may not change, but with the passage of tune, circumstances do."

4- "Watch the increments of concession behavior, since they send a strong message about the real limits of authority."

5- "A negotiation is more than an exchange of material obj� It is a way of acting and behaving that can develop understanding, belief, acceptance, respect, and trust. It is the manner of your approach, the tone of your voice, the attitude you convey, the methods you use, and the concern you exhibit for the other side's feelings and needs. All these things comprise the process of negotiation. Hence, the way you go about trying to obtain your objective may in and of itself meet some of the other party's needs."

6- "Let me now elaborate on how the negotiating process and reconciling opponent's needs can be used to bring about collaborative Win-Wm outcomes: I. Using the process to meet needs 2. Harmonizing or reconciling needs...In general, the reason we are at odds on an issue may stem from three areas of difference: 1. Experience 2. Information 3. Role...3. Role...Successful collaborative negotiation lies in finding out what the other side really wants and showing them a way to get it, while you get what you want."

7- "Accomplishing mutual satisfaction using the collaborative Win-Win style involves emphasis on three important activities: 1. Building trust 2. Gaining commitment 3. Managing opposition."

8- "How can you ensure that you do not make visceral opponents? My two rules are stated in terse negative terms: 1. Never forget the power of your attitude 2. Never judge the actions and motives of others."

9- "Much like a great chess master, a winning negotiator needs to know every possible strategy from the opening gambit to the end-game play. Then he can enter the event with confidence that he is prepared for every possible eventuality that might occur. Nonetheless, he strives for the best outcome that can give everyone what he wants. And he knows that compromise may be acceptable, but it's not mutually satisfying. It is a back-up, a concluding strategy that he may ultimately have to use to avoid the consequence of a deadlock."

10- "Characteristics of Phone Negotiations: 1. More misunderstanding 2. Easier to say no 3. Much quicker 4. More competitive 5. Greater risk 6. Advantage--caller...The following are some suggestions that can be effortlessly customized to help you achieve success: 1. Be the caller/ not the callee 2. Plan and prepare 3. A graceful exit 4. Discipline yourself to listen 5. Write the memorandum of agreement."

Patience Rewarded

Albert Payson Terhune, the famed dog writer of the 1920s and 1930s who authored the Lassie books, often told this story about his friend Wilson to illustrate the deep love that people and dogs share. It also shows how sometimes what seems to be in the best interest of all concerned may not apply when one of those concerned is a dog.

Wilson’s dog, Jack, was an energetic, six-year-old collie that would meet him every day at the trolley station when Wilson returned from work. This was a ritual that had begun when Jack was a pup. The dog knew the route to and from the station like the back of his paw—and following that route was the highlight of his day. So when Wilson changed jobs and had to move to California, he thought it best to leave Jack on his home turf in Philadelphia with a relative. He explained all this to the dog upon leaving and told him that they both would have to adjust to new homes.

But Jack didn’t want a new home. He would not stay with the family he’d been left with. He returned to Wilson’s old house, even though it was boarded up, and there he passed his solitary days beside an abandoned chair beneath the portico. But every evening, tail wagging, he trotted off to the trolley station. For as long as Jack had been in the world, Wilson had always taken the same trolley home from work, and Jack had been there to greet him. But evening after evening, there was no sign of the devoted dog’s master. Confused and sad, he would return alone to the deserted house.

The dog’s depression grew. He refused the food left for him, and as the days passed, he became thinner and thinner, his ribs noticeable even through his thick blond coat. But every evening, ever hopeful, he’d go to the station to meet the trolley. And every evening, he’d return to the porch more despondent than before.

No one knows why Jack’s new family didn’t contact Wilson, but Jack’s deteriorating condition did not go unnoticed. A friend who lived nearby was so upset by it that he took it upon himself to send a telegram to Wilson in California, informing him of the dog’s situation. That was all it took.

Wilson bought a return train ticket immediately; he knew what he had to do. Upon arriving in Philadelphia, he waited several hours just so that he could take the same trolley that he always did when coming home. When it arrived at the station, sure enough, there was Jack, waiting and watching as the passengers got off. Looking and hoping. And then suddenly there he was, his beloved owner. His master had returned at last! Jack’s world was whole once more—and so was Wilson’s. Wilson later told Terhune, “Jack was sobbing almost like a child might sob. He was shivering all over as if he had a chill. And I? Well, I blew my nose and did a lot of fast winking.”

Wilson took his devoted dog, Jack, back to California with him. They were never separated again.

Wonderfully Told Stories

Part of the continuing success in the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series is the ability of the editors to reap the fertile field of talented, young writers. Debbie Roppolo's "Some Snowballs Don't Melt" is a beautifully told story about the bond between a working man and his working dog. Sad, yet uplifting, the story demonstrates how the relationship between man and animal can transcend mortality. Ms. Ropollo brings the tale of her father and his German Shepherd to life with intimate and exquisite details. One can easily see stories like this being transformed into family movies, the type not often seen in this day and age.

You MUST get this book for all dog lovers.

I bought this book based on the reviews and everyone was so right! It's a very moving book and has humor and compassion. It has all the elements of a Soup Lovers Book. This book has touched my soul and im still in the first section about love. I would have never thought that a dog could teach us so much but this book proves just that.

The first story had me in tears when the owner left the state and left his dog with his relative. The dog became sick and near death because he missed his owner and as soon as they told him he was losing weight and was dying the owner came BACK and the dog was waiting on him in there usual spot at the train station. There is so much more to that story I won't spoil it. That story and the first 5 that I read so far has touched my life in more ways then one.

