My wife and I read this book together in a day of travel. It gets into the head of a medical student and gives an idea of what it must be like to be one. The book is refreshing and clever. It appeals to the humanity within all of us and reminds us of our mortality from a new perspective. It had us continuously laughing one moment and crying the next. Painstakingly Detailed, Clear and Comprehensive

This is a detailed social history of the USA and Canada how the two countries are related by people and custom. There are many, many examples provided throughout the book of the countries customs, backgrounds, and religions. Beginning at the settlement of the colonies in the New World and proceeding to modern times this is detailed history. If you are a history buff you will enjoy reading this; if you were hoping for an brief, anecdotal history of the likes and differences between the USA and Canada explaining the causative factors you be overwhelmed.

I am 2/3s thru the book and it has not disappointed. It is historically definitive and comes back again and again to the underlying conceptions and misconceptions that have characterized the relations between the two countries. It is a book worthy of the title and subject and what drew me to buy the book in the first place. As a citizen of both countries I have observed over half a century of the complex themes that professor Bothwell points out and I think he has it just about right.

These books contained his memories of the famous rhetorical teachers and practitioners of his day: their lines of argument, their methods of approach, their idiosyncrasies, and above all their epigrams. The extracts from the declaimers, though scrappy, throw invaluable light on the influences that coloured the styles of most pagan (and many Christian) writers of the Empire. Unity is provided by Seneca's own contribution, the lively prefaces, engaging anecdote about speakers, writers and politicians, and brisk criticism of declamatory excess.
