This is a rating from my 9 year old son that has completed the Harry Potter Series and the Lightening Thief Series....

He picked this one up and the library and was done in 3 days! He absolutely loved it!

"It was very adventurous and cool." Now he wants to read the other books by this author...since book #2 isn't out, he is planning on starting her other series. Great for my little reader at home!

Can't wait for the other prequels!

I love the Children of the Red King Series, so finding out the back story is fascinating. I'm a high school English teacher, and I also loved the Harry Potter books, but these are definitely original and NOT a spin off or copy cat. I think they're for young readers, like 4th grade, but I thoroughly enjoy them anyway.

Operation Paperclip

Annie Jacobsen is a journalist who wrote “Area 51”. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and sons. Her research into Area 51 (a Top Secret Military Base) led to this book (‘Acknowledgments’). This 2014 book has 575 pages for its 23 chapters, a list of ‘Principal Characters’, ‘Notes’, and ‘Bibliography’. My first impression was that it seemed too long, but once you start reading you’ll be drawn into its story. One fact is that most people only learned about the Nazi extermination program at the end of the war. Was there a reason for keeping this secret? “Operation Paperclip” began in May 1945 to rescue Nazi scientists with knowledge of rockets, chemical and biological weapons, aviation and space medicine, and other areas (‘Prologue’).

The end result was ballistic missiles, poison nerve gas, underground bunkers, and biological warfare. Note the lack of research into atomic fission. Do any of these weapons have any practical use except as a counter-threat? [The open-air atomic bomb tests resulted in an epidemic of thyroid cancer, as predicted in the 1960s.] Nazi physicians did medical experiments on healthy humans without their informed consent, a violation of laws and medical ethics since the time of Hippocrates (Chapter 1). The Vengeance weapons were designed to destroy civilians. The Nazi regime exterminated millions of people for political ideals and to profit from forced labor. They were like robbers and killers who stole people’s property and lives. The chapters in this book provide many examples. The Nazis used terror and fear to control the people they ruled (no informed consent).

There are too many details to summarize on a single page. You will learn about historical facts that were censored at the time. Space exploration was promoted as something good for the people when it was just a way to squander tax money to benefit big corporations. They sent a man to the moon and brought him back alive. Aside from the publicity, what good did it do the USA or the world? The fact that it was never repeated tells of its worth. There are always competing missions and changing priorities. What about rockets to deliver atomic bombs on targeted cities? The result would cause a Nuclear Winter and radioactive fallout that would kill many. The clouds of dust would blot out the sun and kill crops to cause cold and famine. “War isn’t healthy for children and other living things.” War goes on because it is over loot that returns a profit.

Here is where the G. W. Bush administration’s total disregard for the Geneva Accords and the judgements at Nuremberg all began. If Simon Wiesenthal and the other NAZI hunters had a time machine, this is the book they would have brought back from the future.

About the Author
Eric Flamholtz is Professor of Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior in the Anderson Graduate School of Management and a faculty research fellow in the Harold and Pauline Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is also President of Management Systems Consulting Corporation, which he co-founded in 1978.

Yvonne Randle is Vice President of Management Systems Consulting Corporation. She has extensive consulting experience with companies ranging in size from small entrepreneurships to multi-billion dollar enterprises and is a lecturer on executive education programs in the Anderson School of Management, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

I can't stop laughing about this book, and I set it down half an hour ago. It's a scream!
For example, when the section on arranging an introduction (with an unattached young lady) opens with "Procure a few feet of stout manila rope or clotheseline..." you know this isn't Emily Post...
I'm still laughing just recalling it. It's worth it simply for the meanings of flowers in courtship.
I'll never sleep tonight; my wife will be quite distressed, and I'll be on the couch. That's OK, I'll keep reading this foolish book, Goid knows I need a laugh.

Cory Lebson has been a UX consultant for over two decades. He is the Principal and Owner of a small UX consultancy, a builder of UX community, and a past president of the User Experience Professionals Association (UXPA). Loved this book

Loved this book. If you are new to UX, Cory gives you a lot of insight into real world opportunities and how to prepare for them. If you are more of a veteran there is great info on hiring and retaining a team. I'm recommending it to all my new hires and UX colleges. I loved the personal insight sections from other UX professionals. Highly Recommend! I'd love to see a follow up that focuses on UX Strategy and Management in large corporations.

New to UX or hiring UX pros? An excellent and much needed resource

For those new to UX (User Experience) Design or Research, or those considering it as a career, this is an excellent and much needed resource. (Hint: gift idea.) The entire book provides extremely helpful insights and advice for those new to the field, but also has content for those looking to work with UX professionals. Everything is covered: finding educational resources, how to approach portfolios and resumes, networking advice for introverts, deciding whether to work in-house or as a consultant, contractor, or freelancer. Throughout there are sidebars with UX professionals who provide additional insights on the topic at hand.

The book is broken into four main sections. The first two, “Establishing Your Foundation” and “Getting a Job” are fairly self-explanatory (though “Getting a Job” also provides advice on how to determine the right job for you); the third, “Recruiters & Employers,” provides advice both for those breaking into UX and for recruiters and employers seeking UX professionals; the fourth, “Career Glimpses” is a collection of chapters by UX professionals working in different specializations and companies. I particularly enjoyed reading about the variety of careers people pursue in UX and the many pathways they took to get there.

Perhaps the most important aspect of The UX Careers Handbook is its unflagging encouragement. It demystifies UX, UX careers, and how to get started in the field without ever being condescending or pollyanna-ish. It’s like getting advice from friends.

As a marketing executive, I worked closely with UX professionals and found them to be some of the most intelligent, creative, and interesting people I encountered. So much so that I decided to switch careers. The UX Careers Handbook has been a valuable resource in that process. I absolutely recommend it.