If you love dogs, have a dog, don't have one or is getting one? Then I reccomend this book for you, I would give it 10 stars if I could. We are getting our new Shih Tzu puppy next month in Dec and I cannot wait to get him. This book proves that love comes in all forms sizes and shapes!

Wonderful collection of heartfelt stories

These stories can easliy be re-read and re-read offering hours of inspiration and warmth. Dog lovers, animal behavior experts, dog trainers, vets and just plain folks share their stories of love, rescue, death and love - this is wonderful for nightly reading, book club reading and daily inspiration.

Adventurer and world traveler, Anton Swanepoel, hales originally from Pretoria, South Africa, but has called a number of exotic locations home. Educated as a software engineer, he worked for a large multinational company before deciding to travel the globe. Along life's journey, Anton became a skilled scuba diver and technical diving instructor, teaching for seven years while living in the Cayman Islands. His resume touts Tri-Mix instructor levels from multiple licensing agencies, and dive records over 400 feet.

Mr. Swanepoel has always loved travel and writing. In the past several years he's combined these passions, authoring and publishing a host of books, sharing secrets he's learned along the way. When he's not exploring an underwater landscape or racing a motorcycle down a stretch of highway, you'll find Anton visiting world destinations and chronicling his experiences.

Today, he is a full-time globetrotter and writer, having penned instructional guides for diving and travel, as well as a pair of fictional novels. His excursion titles are geared toward do-it-yourself travelers, who enjoy saving money and seeing the out-of-way places. His favorite destinations include, Machu Picchu, the mountains of Vietnam, and the Temples at Angkor Wat.

A Highly Informative Travel Guide that includes Beautiful Photographs of the Mentioned Sites

I've recently began researching information on the Angkor Wat Temples as I plan to visit the area this coming summer. I ran across Anton's book by accident, but I'm highly grateful for that bit of fate! Anton's travel guide is exactly what I was looking for as I only plan to spend 3 days visiting and exploring these temples and ruins. He perfectly described each location of interest, and his guide was crucial for me as his useful GPS coordinates helped me map out my own personalized tour. With the information he provided and his beautiful photos, I know exactly what sites I want to visit, how to navigate them on my own, and even save money that I would have had to spend on a guide. I highly recommend Anton's travel guide for anyone looking to spend a restricted amount of time in the area and anyone who wishes to see as much of the beautiful temples and ruins that they can.

A Splendid Virtual Visit

I’ve just spent the past couple of hours visiting dozens of ancient Cambodian temples with the help of Mr. Swanepoel. This is the second of his books that I’ve purchased and been equally impressed with each. Not having the temperament to be a world traveler has not lessened my interest in historical sites, and so a book like this takes me away to places I will likely never touch, but can experience through the authors lens.

The descriptions are succinct, with enough information to begin planning a trip, but the pictures and explanations were the draw for me. The photos are crisp, well placed and varied. I enjoyed them the first time through but will visit each page again in the near future. I would recommend this eBook for anyone thinking of visiting Cambodia or for those of us who can live vicariously through the adventures of others. I had fun with this book.

About the Author

Dr. sc. nat. Christoph Meinel (1954) is President and CEO of the Hasso-Plattner-Institut for IT-Systems Engineering (HPI) and full professor (C4) for computer science at the University of Potsdam. His research field is Internet and Web Technologies and Systems. Beside he is a teacher at the HPI School of Design Thinking, a visiting professor at the Computer Science School of the Technical University of Beijing (China) and a research fellow of the interdisciplinary center SnT at the University of Luxembourg. Since 2008 he is program director of the HPI–Stanford Design Thinking Research Program. He is author or co-author of 10 text books and monographs and has published more than 350 per-reviewed scientific papers in highly recognised international scientific journals and conferences.

Harald Sack is Senior Researcher at the Hasso Plattner-Institute for IT-Systems Engineering (HPI) at the University of Potsdam. After graduating in computer science at the University of the Federal Forces�Munich Campus in 1990, he worked as systems/network engineer and project manager in the signal intelligence corps of the German federal forces from 1990–1997. In 1997 he became an associated�member of the graduate program ‘mathematical optimization’ at the University of Trier and graduated with a PhD thesis on formal verification in 2002. From 2002–2008 he did research and teaching as a�postdoc at the Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena and since 2007 he has a visiting position at the HPI, where he now is head of the research group 'semantic technologies'. His areas of research include�multimedia retrieval, semantic web technologies, knowledge representations, machine learning and semantic enabled retrieval. Since 2008 he also serves as general secretary of the German IPv6�council.

Oh how I love Rick Lax's books...this one is just the latest in a series of well-written, smart, humorous, and just flat-out cool books. I am somewhat (see: extremely) obsessed with Vegas, so of course I went bananas when I read this book--it just has so many random fun facts/stories about Vegas--things you would probably never know otherwise. You will feel as though you are right there with him as he travels through the world of Vegas attempting(or not) to make sense of it all. There are also a ton of great color pictures to go along with the stories. When I can't travel to Vegas, I pick up a Rick Lax book b/c it's the next best thing.

Coconut oil is a must have

I love coconut oil, its so useful. From diaper rashes to nipple cream for breastfeeding I use it on all most everything. This book is filled with recipes for you to add coconut oil to your diet. Its believed that coconut oil will help out your immune system, make your hair healthier, and your skin. (And people claim it helps them lose weight!) Whether you want to do cook everything with it or replace butter in your favorite recipes this book is filled with great ideas.

when i used to try searching for coconut oil recepies , i used to get limited items described or which can be tried with coconut oil.. like snacks .. but when i got this book.. i happen to learn lot many recipes made from coconut oil.. starts with soup recipes,breakfast recipes and salad recipes, lunch recipes , side dishes and deserts .. its complete package ..
